Watching last night’s Champions League semi-final, it is clear that Manchester City are one of the all-time great sides, as well as everything else, they retired half of that magnificent Real Madrid team. There is a belief that City will, sooner or later, win the tournament, but this could be their last chance for a while, or ever.
They have been charged by the Premier League with 113 breaches of Financial Fair Play rules. Uefa banned them from European competition for two years for similar offences in 2020, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport lifted that punishment, as many of the offences were either time barred or not sufficiently established. The Premier League has no such bar.
This is all conjecture at the moment. City are yet to be found guilty and may never be. If punished, they will suffer at least one year of significant points deduction, with possible limits on future budgets.
It is important to keep an eye on what is happening at the bottom of the Premier League table right now. Everton face a points deduction if found guilty on charges of breaking Premier League financial rules. It looks like any deduction will happen next season. If so, Leeds, Leicester, Nottingham Forest, Southampton and Burnley have threatened to sue Everton for £300m, as a points deduction this season would relegate the Merseyside club.
England has a different view on sporting advantage than Scotland. With Everton hovering the right side of the relegation battle, a precedent could be set that would have ramifications for charges for a decade’s non-compliance at Manchester City.
Much of what is going well for Celtic these days happened because of the City Group’s off-field talent development strategy. We have had a profitable, informal, partnership with them for many years, culminating in the recruitment of a spectacularly successful manager and head of recruitment. For this reason, I want their on-field strategy to be successful, because ours is a scaled down version.

“Much of what is going well for Celtic these days happened because of the City Group’s off-field talent development strategy”
Fair enough Paul. I can buy into that.
As long as it didn’t extend to us borrowing their financial compliance strategy.
Am genuinely torn when it comes to Man City.
1. On field, driven by a genius of a manager, they are truly magnificent.
2. Off field – IMHO, they are the best example of the worst of football.
I understand if some think this is hypocrisy.
Am not blind to the fact that #2 delivered #1
Chairbhoy,
Everton is particularly interesting – how can you keep kicking the same can down the same road year after year if they are repeat offenders? Surely, there must be some day of reckoning – or at least you would think so?
Apparently Liam Scales move to Aberdeen is in the balance.
The old guard clubs got together and drew up a set of rules to ensure they remained the top teams. I personally don’t care if City cooked the books to get around such rules. They had the money to spend so should have been allowed to spend it imo.
TIM MALONE WILL TELL @ 2:33 PM,
Yes, the rectification or punishment should be swift and proportionate otherwise it makes a joke of the process.

To a degree, you are correct that Celtic buy success – but our financial advantage is largely down to gate money and merchandising (i.e. supporter funded) rather than dodgy external ‘investment’ disguised as ‘sponsorship’ or some other financial scam.
I do believe though that tighter regulations on loan systems and proper recompense for academy players should apply equally to Celtic as every other club – that would perhaps allow the likes of Aberdeen to start nurturing talent and participate in reserve or ‘B Team’ structures. Might even allow us to develop a decent league.

Interesting, I assume you weren’t okay with the Huns doing similar to win titles and cups??
the_huddle
No I did.
The huns spend money they didn’t have and commited tax fraud to fund it.
City spent money they had.
The Huns had the money, it was paid into the players and managers bank accounts.
It was years after that the taxman came for his share which screwed caused them to go bust.
The side contracts was the cheating part when it came to the football side.
Man City are doing similar with side contracts that aren’t counted as part of their football expense with regards FFP.

– There are, quite simply, 115 charges against them over a 9 year period, to strongly suggest otherwise.

Arab State funding – is that not just using some other poor sods wealth or taxes to fund a fitba operation somewhere else?
Maybe thats what happened to the SNP missing 600k – ploughed a load of dosh into the Albanian Premier League.
I’ve never believed the EPL bubble would ever burst however with City and now Newcastle, with potentially Man U being owned by countries without unlimited wealth then I can see interest waining over the next few years.
This is something like City’s 5th title in 6 seasons plus they win all the other cups, who’s going to pay the subscriptions to watch that??
*with unlimited
No one pays taxes in the UAE
The huns didnt have the money. They’re on record as saying the used EBTs in order to afford players that otherwise were out of reach.
To suggest money was an obstacle for city is plainly ridiculous.
If an Irish American billionaire bought us over and wanted to plough hundreds of millions of their own money into us then bring it on. I’d be all for it.

We paid £6/7 Million for CCV & Jota, £14 mill approx, in 1 transfer window. Does anyone think we’ll pay that kind of money again for 1 player or, perhaps more? Or do we try the Asian market again for maybe 4/5 players? por cierto

SAINT STIVS @ 1:28 PM, TIM MALONE WILL TELL @ 1:45 PM,
Think there’s more but expanded on your guys thoughts, from my recollection we haven’t sold a player to Man City, we have had players from 2008 from Man City
Samaras – loan then bought
Denayer – loan, didn’t want to stay at Celtic and left
Guidetti – loan, didn’t want to stay at Celtic and left
Boyata – loan then bought 1.5mn
N’ctham – loaned then bought 5mn
Roberts – loaned, wanted to stay, City Group wanted too much
Jeremie Frimpong – Bought, development fee!? Sold for £10mn
City Group
Daniel Arzani
Daizen Meada – Loan, Bought 1.5mn
So we have probably paid Man City less than £10mn and have sold players on for around £10mn
Not a great deal in it
Although I have little idea how this works, I think the loan club picks up 50% of the salary and pays a loan fee
So since tha Abu Dhabi’s took over we have paid out eight loan fees and probably more for players we’ve had for more than one season such as Paddy, paid out salaries and paid out circa £10mn transfers in and got back £10mn in transfers out
Had some notable success with a few players but mainly short term and definitely a mixed bag
No profit really in it, City Group winning financially but Boyata, Roberts, Daizen and Sammi good players for us
Made more from our relationship with Southampton without doubt.
Hail Hail

Why have rules at all in that case?
All city have done is heighten the corruption to a new level..as we all agree it pays for football at a new level we love to see.yin n yang I suppose.

That is a good piece of work, ta.
So the “profitable informal arrangement” is not a conclusion to be drawn really.
Some players cost money, and played in chamiponship winning teams.
Others were loans not completed to transfers.
And one only young Jeremy really got sold on and made anything.
Special relationship, methinks not.
Insider nepotism, now that might be a different conclusion to take.
SAINT STIVS @ 4:21 PM,
Yes, without the Frimpong deal it is all one way traffic.
No, it was not a profitable, informal arrangement and under the circumstances an informal relationship is the last thing you’d want.
Hail Hail
i agree, so i am wondering why P67 thinks it is.
Does he just mean Ange and the bhoy Lawwell ?
does neotism work both ways ?

Good shout
Great to have a link to surplus players at any big English club let alone Man City and delighted to have had Ange as ‘ back up’ to Eddie Howe via the city group.
Georgios Samaras was a steal at what we paid, successful loans? who could forget Paddy Roberts John Guidetti Jason Denayer Dedryk Boyata.
Hope there are more in the link other clubs can only dream of.
Nepotism? I prefer good ole fashioned hedonism.
