The Celtic oxygen

604

In a month full of events which resonate with the spirit which inspired those who formed Celtic Football Club, last night’s Wee Oscar 4 Life race night at the Kerrydale Suite was as special as it gets.  Those who were there know they gathered as a community to help the family of Oscar Knox do whatever they can to help the four-year-old through his illnesses.

If you were there, you were magnificent.  Those who decided they would give their time and resources to organise the event are an inspiration to us all.  It was great to hear Bobby Petta talk about the Celtic support in glowing terms.  He has been back in Glasgow for a couple of years and is very much at home in Celtic.  Treble-winning-captain-Tom-Boyd and Frank McAvennie didn’t need to learn about the Celtic support, they were born into it.  Both were there to help and ensure the night was a success.

Performances of the night came from Oscar’s dad, Stephen, Kris Commons’ partner, Lisa and our very own Minx, who sounded like she had presented Children In Need for the last 20 years.  Lisa, who is heavily pregnant, inspired the room with an uncommon touch of humanity.

By late in the evening the total raised was over £25k.  Another simply stunning day in Paradise.

I’ve been offline for most of the last couple of days but have picked up on some of the issues surrounding the Green Brigade.  What I haven’t missed is a single minute of action at Celtic Park this season but I’ve not seen a single incident of crowd trouble or alarm.  This season our games could be ‘policed’ by stewards alone, so it is beyond curious as to why police have any interest in Celtic supporters at all.

Football operations the like of which have been reported are not the actions of officers on the ground, they are a political dictate from very high up the food chain.  There is neither justification nor plausible motivation for using our tax money in this way.

I like that idea. The GB have asked for everyone in 111 to support the boycot. Everyone else singing that for 90 minutes would drive it home!

  3. Benfica keeper Artur: “From what I have seen Celtic play negative football & only seem to profit from chances with not too much effort.”

Cardozo: “Normally I would say Benfica are superior to Celtic. Our objective is to win & we feel confident that we can do that.”

  4. Kitalba just logged on and read your post at the top of the page, bloody hell it seems like the Huns are loose.

Chaps – none of this makes sense – why would Celtic want to alienate the fans?

You might or might not agree with the Board, but they are not fundamentally stupid. They can see what makes CP tick, and – even from a purely commercial point of view – it would be completely self-destructive for the Board to be behind these actions. I just don’t see what they would hope to gain.

On the other hand, there are plenty of elements of the establishment who are anti-Celtic, and I would concentrate our efforts on highlighting those elements rather than playing right into their hands.

Someone else mentioned being searched at the Jock Stein end a couple of weeks ago. I saw this myself – a chap getting the full body search, emptying out every last scrap of paper from his pockets outside the turnstile. Just through the turnstile, two more of Strathclyde’s finest doing random searches. I spoke with one of the Stewards who said the Police were doing this because some fans had been pulled up inside the stadium for having drink in previous weeks – whether or not that particular reason is bona fide, surely Celtic would have had no veto on the Police’s approach to the matter. Although no where on the same spectrum of what the GB (and all traveling fans, including me and my 9 year old boy who were videoed at Dundee Utd) are being faced with, it did feel very intrusive and intimidating nevertheless.

What we are seeing is the Christine Grahame-sheperded Offensive Behavior Bill in full swing, and I do not believe Celtic are behind it. We are operating in a partisan environment, where we are certainly not the favoured club, and I think there are more obvious suspects.

Who is directing the actions of the Police and other establishment bodies?

Did Celtic tell the Police to stop buses twice on the way to Aberdeen?

Did Celtic tell the Police to stop the buses twice again on the way back?

Did Celtic tell the Police to initiate searches at the Jock Stein end?

Did Celtic direct Parliament to bring in the Bill that is being used against Celtic specifically?

Did Celtic engineer the adoption of Sevco as-was into the SFL?

Did Celtic make representations to HMRC on behalf of the club that had cheated them for years?

Occam’s Razor would suggest that those behind the above actions are also behind the actions against GB members, and I do not think that is Celtic.

I hope I am not wrong, but I just don’t think that adds up.

  10. Morning CQNer’s

Not trying to kick anything off – just making an observation(with the benefit of hindsight)

This current festering sore between the establishment and Celtic FC, begun when after the ‘shame-game’….Celtic, and the huns were called to a Govt-summit which, imo, from Celtic’s point of view was – wild and barking – at the same time.

I think(with the benefit of hindsight)….Celtic FC/PLC should have stood strong and, refused point-blank to attend the summit !!!

This action would have dragged the Scottish establishments – dirty little secret – onto the world stage and, laid bare the landscape of this country for the world to see !!!

    But, alas….the Celtic hierarchy – lacked ba### – were nieve – who knows ?

But, I’ll say this….if Celtic’s rep at the summit – PL(I think)…didny know that, Celtic were going into a compendium of the dark-arts of the – masonic/orange anti-Celtic type….then maybe…we’ve got it wrong upstairs ?

The bored/PL etc are the best at – balancing books – being obsessed with 0-debt but, when it comes to standing up for the club, this time the GB, then I wouldn’t be too surprised to see NFL being left to fight THAT corner as well.

I think a statement from the club – NOT FROM A SOURCE – should I think, calm the choppy waters for the time being. Then again…if the club try to – ostrich – their way out of it then, I hope I’m wrong but I can see a repeat of the Janefield Street Riot, inside and outside the stadium.

I asked him to clarify his post, it read to me that he was calling others liars, when – to date – nobody named from authority, or Celtic, has refuted what they have publicly stated.. What is wrong with asking for clarity, I tend to believe the accounts from the Govan CSC and the Green Brigade.

What would they possibley hope to gain by making it up? They have nothing to gain by lying and a lot to lose.

  14. It’s pretty clear to me that the Celtic support are 100% behind the Green Brigade, in fact I explained this yesterday to my friends in the Blackpool Shammy.

We are all Green Brigade’ers. You stand with them because you are a part of the worldwide Celtic support.

If you don’t stand then your not worthy, that my opinion.

  15. Did an ex cheif superintendant who now works for Celtic stand up against the GB in court for a charge that was thrown out?

Did the Police guess the names and addresses of the folk they filmed and who got lifted from home and work ?

And How does this work? A person gets filmed one week by the police, the next week they are addressed by their first name by the same officer?

    ##############

Statement on behalf of Govan Emerald CSC

A member of our club is currently serving a 2 year football banning order which is under appeal at the High Court in Edinburgh.

As is common practice, those under football banning orders are frequently visited by the police in the lead-up to football matches to ensure and remind them that they should stay away from the forthcoming match or face arrest. Our member had the pleasure last week of having two police officers visit his home on Wednesday and the same again on Thursday to warn against attending both the Aberdeen and Benfica fixtures.

Rightfully believing this level of attention to be wholly unnecessary, our member visited Helen Street Police Station to complain. It was what the police said next which is most important – should they be telling the truth that is. They claimed that they had received a phone call from Jamie Church (Celtic security) who had advised them that our member was planning on going to Lisbon for the Benfica match – he was not. This would have been a difficult task for him regardless considering Strathclyde Police were actually holding his passport until this impromptu meeting.

Further still, the police officer expanded by claiming that they are simply acting on the information being supplied to them by Celtic . The Officer stated that they really aren’t interested in chasing up Celtic fans and/or members of the Green Brigade however are doing so at the request of the club. The officer went on to claim that Celtic want to see an end to any Republican songs being aired at Celtic matches and with actually coming out and saying so potentially causing an upset with a large percentage of the support, they are instead working the Strathclyde Police in going after individuals one by one in an attempt to secure bans.

While we obviously hope for this information to be untrue or at worst twisted we believe it to be a worrying development and it is in the best interest of the Celtic support for it to be public knowledge. It is even more concerning when considering how this information fits in with what the Green Brigade have already told us regarding how their members are currently being targeted.

The Govan Emerald CSC and The Temple Tims CSC gives its unequivocal support to the Green Brigade in their current struggle against the police, and indeed any other Celtic supporters currently being harassed or victimised. We call on Celtic to distance themselves from the above claims and going forward to do far more to defend the people who are the very lifeblood of our great club.

  18. BGFC

A fine post which I believe ALL on here would do well to read again.

It is not paranoid to assume an anti-Green Brigade swell in Scotland. The Green Brigade are, after all, the orchestrators of the special atmosphere at Celtic Park. Emasculate them and any attack on Celtic is made much more easily.

Speculating that the Board is somehow behind this is risable and plays into the hands of those who would rather we didn`t exist.

If a crime is committed, the person responsible is the criminal and NOT the victim who did not prevent the crime.

Unity on this matter is vital. I will be supporting the Green Brigade by joining the Bhoycott. Others, obviously, will do what they believe to be correct but the idea that we fill the space vacated by the GB simply defeats the GB`s purpose in having an empty space to highlight their absence.

For the sake of clarity -I never come on this sight to insult anybody, let alone a whole group of people! I dislike that part of CQN.

    \what I did state was – “IMHO”

First off I wasn’t sure of who I was replying to and there are many (to cut it short-not to make more aggro) huns etc., on site to cause discord. I was trying to make sure all was genuine before folks went off the deep end!

My main point was a policeman giving the name of an “informant” away What do you think of this? My thoughts were – unlikely at least, from my little knowledge of police procedure.

My worry was quoting names on the blog which could cause harm as after Ally’s “demanding”.Also “DOES THIS MAN EXIST” was a take on Ally’s “WE DEMAND…”

I’m sure this has been done to death but I honestly don’t think the Edinburgh jury could reach any other decision. Remember the option to pursue a basic assault charge was not pursued, the CPS insisted on the charge of assault motivated by religious hatred/intolerence.

It’s that word ‘motivated’ that presents the problem. As I said at the time, unless you search the defendant’s house and find paraphernalia indicating such, or evidence he’s a member of some hate group you’ll almost never make that charge stick. Even if their shouting sectarian insults in the attack, because the charge is not assault involving religious hatred.

I lay the blame almost entirely at the door of the CPS on this one. My view is they were probably told to, to prevent Lennon becoming more of a sympathy figure.

No questions on the other points though, you’re bang on.

It may have been done to death but you still haven’t understood it.

It was open to the jury to return a guilty verdict for simple assault ie they could have deleted the religiously motivated part.

That’s what they did with the breach of the peace charge.

  34. I fully support the GB. What would paradise be like without their passion? Lenny asked for thunder and bhoy did they delivered. Why ‘OUR’ board does not make a public statement questioning police actions is beyond me. If any other businesses patrons were being continually harassed by the Police I am sure that questions would have been asked a long time ago. Isn’t there a civil liberties group in the UK that can highlight the continued persecution of the GB membership?

I’d be interested to see someone from the Scottish government or Police publicly justify the use of scarce resources when the overwhelming majority of any criminal charges brought against GB members are thrown out of court. What is the real agenda? Is the ‘public interest’ best served by the victimization and criminalization of young football supporters whose only real offence is to sometimes voice a political opinion?
