The Celtic oxygen

604

In a month full of events which resonate with the spirit which inspired those who formed Celtic Football Club, last night’s Wee Oscar 4 Life race night at the Kerrydale Suite was as special as it gets.  Those who were there know they gathered as a community to help the family of Oscar Knox do whatever they can to help the four-year-old through his illnesses.

If you were there, you were magnificent.  Those who decided they would give their time and resources to organise the event are an inspiration to us all.  It was great to hear Bobby Petta talk about the Celtic support in glowing terms.  He has been back in Glasgow for a couple of years and is very much at home in Celtic.  Treble-winning-captain-Tom-Boyd and Frank McAvennie didn’t need to learn about the Celtic support, they were born into it.  Both were there to help and ensure the night was a success.

Performances of the night came from Oscar’s dad, Stephen, Kris Commons’ partner, Lisa and our very own Minx, who sounded like she had presented Children In Need for the last 20 years.  Lisa, who is heavily pregnant, inspired the room with an uncommon touch of humanity.

By late in the evening the total raised was over £25k.  Another simply stunning day in Paradise.

I’ve been offline for most of the last couple of days but have picked up on some of the issues surrounding the Green Brigade.  What I haven’t missed is a single minute of action at Celtic Park this season but I’ve not seen a single incident of crowd trouble or alarm.  This season our games could be ‘policed’ by stewards alone, so it is beyond curious as to why police have any interest in Celtic supporters at all.

Football operations the like of which have been reported are not the actions of officers on the ground, they are a political dictate from very high up the food chain.  There is neither justification nor plausible motivation for using our tax money in this way.

Indeed and reading the cases I can well appreciate the anger that led to the unilateral boycott decision. However as the debate shows there can be no unilateral decisions that do not impact on other parts of the support or the club in some form or other.

I do wish Celtic would take on board the principles of CST resolution 11 (the so called member on the Board one even though that is not a required outcome)in terms of communicaton.

There is only one club with different constituences and the shortfalls in the existing set up that prevented the development of a concerted strategy with regards to police activity are costing Celtic money and could cost them much more if they are not addressed.

  3. The impetus for the new Offensive Behaviour at Football legislation was provided by Stephen House, chief constable of Strathclyde, who urged Alex Salmond, to convene a meeting following the so-called “shame game” as he said there were alarming arrest figures after Old Firm games .

The rest as they say is history. The police got the law they wanted, which suited Salmond as it gave the government hope that more Tims would be convicted in this “catch all” law and this would save the embarrassment of shredding more stats.

Now we have Focus with their high vis bibs and cameras, but nowhere to go….except Celtic Park.

We should be asking our politicians to find out how many times Focus have been filming and stopping fans of Alloa or Aberdeen?

This law was not supposed to be for just one club but it seems that this is the reality…….something we all suspected at the time it was first mooted.

It’s just words on the internet. They do not carry that much importance.

To be fair, Neg Anon has been much more considered recently in being able to express his approval of certain Board actions and not others. He is also quite pleased, as most of us are, with the direction in which the team is heading.

It is easy, and it seems to make you popular, amongst our support, if you criticise the Board , as a default position.

However, those of us, that think this is often a tiresome waste of energy and a source of sowing division, must also be willing to be discriminate and notice the areas where the Board are acting wrongly.

I know, without needing further evidence, that Board members will be delighted with the GB actions that reflect well on our support. I also know that they would prefer the GB to be a bit less rebel-oriented and less quick to try to make Section 111 a Police No Go Zone.

In backing the colour, spectacle and commitment of the GB and defending our right to sing songs of the Irish republican and Nationalist struggle, I would still reserve the right to be critical, if needed, of any individual GB action that I thought harmed Celtic. I also reserve the right to be critical of Board actions, where merited. Mr. Bankier’s statements, since his arrival at Celtic suggest, to me, that he should be limiting his verbal contributions to less Contentious topics. It is time for a more sure footed spokesperson, such as Mr. Lawwell, to clarify what the Board wants in this situation.

We will, I hope, put this issue on the back burner on the run up to Tuesday but it will be a topic that needs o be addresed by the Board in the run up to the ICT and Arbroath Saturday home matches.

  5. The honest mistake – where did I say that celtic could dicatate? What Celtic should do is defend their support where it warrants defending. That isnt a hard concept to grasp is it?

Celtic First – you really are a lazy poster. All I do it seems is be negative and post when ther are negative things to post. They have tried dialogue but it isnt working. Try and keep an open mind.

Agree re resolution 11 for a fan on the board as this could help communications but the CST and CSA have had meetings with the board and Focus and it doesn’t seem to have helped.

It seems that the police know that the Board do not back these groups or show them respect.

If that is the case then I can fully understand why the Green Brigade have taken their unilateral action. I can understand and support it though they haven’t asked anyone to support it.

I think there many people here who feel sympathy for the Palestinians, so what harm posting links to petitions to try and help them? If you don’t like, please just scroll on by. Not meant in a rude way btw :-)

I can only speak from experience and I do not share your perception on sectarianism.

That does not mean you are wrong of course just that we arrived at our truths from different directions.

Now here is the interesting bit. I was asked to provide a chapter for a book hopefully to be published next year on Scottish football and sectarianism. So too was a Rangers supporter.

I had sight of his article after mine had gone and it seemed to support the perspective in mine but we never met or discussed our approach beforehand. Maybe we are both wrong of course.

I cannot say more but I hope it gets published and is thought provoking, challenging and maybe even mind changing. Such delusions of Godure eh?

The SG get a mention btw ;).

  10. Auldheid – your views are well worth airing.

But I fear for your article – my experience tells me that this is about proving we are all wrong.

    Hope not though.

    Cheers

    sftb,

Remember when GB were first targeted by the police,

no long after calling John Reid a war criminal.

Remember the GB being asked to end the add ons and Provo stuff, they complied, since then what’s been in it for them ?

Remember this summer both the police and board excluded the GB from meetings ?

Remember both the CSA and the CST made public statements asking both the board and police to stop the harassment and start talking to the GB.

I’m raising these examples because I know you will remember most of them.

Now please tell me after the consultation with the wider Celtic supporters and requested refused consultations with authorities and board who else can they talk too, there is no common forum, they have been highlighting. Their plight for years on this here interweb and nothing has been done, platitudes and lip service. people are having their livelihoods threatened over this and we should all just get along. The lack of consultation and information is 100% down too the authorities and the board 100%.

Looking for consultation at this stage of the game is a bit rich IMO considering how long it’s being going on.

Both the CSA and CST have tried to negotiate peace, their advances were rejected, should the GB wait till every single Celtic supporter has had their two bobs worth and failed ?

Sorry pal but people have been suffering real harassment for years and regardless who is the cause, it’s time we made up our mind, support the harassment or support liberty IMO imposing new conditions for your support is too late, the bus has left the terminal yer either on it or not.

I know you are trying to be reasonable but further delay in bringing this to a head only suits the oppressors whoever they are.

  13. Big Nan

I could write a book that covers the issues and problems I encountered but only if it might lead to the desired result. Ive got the taste for it now lol.

“Both the CSA and CST have tried to negotiate peace, their advances were rejected, should the GB wait till every single Celtic supporter has had their two bobs worth and failed ?”

Obviously not, but, if the CSA and CST are in lock-step with the GB on all these issues and they have all reached this point, why did they not issue a common rallying cry for joint action? I certainly do not remember seeing that.

As you can see, from responses here, there are many willing to join in an agreed action. Are the GB frustrated with the CSA and CST? I am not aware of that and they are not stating that they are.

So why not a powerful agreed joint action? Why an action by the GB alone with not even an instruction on how they expect fellow supporters to respond?

I do not see life in terms of right or wrong.

I see it on terms of what works amd what does not and that is measured by the fruits our activities deliver.

Are we happy with them and are they working for me without working against others.

What works for me aint necessarily what works for you, but if what I want is what you want and I’m getting it and you aint, then I would not be happy that I was right and you had been wrong but I would be happy that you were finally getting what you were after.

I could not prove anything That is the job of Life.

Thank You for the link. I have posted on here about the Sabbatean Jews previously. I think that ties in very well to what you are posting.

Barry Chamish was the first I heard talking about Sabbatean Jews and he also warns about Shimon Peres as he said he was behind the murder of Yitzhak Rabin.

  17. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    sftb,

True there was not a joint statement but I’m sure both released statements with a commom message around the same time, they were both dismayed at the intransigence of both the authorities and board.

Could be the GB are taking independent unilateral action to keep other supporters organisations from being the next target, officially siding with the GB is already causing supporters great pain through harassment, what real Celtic supporter would wish thay on their fellow tims ?

  18. canamalar

I don’t doubt that over 90% of the Celtic support are appalled by the treatment of the GB by the police.

I support their right to protest as they see fit but I wish we were doing something agreed together.

Anyways, before I hit the sack, I just noticed this :-

I have made some daft decisions with drink in me but this never occurred to me as a good idea. Wonder if our Oz bhoys have tried this :-)

    See me! See drink!

  19. So we are, financially solvent, have an excellent squad of players, have just beaten the best team on the planet and are top of the SPL and in the Champions League, good chance of last 16 place.

Our erstwhile disgraced and morally corrupt rivals have ceased to exist but a Zombie squad pollutes the 4 th tier and the bigots that attach themselves to that sham turn out in large numbers, claiming to be the original being and a world record setting support, so great that Scottish football must be reconstructed, so that they can save our game from Armageddon.

Meanwhile from our position of strength, rather than press home our advantage, in all fronts, some want us to, boycott our own games, go to war with our board, accuse them, without any proof, of being complicit in the mistreatment of a section of our support and in general, negate all the progress Lenny and the bhoys have made by turning in on ourselves.

What short sighted, self indulgent, idealogically motivated nonsense.

Lenny would not dedicate the SPL trophy to the Green Brigade, the club would not allow our reputation to be enhanced throughout the world by GB’s fantastic 125 display before The Barca game, and could not possibly deny the emotion that game and the effect on both sets of players and observers worldwide, largely through the efforts of the GB and our support in general and be so cynical as to betray the same support willingly.

Those who, motivated by whatever means, who claim such against the board etc, ask themselves ” what, given our current position, have they, the board, got to gain from actively, WILLINGLY, betraying any section of our support”.

I do not deny that all reports of intimidation etc, cited by the Green Brigade are true.

Many forces may be at play here, but to blame it all on the board is, IMO, just myopic, prejudiced nonsense. Why turn in on ourselves? Is that not just doing our enemies bidding?

I love what the Green Brigade bring to our magnificent club, just as I love being part of our loving, caring family on Saturday night in the Kerrydale Suite. Think positive, love not hate, create not destroy. The GB at at their best when they create an atmosphere like the Barca game.

  20. The affiliation and the association both do a lot of good work for the supporters but they adopt a consensual, some might say deferential, attitude towards the board, so it’s not surprising that the GB feel they have to move at their own pace on this.

Anything is possible there sadly. When I was in the West Bank there was an American women from Women In Black with us and she told me on a previous visit, an old American holocaust survivor with her got questioned on leaving Israel (trust me, they question! I got grilled for a few hours, bagged searched etc and almost missed my flight home) and not wanting to lie told the guards straight she was a human rights activist and had been in the West Bank campaigning for Palestinian rights. She was taken and stripped searched. When they asked her to remove her clothes, she replied that the last person to ask that was a Nazi officer at Auschwitz. She had to remove her clothes.

I would like to add that one of my initial motivations for getting interested in human rights was seeing Claude Lanzmann’s holocaust documentary “Shoah” when I was a child and being shocked at the barbarity, cruelty and inhumanity of what happened and thinking that had I been present I would hopefully have stood up to protect the Jewish people as I couldn’t have lived with the stain on my conscience of not doing anything to help. And that applies now.

  22. STAND UP FOR THE GREEN BRIGADE…STAND UP FOR THE GREEN BRIGADE,,,STAND UP FOR THE GREEN BRIGADE,,,,STAND UP…………….let this be heard all round the stadium next home game,,,,,,,,,,,,,scunnered with harrasment

  23. STAND UP FOR THE GREEN BRIGADE……….STAND UP FOR THE GREEN BRIGADE …….STAND UP FOR THE THE GREEN BRIGADE……STAND UP…….lets here it belted out around the stadium at next home game…..that should give the over sized guys in blue something to film……..always wondered what happened to their 2 stooges who watched the huns wreck the toilets at last meeting against them (hopefully) at stadium

I agree mate. The Board would be shooting themselves in the foot if they were complicit in this.

I love and support the G.B. , but cannot imagine the board at Celtic Park are trying to get rid of them
