The curious significant of 1 June

1642

There’s something I’ve never been able to figure out for the last nine years.  When Gordon Strachan was announced as Celtic manager, on 1st June 2014, he apologised to the media for bumping their calls the previous week, as he was due to takeover on that date, and the announcement was embargoed until then.

No idea why the news was embargoed, but it was.  Tomorrow’s the 1st June.  If the same rules hold true now as when Gordon Strachan was appointed, there was little chance of an appointment in late May.

If you’re not going to the CQN 10-in-a-row Charity Golf day on 4 July the Sean’s Trust Charity Dinner is on the same night at the Fullarton Suits, Glasgow.  Sean’s Trust is run by the late St John Doyle’s partner, Linda.  If you’d like to attend let Lennybhoy know, lennybhoycfc@gmail.com

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

    Clashcitybhoy…..

Think you will find the official announcement about Lenny was during Stock Market opening hours.

    Hail Hail

    —–

Got to disagree, the hours are irrelevant.

There was no LSE formal notification of Lenny’s departure.

Issuing a press release is not same as advising LSE

Cannot disagree with that… Perhaps Neil might though.

Personally, I believe his success or ‘overachieving’ (loaded word that) merited just a little more investment than he received.

It just seems to me that continuing to lead Celtic into Europe, hindered by both qualifiers and a buy low sell high policy would tarnish his success of 2012-2013.

If RK does arrive it must be because he has an interest in future Club policy , whatever that may be.

I accept your points and I accept your summation that its all about opinions – on blogs such as this.

Please bare with me on this one – I accept these blogs are areas you can rarely change a persons point of view – if you follow this to the bottom, i’d look forward to your comments on how far wrong I must be.

Within the board room I expect different.

Like with all jobs – there is a job description of ‘essential’ and ‘desirable’ criteria.

Let me offer my opinion of what that list entails.

    ESSENTIAL

Track Record for finding value in the transfer market – FAIL (Craig Gordon is the obvious one, taking Daryl Murphy to Ipswich is another!)

    Superb motivational skills – FAIL

Ability to coach players and make them better – FAIL

Temperament and patience to work with players who are good and not so good – FAIL (Ipswich debacle and his constant barrackment of Glenn Whelan commentating on any Irish football game)

    Tolerance – FAIL

Aptitude for working under perhaps unfair conditions, such as seeing the key players of your team sold every year and being given 20-30% of the revenue to replace them – FAIL (perhaps opinion)

Temperament to have those in the boardroom over rule you on signings and on occasion sign people you dont agree with – FAIL

    DESIRABLE

Longevity – someone who will stay the course when the going gets tough, or when things happen you do not agree with – FAIL

Feel good factor – ability to create an aura and pleasant environment to those around him – FAIL

Reasonable motivational skills (if fail the essential) – FAIL

Approachable, so your players know they can come to you with any problem football or personal – FAIL

Ability to unite the fans – FAIL

Is it just me – did I allow personal opinion to cloud how many boxes he fails to tick??

  12. Captain Beefheart

We could have spent more (and should have) but we should also have spent more wisely with our scheckles. Too many misses in the last season on the scouting front to replace what we lost. Heads should roll there.

If this is our money ball strategy then this part of the machine has to be red hot from a performance point of view. Interestingly it’s been McClairs bread and butter at United…

Maybe a strengthening of this area is afoot ?

  15. WGS

Legend who had to do what David Moyes could not (or was prohibited from doing).

Take over from a Legend, with his loyal players still there…

WGS did it while lowering the budget.

We all knew that things would be a lot different after MON and HL left.

    I dreaded it….

WHS was a success in a very difficult period of transition.

Made me smile when I expected to be morose and nostalgic.

PS still think what happened to Moyes was a disgrace… And Fergie must carry part of the blame.

  16. PJBhoynyc

“If RK does arrive it must be because he has an interest in future Club policy , whatever that may be.”

Maybe he was promised the same deal MON got. We shall soon find out. Either way it is good news. either we get a strong manager who is willing to work within our current strategy or we are getting a strong hint that there might be changes to our playing environment and these merit a change in strategy.

What would not make sense would be to have a splash the cash strategy with nothing changing in our impoverished playing circumstances. We cannot significantly reduce the risk of CL qualification failure nor increase significantly the likelihood of progress beyond the CL group stages, whilst we are constrained by current circumstances.

I set out similar if not as detailed criteria a few days ago and agree with you on all your points.

He was a no compromise player like Souness. They do not make good managers only good pundits.

  18. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Tint Tim, apologies for my later reply re Amsterdam 1982.

We were still in the ground an hour after the game. Ajax fans were battling with riot polis, somethings never change, outside the olympic stadium. We weren’t allowed out until it finished.

Whe the bus arrived in Amsterdam the previous morning, we drove past the stadium. The stadium walls were covered in pro-IRA graffiti. It was a real eye opener.

There is a photo on e tims twitter of the Commons family on holiday with the Knox Family. Its very poignant. Kris and Lisa definitely get the Celtic ethos.

  19. The hun mob telling us Martin O’ Neill’s team was boring…Larsson ,Sutton,Thompson,Petrov,Maloney,Agathe….YAWNNN……sweeeet dreams.

  20. I’m ambivalent about Keane, however if he takes job I hope there is a sound rationale behind it. Not just that ” he’s a massive Tim and a mate of Dermot’s…”

He must fit into a system of player recruitment and coaching appropriate for a club like ours, which needs to identify young talent rather than purchasing superstars.

  21. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Tiny Tim sorry for saying Tint my dodgy keyboard fingers strike again.

  22. Winning Captains

Is Dermot or Dennis O, buying Villa, and relocating them to Glasgow, as a team called Celtic ?

Now that would be interesting :-)

I think you will find Roy Keane has been given larger transfer funds by his previous 2 clubs on account of his so called ‘box office appeal’.

Hes actually failed on a significant number more so than he has succeeded

    Read these.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1091929/Lets-hope-Ipswich-got-deep-pockets–Sportsmails-verdict-80m-Sunderland-transfer-record-raspberry-Roy.html

The number of flops should alarm you.

The sheer turnover of players should concern you.

The lack of any common denominator in signing any players indicates a lack of any particular plan, which should worry you.

He was also given £8m to spend at Ipswich.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1345071/Roy-Keane–axed-Ipswich-boss.html

Mock McCarthy came in with zero funds, managed to steer Ipswich clear of relegation and then nearly got them to play offs – with zero funds.

So I think you are being a tad selective in which facts you are using to base your support of his appointment

  24. Maybe it’s so called enviroments difference or I’m strange there. Question at the bottom of my post. I have read what Martin O’Neil said about Roy Keane giving straight recomendation for the man on Celtic coach post. Then I have read Celtic statement saying that no one was offered the job. I see most of the posts are about Keane like he was given this job. Newspapers, supporters and all that pressure on Celtic Board to make only one possible choice.

Just thinking, what will happen if people who are going to make decision will make another choice?

Question :Was this Okay from Martin O’Neil to start it?

  28. EWO – To be honest looks a little half empty and perhaps slightly biased. I suspect Roy is a bit more complex than these dimensions.

His punditry is part showman (you can tell he enjoys the pantomime of it)..

His transfer dealings will be heavily mitigated here (and I actually thought Gordon was a good keeper being bought at a silly price)

Superb motivational skills – Hear you but he’s no DiCanio. MON would not have taken him to the ROI set up if he was not a complement on motivating players. Martin is no mug.

Ability to coach players and make them better – FAIL. No data on this but I guess in the detail at Suinderland when he had a rosy patch there were players that stepped up to the mark.

Temperament and patience to work with players who are good and not so good – I hear you but there was a counter argument from some that some of our players coasted last year in games where they should have been more p[rofessional (the cups springs to mind). I quite like the idea that Roy will be a little more focussed on winning these battles.

Longevity – someone who will stay the course when the going gets tough, or when things happen you do not agree with. Some would argue that NOT being a board lackey is a strength. Perhaps a balance against parsimony is what we need.

Feel good factor – ability to create an aura and pleasant environment to those around him. Once again inconclusive. The professionalism from Roy is no bad thing and some players will love it and some won’t. Maybe we need that edge, without it becoming destructive.

Reasonable motivational skills (if fail the essential) – Having Roy Keane in the club should raise motivation levels a hundred fold. No disrespect with Lenny but he wasn’t nearly ion the same class. Can you imagine the impact on players like Henderson and their progress ?

Approachable, so your players know they can come to you with any problem football or personal – FAIL. Maybe but like Jock, Brian Clough etc there were effective number 2s to play this role. That’s why the assistant will be pivotal.

Ability to unite the fans – FAIL. No appointment will satisfy the fans save for say Henke. All others would be too irish, too scottish, too foreign, too unceltic, too etc etc.

It’s a risk and IO agree with that but the same board would have other strategic imperatives when making their choice – Keane is high profile, the league is guaranteed, there is a checks and balances around the club to manage risk, europe is achievable with a bit of luck, decent tactics and a properly functioning team structure in place.

So not panning at all your analysis just its extremity. Some of it may bear fruit but there are unknown quantities out there we could go for who could just blow it too.

Should be fun though if you’re right :)

  29. Eyes Wide Open @ 21.13 hrs.

To be honest I don’t know about the RK appointment ( If and when it happens ). I have an open mind, however I do think it has much more to do with our future direction than playing Ross County et al ( No disrespect intended )

Ultimately as you state minds may not be changed, but IMO your post was by far the most compelling thought out reasoning to date debating the subject.
