The Craig Whyte narrative. Kris, Leo.

1626

Best news of the day?  Kris Commons wants to be involved tomorrow against Barcelona.  I doubt Kris is anywhere near match fit, so there’s no chance of him starting on Wednesday against Astana, but a 15 minute cameo, when the Astana players’ body clocks are telling them it’s after 2am, would go down a treat.

I’ve always been a bit more ambivalent about Leonel Messi than most.  “He’s not hit the levels of Ronaldinho” is my stock comment, and then there’s the dirty little subject.  (Tax).

But his media comments ahead of tomorrow’s International Champions Cup game, “I have a Celtic jersey at home. The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them”, proves there’s substance to the man.

I’ve a Celtic jersey at home too, Leo.  A few of us here do.

Former-Rangers former vice-chairman Donald Findlay is to defend Craig Whyte is his forthcoming trial.

Whyte’s urban legend is going to be difficult to shift, but it’s not accurate.  We mocked Rangers fans a few years ago, referring to him as “Our Hero” but he never was.  He was the bag man for a very dirty job.

How he handled the SFA, Uefa, HMRC and, most crucially, the insolvency court, when he managed to secure the appointment of Duff and Phelps as Rangers administrators was crucial in the continuation of football at Ibrox.

It was Duff and Phelps who gave Newco the right to use the name “Rangers”, after which point Whyte could claim he was passing on “Rangers”.  Everyone else mocked this liquidation fantasy at the time.  Until liquidation became a reality, that is.

Whyte left Newco relatively safe in the hands of Charles Green, where it would have thrived, if it hadn’t faced a hostile and damaging takeover bid from its first week of life.

Our auction prize, donated by (the pretty fabulous) Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, closes just after 1pm today.

You can win:

2 seats in the directors’ box

Champagne reception

5 course meal in the Walfrid Suite

Fully expenses bar (pre and post-match)

Half time snacks and refreshments

Car Parking

At the game against Kilmarnock on 24 September.

Money raised from the auction will go towards building a school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals. It it will be the 5th CQN school kitchen.

Our four existing kitchens feed over 2000 primary aged kids every day. School attendance has increased 30% since kitchens were built, as kids attend for their daily meal. This has an impact on health, education and life chances.

You can follow the auction on eBay here.  Thank you.

I’m off to Aberdour now for the 12th annual CQN Golf Open.  I’ll be the one holding the jackets.

See you then.

  1. Not sure why Brendan rates Forrest. He has brought nothing to the party. If he wants a move, this would be his chance to impress but he hisnae. Nothing new there.

JF and C McG not producing what we want, otherwise some good fitba from Celtic.

Craig Gordon, some question marks for me.

If you were in full flight – shouting ‘MWD’s Ba”

I’d be paying mucho attention buddy ;-)

  4. There cant be any more excuses for Efe, hes a total liability. Game after game he is at the heart of a mistake that inevitably leads to a goal.

Thankfully none of the defenders on show will be in the first choice starting 11 when everyone is fit.

Only a friendly against the best team in the world but one thing perfectly obvious- it’s not just about match fitness , it’s also about match intelligence.

Unfortunately we have a number of players who just don’t possess enough of that. Forrest, Brown , McGregor and of course Efe.

How many times was Forrest caught offside looking along the line ?

How many dreadful passes to nowhere from McGregor and Brroony.

And as for Efe – why the panic sliced o.g. when a quick look round would have spotted no Barca players in sight?

And what did Brendan say before the game about ‘close your legs’?

You can get players match fit but game intelligence – you either have it or not. I’m sure Brendan can see that clearly.

Still it;’s a friendly and enjoyable

Can’t disagree with much of that.

Not sure about McGregor…..tho he has been invisible this game….

Biton has also has been invisible…..tho I blame the Barca players….

    Enjoying the game….not the score

  7. Booing your own players is pathetic.

Ambrose was woeful for the OG, no awareness at all. The guy had stopped.

Despite score, it hasn’t been too bad.

  8. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

And there is no excuse for booing a Celtic player as reported – none whatsoever, regardless of what mistakes Efe makes, or any other player for that matter.

In his case it just happens too often and he has and would continue to cost us dearly.

I’d rather such mistakes are made in a friendly than a game that counts, but Brendan is not stupid – he knows what he must do. It doesn’t matter how nice any guy is, it’s about getting the team and the performance right and sometimes that takes hard decisions.

  9. Saltire’s

I was a tad slimmer back in those days. But when I was in full flight it was with knee up high as I was taught. If I didn’t get the baw I got the player, went down and normally got the free. Thems the rules. Why keepers rarely do it it now I don’t know. Overpaid shitbags maybe?!

  10. A chance for Armsteong to book his spot for Wednesday.

I’d like to see RC or LH replace CM and Rogic to come on for Bitton.

Tell them a good showing and they start Wednesday.

Oh and give Paddy ten 15 minutes before wrapping him in cotton wool

  11. That’s the trouble with these games, you meet people from America or wherever and they remember your team getting hammered 4-0 by man united or whatever in some random friendly (well to us, not to them- for them it’s a bona fide hammering

A 6 or 7-1 will be cringeworthy here.

I wish to fek they wouldn’t bother with them and charge me another £50 on my season ticket.

A ‘useful exercise’ type phrase doesn’t cut it.

    It’s not worth the embarrassment.

  12. Shocking crowd reaction to Efe own goal, very disappointed to hear the booing so clearly

    come on the hoops…………………including Efe

    Its a friendly……………………………………..

  15. Barca Red Imps ) showing there class without doing much, but we have been better than I thought I think our pressing game has caused Barca a few wobbles .Not to disappointed in the scoreline though we have to make more use of the ball when we have it our passing could be better plus we are to easily shoved of the ball. Need some more muscle in the side

Aye the old knee up works – friend and foe alike got clattered. Highly effective methods and as ayiu say too many over priced/paid don’t seem to have learned their trade adequately.
