The curious significant of 1 June

1642

There’s something I’ve never been able to figure out for the last nine years.  When Gordon Strachan was announced as Celtic manager, on 1st June 2014, he apologised to the media for bumping their calls the previous week, as he was due to takeover on that date, and the announcement was embargoed until then.

No idea why the news was embargoed, but it was.  Tomorrow’s the 1st June.  If the same rules hold true now as when Gordon Strachan was appointed, there was little chance of an appointment in late May.

If you’re not going to the CQN 10-in-a-row Charity Golf day on 4 July the Sean’s Trust Charity Dinner is on the same night at the Fullarton Suits, Glasgow.  Sean’s Trust is run by the late St John Doyle’s partner, Linda.  If you’d like to attend let Lennybhoy know, lennybhoycfc@gmail.com

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

    Bada bing

    Interesting story

I’d be surprised if Glasgow Warriors had that type of cash available tho

  2. McBhoy @ 20:10,

“…..I’m sure Roy has considered this, what is the deal clincher is what I’m asking myself?

    Well that’s for sure…

Roy Keane’s playing career was supreme, managerial – less so…

Now I’ve always had the notion that RK fancied himself as player coach at Celtic, to be eventually be promoted to the hotseat then Man U on Fergies retirement.

Although Celtic/DD sponsored him through some coaching badges it was’nt to be.

Now I believe RK is a very ambitious man, I also believe he doesn’t do failure.

This is an opporchancity to get plan A back on the road.

    He worked under/with Clough, Ferguson & MO’N – he’s got a lot to offer and a lot to prove…

    Hail Hail

  3. In 2012/2013 Neil Lennon led Celtic into the last 16 of the Champions League with a team of an average age of 24, and assembled at a cost of 7 million ….

I consider nothing more satisfying and interesting than watching a young team win, grow, evolve and mature as winners….

When the important elements of that team were sold at an impressive profit it was disappointing, I felt my dreams had been stolen from me …

Makes me wonder how Neil Lennon felt .

Murray Park sold to Glasgow Warriors rumour

No need to change their training routines then!!

  5. If there was any chance of us quitting Scotland, we would have top, top managers applying for the job.

    Still, you never know.

I used to think that RK couldn’t really be bothered with Celtic after 2005/6.

However, in Fergie’s latest book, he quotes him as being very complimentary about the facilities and set up.

  6. Kris & Lisa are the living embodiment of the spirit of Walfrid.

Just lovely people and Kris absolutely is deserving of wearing our beloved hoops.

    God bless em

  7. Marspapa

Caught snippets and was very good. Liked the fact that he re-worked some songs.

  8. EWO – Thanks for the response. I guess I’m trying to go beyond the bias that surrounds Roy and think rationally about a guy who is still young (although not as young as the greatest young manager on the planet Ally) and I’d hope is both mellowing and improving.

I think the sunderland chequebook signings are impossible to repeat with our model (and in comparison let’s remember how close Lenny was to trying to sign James and Bullard) and perhaps I hold out hope that working with MON has improved him, as well as time away from the game to reflect.

I think we are in a place that wasn’t planned and precipitated by Lenny for whatever reason (from the arrival of the hordes next year to a desire to have him commit to x years when he may have signalled next). Maybe other reasons but we are where we are.

All appointments are a risk and perhaps we have to fall back on a bit of blind faith instead of logic on this one. Have enjoyed some of the theories today and can understand the issue of profile being a key one.

It’s all opinions mate at the end of the day.

  9. PFayr

    Cheers my friend.

I’m good for the most part as you’d have seen the other week but the next few weeks will be demanding but that’s fine.

Must catch you and many other good guys for a wee session in the next few weeks.

  10. big wavy,

I plumped initially for Morten Wieghorst. If Laudrup were to come with him, even better. I gather he has signed up for a Danish team. So, that’s that. I seriously would like Gordon Strachan back. I feel we owe, as we forced him out, since some perceived him as not “Celtic minded”. While the football wasn’t too exciting, he turned the team around. He has turned Scotland around too. For the first time in many a long long year, we now look like a football team.

  11. Paul67 et al

Well done the FA! Greg Dyke has upped the anti asking for the Quatar World Cup to be redrawn if Sunday Times claims re bribes are upheld. Jim Murphy has made a similar statement. Thing is, they made both the 2018 and 2022 draws at the same time, so redraw one redraw both. UEFA sponsors, Gazprom won’t be happy, and neither I suspect, will Platini.

    Missed you posting of late.

Hope you guys are all well. Whenever you’re back here please let me know.

I’d take WGS back in a heartbeat. Loved the wee man and thought he was both brilliant and not appreciated enough, especially given the tools left by MON after his reign.

I don’t know enough about Weighorst managerially but I would have liked that continental switch given we can sleepwalk domestically. I guess keeping the teams on their toes and ensuring cup games are dealt with professionally you’d expect Roy to be less relaxed than Neil.

Europe is a lottery but was so for Neil. We both overachieved and under performed there in recent seasons but it gets harder the bigger the gap between us and the rest.

Bigger than any managerial appointment is the emergence of a route out as circumstances will kill us eventually. Just don’t see it atm.

  15. A wee stray thought just entered the ole bonce about the next manager. Wasn’t there some hint about speaking a foreign language? Didn’t Paul Lambert get sponsored by Celtic, while he was still a player, to get his coaching badges in Germany? Could he be the real deal?

  16. PFayr

I’d be lost without them. They seemed to find Tenerife without me mind! Leaving me with the wee dug!

We’re all good and I probably shouldn’t have touched on upcoming matters on the blog.

  17. Thanks EDB, we are all well.

Plan to be over first week in August.

Maybe arrange a reunion with you and Matt in Dumbarton CSC :0)

Best to you and your daughters.

  18. Robert Tressell…..

Henke would be a massive punt with an equally massive risk/reward scenario.

More chance of a Ragged Trousered Philanthropist hailing from Sedgefield in my humble opinion.

Keano is a done deal mate……Henke doesn’t have to risk his legacy just yet!!

    Hhahahahahahaha.

The hand-wringers may have their Keano day earlier than they imagine…

  21. PJBhoynyc

    We can only speculate.

I guess Neil originally bought into the strategy and knew what he had to work within. Certainly, in all his early quotes he is careful to state this and it infuriated a few on here who want more cash-splashing. Though he knew and supported the strategy, it is only human nature to want a larger slice of the cake as you generate profits from previous good buys.

However, Neil knows the score as far as football finances are concerned. He knows that better teams like Ajax and Lyon and Porto, who have been doing this for longer, have had to work within the same parameters. They are all at the mercy of the money from the Big League teams with their TV money. Aberdeen, United and Motherwell lose players to English League one clubs and have to scramble around English League Two and non-league to replace them. We lose players to Norwich and Southampton and have to predate on Championship and League One teams to replace, or go foreign risking poor acclimitisation to this country’s playing conditions and styles, or chose discards trying to resurrect their careers.

    We have had our dreams stolen for a long time ( Wallace/Johnstone/Hughes/Gemmell, Macari/Hay/Dalglish, Collins/McAvennie, Cadete/Van Hoojdonk/Di Canio, to Hooper/Wanyama/Forster??

It is rare to have a McStay stick with us and it will be even rarer as the wage differentials are now more frightening. It will be rare to even get an extension of time out of a Larsson (if there ever is another one that stays as long).

What Neil faced was nothing knew and Roy Keane will have to work within the same constraints unless we get a playing environment commensurate with our support and following.

And I wish the same for Benfica, Basle, Anderlecht, Legia, Sparta Prague, and Steau (but maybe not for Rapid Vienna)

  22. Paul67 et al

I meant to add, could somebody post a note on here when Campbell Ogilvie takes the same stand as Greg Dyke has done today, re Quatar 2022.

  23. TET

Honestly I have no idea. Playing in Scotland will always be a turnoff to many good managers. I had worries about Lenny when he was appointed and that seemed to go fairly well but his sides should have put more honours on the board.

Keano? Well just maybe he could be a success but I feel that he needs to reach out to the support as Lenny did. Anyway as has been alluded to earlier I tjhink there’s much going on that we’re not privy to just now.

  24. Coolmore Mafia on

    Peter Lawwell was asked by a Sky reporter what he thought Roy Keane would bring which made him a suitable candidate – and the best a CEO could conjure up was;

Hes played here – irrelevant answer to the question posed

Hes a Celtic supporter – irrelevant answer to the question posed

Hes a Top Man – irrelevant answer to the question posed.

I am still waiting for a relevant answer to that question – on these blogs, my own soul searching trying to make sense of such a left field consideration

His Sunderland record was at times excellent, mostly decent in perhaps the toughest league in the world. This can’t be ignored at a time when CFC find it difficult to attract top class managers to Scotland. DiCanio, O’Neil have failed there since.

He failed to ignite Ipswich, but everyone since 1979 has also.

He is high profile, which is good for attracting players.

    He’s a tim.

He is a very interesting personality and we all enjoyed his all too brief stay here previously, when he says he felt like a cheat as he was injured too much.

I look forward to the white smoke coming out the Parkhead chimney and His Holiness, Cardinal Roy Keane becoming our Holy Father.

  25. Interview room, CP

Ok Roy, so all we want from you is 3in a row, at least. Last 16 in the CL twice, at least. 3 Scottish cups an maybe 2 league cups, all on a shoestring budget an all the personal abuse you can handle off the Smsm.

    Whada ya say?
