The City Group informal partnership

160

Watching last night’s Champions League semi-final, it is clear that Manchester City are one of the all-time great sides, as well as everything else, they retired half of that magnificent Real Madrid team.  There is a belief that City will, sooner or later, win the tournament, but this could be their last chance for a while, or ever.

They have been charged by the Premier League with 113 breaches of Financial Fair Play rules.  Uefa banned them from European competition for two years for similar offences in 2020, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport lifted that punishment, as many of the offences were either time barred or not sufficiently established.  The Premier League has no such bar.

This is all conjecture at the moment.  City are yet to be found guilty and may never be.  If punished, they will suffer at least one year of significant points deduction, with possible limits on future budgets.

It is important to keep an eye on what is happening at the bottom of the Premier League table right now.  Everton face a points deduction if found guilty on charges of breaking Premier League financial rules.  It looks like any deduction will happen next season.  If so, Leeds, Leicester, Nottingham Forest, Southampton and Burnley have threatened to sue Everton for £300m, as a points deduction this season would relegate the Merseyside club.

England has a different view on sporting advantage than Scotland.  With Everton hovering the right side of the relegation battle, a precedent could be set that would have ramifications for charges for a decade’s non-compliance at Manchester City.

Much of what is going well for Celtic these days happened because of the City Group’s off-field talent development strategy.  We have had a profitable, informal, partnership with them for many years, culminating in the recruitment of a spectacularly successful manager and head of recruitment.  For this reason, I want their on-field strategy to be successful, because ours is a scaled down version.

Sorry Wasps were put into administration – their buyer was unable to fulfill the requirements for the championship and therefore have to start at the bottom.

Sad news about Wasps rugby club …

… even if Lawrence Dallaglio played for them.

Apparently, the club’s board have been stung by this development.

Yes, no doubts Ange was known to Celtic through Mark Lawwell giving his Dad a heads up on the manager back in the day.

Yet AP hadn’t been primed as a plan b and was totally unaware of any potential interest from Celtic

It was mid season 2021 in Japan, Ange and family wanted a move to Greece, his oldest son is in the Greek military and it is the family’s preferred “final destination”.

    Things change within 24 hrs…

When Celtic’s Eddie Howe deal collapses there is a scramble at the Club for a plan b

Ange is in the running for the AEK job right up to the final knockings, last minute AEK go with Vladan Milosivec

The timing is perfect but the idea that there was an elegant process of Celtic going to plan b is a nonsense

Ange was a knee jerk outside candidate and was a risk

Dermot Desmond got told who Ange Postecoglou was and his potential availability, he quickly did his homework and called Ange, who had been primed by his agent Frank Trimboli

The call went very well, both men impressing each other and the rest is history

A rather wonderful serendipitous event it was, meticulous planing through a partnership, informal or otherwise it was not.

    Hail Hail

We’re not robots ( copyright Ange ) and the league was won a long time ago.

  10. Do the wasps have a b team ?

A man walked into a hardware store, picked up a can of fly spray and asked the assistant, “Is this good for wasps?”

    “No, it kills them.

The timing is perfect but the idea that there was an elegant process of Celtic going to plan b is a nonsense

I don’t see anyone arguing that this was elegant or praiseworthy. Personally, I have criticised the length of time we let Howe dither but Ange was plan B- he was the one we went for next. It was a hastily and tardily convened plan B but he was the B choice not the C, F or Z choice.

Ange was a knee jerk outside candidate and was a risk

A knee jerk was required. The knee had been inactive for too long as Eddie Howe was sitting on it. We were already in June and were just over a month away from a UEFA qualifier. There was no time for a long trawl or assessment period. The club had other names on standby and Ange was the first one they went to- thankfully he agreed and thankfully the club forced it through against many fan’s wishes. Of course he was a risk; they all are. Big name managers fail too even when they have been successful Celtic managers. Jose Mourinho has just taken another team to a European final tonight but he was still a failure at Spurs and got binned by Man U too.

Dermot Desmond got told who Ange Postecoglou was and his potential availability, he quickly did his homework and called Ange, who had been primed by his agent Frank Trimboli

I don’t know if it’s deliberate but you leave out the name of the person who told Dermot about Ange. You know it was the guy who lied to the supporters and cheated the shareholders of this club. He has done so much wrong but he got this right. The managers we have recently been obtaining MON, WGS, NFL, Deila, Brendan and Ange have more experience and success record than was the 20th century pattern of employing an ex player who had done ok at another Scottish club (or 2 in the case of the guy who landed us the big cup).

Our club had to show some bravery to employ Ange and this time they deserve and should get some credit. When Eddie Howe finally said no- there were thousands of managers we could have gone for as a quick plan B but he was the one they chose and imposed upon us in the face of our mistaken disapproval.

I don’t get too het up about cheering or booing Board Activity but, in this case, they are justified in taking some quiet pride.

It there was a board meeting I hope it has given approval for Ange to go ahead with his signings.

He said before the last hun game that plans were well in hand.

I assume budgets for every department, investment needs, projected revenues, personnel levels, individual KPIs etc would be on the agenda.

Plans to penetrate the Far East market should be high in their musings.

I hope they also explored ways to expand Celtic TV transmissions to ALL subscribers.

    Ach I’m dreaming.
