The Celtic oxygen

604

In a month full of events which resonate with the spirit which inspired those who formed Celtic Football Club, last night’s Wee Oscar 4 Life race night at the Kerrydale Suite was as special as it gets.  Those who were there know they gathered as a community to help the family of Oscar Knox do whatever they can to help the four-year-old through his illnesses.

If you were there, you were magnificent.  Those who decided they would give their time and resources to organise the event are an inspiration to us all.  It was great to hear Bobby Petta talk about the Celtic support in glowing terms.  He has been back in Glasgow for a couple of years and is very much at home in Celtic.  Treble-winning-captain-Tom-Boyd and Frank McAvennie didn’t need to learn about the Celtic support, they were born into it.  Both were there to help and ensure the night was a success.

Performances of the night came from Oscar’s dad, Stephen, Kris Commons’ partner, Lisa and our very own Minx, who sounded like she had presented Children In Need for the last 20 years.  Lisa, who is heavily pregnant, inspired the room with an uncommon touch of humanity.

By late in the evening the total raised was over £25k.  Another simply stunning day in Paradise.

I’ve been offline for most of the last couple of days but have picked up on some of the issues surrounding the Green Brigade.  What I haven’t missed is a single minute of action at Celtic Park this season but I’ve not seen a single incident of crowd trouble or alarm.  This season our games could be ‘policed’ by stewards alone, so it is beyond curious as to why police have any interest in Celtic supporters at all.

Football operations the like of which have been reported are not the actions of officers on the ground, they are a political dictate from very high up the food chain.  There is neither justification nor plausible motivation for using our tax money in this way.

We are a broad church. May all opinions be heard, even if some don’t wish to acknowledge diversity.

I despair at the negativity towards ourselves on here at times.

Being part of Celtic, is and always should be, a thing of joy.

    Fine post.

I would add though, the board are complicit through inaction of protecting the support while in the stadium. However the police have an agenda with the GB. They made that clear a year ago when they said privately they wanted to Smash them. This is the result.

Secondly, the Govan CSC statement is ridiculous, Strathclyde’s finet must be pissing themselves, unsure what could possibly be gained by releasing that statement today.

  3. What about a reality tv documentary following The Green Brigade?

We have guys driving trucks, folk catching fish, tatoo parlours, chefs, soldiers, business execs, drug addicts, and lovies eating spiders.

Cameras showing the boys as intelligent proactive members of society, and showing up the police.

The cameras would keep them safe.

    rascar….,

Suggested a few weeks ago, there is no guarantee they would be allowed to film inside the stadium.

  5. No way are Celtic complicit in this! Its not as if we employ ex police officers or anything. Ex Police officers who stand up in court against Celtic supporters to try and get convictions. Pah! Some nutters would swallow any thing.

The police just guess where these folk live, and what their names are.

  6. We don’t have to wait for offers from tv companies to tell this story.

The documentary channels are full of shite, programs about nothing with an annoying recap after every advert break.

We have a REAL story, and its not about dolphins.

Its about racist corruption in polite society, at the highest level.

Just film it, and then let them explain why.

  7. Rascar

    Best idea I’ve read.

Technology now would allow most of these young guys to film quite easily, with the addition of professional production.

    Worth investigation IMO

Just saying the idea was raised before,

Even a student film for media ans social history would be no a bad project, but I honestly believe anyone trying, would find very little support from any of the authorities.

    MurdochAuld….,

Cheers for that, hopefully ruffle a few feathers, 7 murders with suspected sectarian cause this year alone.

We stay quiet and wait for our representatives to sort it, it seems to be the way for a lot of people, no way would they be party to suppression of information like this.

Now where have I heard that argument recently

  9. So, I think we need an English camera crew following a few celebrity Green Brigaders.

Against all instincts, and the ethos of the bhoys.

But as a political move, it might be the thing to do.

  10. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    rascar…,

Somebody also suggested last night that maybe some of the board should join the GB for a couple of games, show solidarity and all that, would also kill all suspicion that the board are complicit, saying that, there’s been ample opportunity for the board to show support.

Then again they might have been so busy working in the background protesting at the treatment of the support and defending our human rights, that they just forgot to say, aye that’s what it’ll be.

Hopefully later today the FTT result will be made public and we can all have a bit of light relief

  12. I can guarantee that the EU will refuse Scotland entry. When someone as patently incompetent, biased, and showing himself to be smugly arrogant and stupid tries to cover up ‘hate crimes’ the EU sits up and takes notice.

If the figures and statistics had been left open to scrutiny and an honest attempt had been made to address a glaring issue by Holyrood, then things would be different. But no. In the time honoured tradition of ludge-centric Scotland, a cover-up had to be organised.

As always in the best wee bigoted country in the world, orangeism triumphs; even if it means disaster. What do that lot care. Amalgamation with Norn Iron is probably their preferred option in a coagulated orange state with the r*****s as its crowning achievement.

    Morning,all.

Just read back, and clearly the feelings are largely in support of the GB,and that the board had better not be culpable in collusion with the authorities on it all.

Good. It’s about time we showed our gratitude, and about time we reminded ourselves that the authorities in Scotland are rarely on our side.

  14. Paul

Very interesting your take on the GB affair.

“Football operations the like of which have been reported are not the actions of officers on the ground, they are a political dictate from very high up the food chain. There is neither justification nor plausible motivation for using our tax money in this way.”

Should we not be seeing similar from a high level within the club after all an injury to one is an offence to all.

The next logical step if this is let slide is the next vulnerable group, and we have to ask are we next?

  15. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    MAYOD

    Exactly.

This particular blog has been largely taken up with discussion on police harrassment of the GB,and on Israeli activity in Gaza.

It would be foolish to compare these two items in terms of magnitude, however, they are from the same authoritarian cos-we-can school of thought.

Can’t say we haven’t been warned, history is full of such things.

    It rarely turns out well,btw.

Living where I do and not being especially flush I do not get to games. The experience of being filmed and pointed at by police in orange bibs for the duration of the pre-season friendlies in Wales made me feel very angry.

I can only imagine how annoying it must be to be subject to this intimidation and worse everytime you attend a game. The GB have my complete support and admiration…

  18. morning bhoys and ghirls. at the airporheading for a city beginning with l . unfortunately it’s london and not lisbon. to every one going out over the next few days, enjoy and bring us back a point.

  20. garygillespieshamstring good idea why dont u write the letter and post then fans can download to post or email the club. I thought the gb uefa banner was an own goal by them but the level of abuse if complicit by the board will be a very serious breach of trust between our custodians and the fanbase. Maybe with the extra cash coming in and the feel good factor on the pitch they feel they can push thru their political agenda off it!!!

  21. Good morning friends and welcome to a very big week from a very, very wet and blustery East Kilbride.

  22. Interesting clip on the last page from the Scottish Govt talking shop re the offensive legislation

Christine Grahame whose own thoughts on the matter are fairly widely known ….spells out the basis for the legislation …get the Tims

The polis are implementing this legislation with zeal ..hence hassling of GB

Re the board position …can anyone point me to any positive comment that PL has made about the GB …

  23. Excuse the 7 hours time difference/delay!

I read this blog with dismay. Not much surprises me anymore. The human species has a great range of highs and lows, often in the same person. I read it again and again!! The blog does state “if true”?? I read on past 11pm there were many replies, mostly angry-understandably so, if all of story true!!

Only 67Heaven 22-49 seemed to be thinking as I was. I have one major problem with this account.

Surely the police officer that so willingly gave all this information wouldn’t have been so ignorant/negligent of his duty as to name the security guard who phoned in with the info on the GB member who was “illegally” planning to travel abroad to watch Celtic. Why would he?? Could this not have severe repercussions for both himself and the informant. IMHO it isn’t police policy to give out the names of such!

Also we all know, especially since fat Allies “demanding” rant, the possible/probable consequences of naming.

DOES THIS PERSON EXIST- I sincerly hope not for his sake, and the blogger should have known better.

As to the GB problem I hope they haven’t jumped the gun.

As to the whole problem-sectarianism,bigotry,race- a bloodstain on the human race that just won’t wash off but maybe someday……….

  24. Top of the morning to you all from a wild, windy, and wet Fife.

For those who say sport and politics don’t mix I see the Israeli’s have bombed the Gaza football stadium.

They must have got fed up with civilian homes or maybe they thought the families from the homes had taken refuge in the stadium?

  25. Silence from the Celtic board will be seen as an admission of guilt by many Celtic Supporters. I don’t think silence is their best option.

If Supporters can’t trust them to keep personal details and communications confidential, and Celtic did roll over and break sacrosanct trusts, then that is sad, and most likely very bad for business.

  26. I wonder if Celtic FC would provide video recordings or SB details sought by someone defending themselves against criminal charges brought by the stadium police?

  27. tusker:

Just for the sake of clarity, are you calling the guys from the Green Brigade and the Govan CSC – LIARS?

  28. If we rolled the clock back a couple of years and were told that Rangers had been liquidated and their illegitimate offspring would be playing in Division 4 while we were top of the SPL and riding high in Europe with a win over Barcelona . . . wouldn’t we have thought all our Christmases had come at once?

Yet here we are in the early stages of what could turn out to be a not so civil war between the board and the support. Hope to God the brakes can be put on this before it gets out of control. Both parties must get together and sort this out.

  29. Doesn’t seem like it. I feel there has been an orchestrated campaign by those out to get the board, starting with a misrepresentation of what happened at the AGM. I certainly didn’t get the impression that our chairman or anyone else was out to get the Green Brigade. Nor was there the slightest suggestion that the floor thought that. In fact, the AGM finished with a round of applause for the chairman’s closing remarks. Those present were overwhelmingly happy with what had occurred, imo.

  30. Murdochbhoy, yermanfromMK on

    Good morning CQNers,

A quote for Prof. Tom Devine’s evidence to the justice committee on the ‘Offensive behaviour at football and threatening communications’

……”Why did the legal officers wish to extend this into other areas? Other areas perhaps with some legitimate concern, but areas that are controversial, ambiguous and where the legal process perhaps could end up looking like an ass.”

Quite simply we all know the Scottish establishment have manoeuvred the law to their own ends, but it remains the law of the land and the Celtic board can’t be seen to do anything to undermine that.

The Green Brigade are indeed making the law look like an ass but that is irrelevant to the Scottish establishment, they have us where they want us.

In this year which has seen us achieve one victory after another the worst possible scenario would be one where we turn in on ourselves.

The target is quite clear, let us not give succour to those that would do us down.

  31. As there is some uncertainty around the accuracy of the information eminating from Salmonds SS (Strathclyde Security) a simple statement from the board would clarify their involvement, or lack of involvement in the intimidation of the Celtic support. The planned bhoycott of the next two games should then be seen as drawing attention to the singling out of a small group of football supporters- from a particular cultural background, for such intensive scrutiny. While the MSM would be compliant with this they couldn’t hold back in pointing out the gaps in the stands. I support the GB in this protest
