The curious significant of 1 June

1642

There’s something I’ve never been able to figure out for the last nine years.  When Gordon Strachan was announced as Celtic manager, on 1st June 2014, he apologised to the media for bumping their calls the previous week, as he was due to takeover on that date, and the announcement was embargoed until then.

No idea why the news was embargoed, but it was.  Tomorrow’s the 1st June.  If the same rules hold true now as when Gordon Strachan was appointed, there was little chance of an appointment in late May.

If you’re not going to the CQN 10-in-a-row Charity Golf day on 4 July the Sean’s Trust Charity Dinner is on the same night at the Fullarton Suits, Glasgow.  Sean’s Trust is run by the late St John Doyle’s partner, Linda.  If you’d like to attend let Lennybhoy know, lennybhoycfc@gmail.com

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Sydney, Mr Murray is a cracking guy. I always enjoy our rare conversations. One of the funniest people I have ever met.

I don’t think he goes to games anymore.

    Hate this managerial limbo

It kinda sparks that ‘what if’ nonsense in my head.multiply that by possible candidates and assistants and it only begs more questions lol.

On the question of Celtic leaving Scotland I hope this comes about thro the merging of uefa tournaments and those evolving into a midweek european league.i believe there is a path to growth by regularly competing at a high level in uefa competitions is the way forward.I would hate to see Celtic go to England for the money generated down there as I think its going to end in tears and they dont want us anyway..At moment we have European nights to recall and look forward to as champions of Scotland, the same xhampions who won the big cup, that pedigree would be lost with a move.

Just an addon to say that was a superb post and my response was a bit rushed for reasons here at home. This is the sort of stuff that reminds me what a cracking site it can be…

I’m not a Roy junkie and would have liked a continental coach but I guess for all the risks in his appointment there is a bit of OTT from some (not you) on his track record that needs challenged.

    Enjoying it.

The club should have been going for the tenth league title in a row, this season.

2008/09 season was most disappointing, letting go a seven point lead in the league.

The standard of football was dire, let the monkey huns off the hook, big time.

They would and should have been dead a lot sooner.

We need to win these next two leagues and you are half way there. Then carry on with the momentum, invest heavily in players and the Celtic support will drive the team to the tenth title.

    Best days these are.

Then I´m afraid it´s a lot harder to open a British bookmaker´s account & the Spanish versions are a total waste of time but there are ways & means to get round the problem.

Appreciate your viewpoint, however money talks and market forces will eventually decide. The pedigree of being the first British team to win the big cup would not be lost with a move.

Change is inevitable and necessary, indeed the big cup is no longer the same tournament that we won.

Leaving that aside if we are to ever rid ourselves of the “Old Firm” tag then a move is required. Let us not kid ourselves, in time some reincarnation of a “Rangers” will be back and normal service will resume.

Not for me, I would detest sharing a platform with them and endorsing their return, for when we eventually play them that is what we will be doing .

We must leave and let them stagnate

    HH.

PS : Actions have shown that there is no requirement to be born “Celtic Minded” to live the ethos of Celtic.

  14. Greenpinata,

I hope your prediction comes true. We need to be rid of the OF tag forever and we need to be in a league where we can begin to grow. That won’t happen in the SPFL.

SPFL chief Neil Doncaster offers to revamp TV contracts after Hibs plunge into Championship battle with Hearts and Rangers

    May 27, 2014 03:00 By Keith Jackson 94 Comments

RECORD Sport can reveal Doncaster has invited telly bosses to discuss swapping Premiership matches for Championship games.

SCOTTISH football’s TV deal could be ripped up and restructured for next season after Hibs crashed out of the top flight and into a Championship battle with Hearts and Rangers.

Record Sport can reveal SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster yesterday approached broadcast partners Sky TV, BT Sport and the BBC, offering to open discussions on how to restructure the contracts and allow them to screen more live matches from next season’s second tier.

And the talks are likely to centre around four Edinburgh derbies which, as things stand, can’t be shown on mainstream channels.

Under the terms of the current agreements, Sky have first pick on a maximum of five Championship matches, all including Rangers.

BT then have the rights to pick up another 10 Rangers matches while BBC Alba are able to hoover up a further 16 games, none of which can involve the Ibrox side.

But Doncaster has now invited telly bosses to get back around the table to discuss swapping Premiership matches for Championship games.

And it’s anticipated both Sky and BT will be looking to pick up the Hearts v Hibs clashes.

A spokesman for the SPFL said: “The first year of the SPFL provided some incredible drama. The interest in Scottish football is likely to be even greater next season.

“We have regular conversations with our broadcast partners.

“We expect to announce arrangements for season 2014-15 in conjunction with them in the coming weeks.”

BBC Scotland could yet consider showcasing Championship games on their main channels rather than Alba with only around 1.2 per cent of the population believed to be Gaelic speakers.

But if Sky and BT make a claim on matches involving the Edinburgh rivals then they will be accommodated first.

The current broadcast deals are worth around £15million a season.

  17. No matter who the next Celtic manager is the club will NOT change it’s financial strategy.

The new manager will HAVE to work within the clubs existing budget and player trading policy.

Dermot Desmond will NOT appoint Roy Keane or any other manager unless they show a willing positive attitude to accepts the current terms and conditions that Neil Lennon worked within.

Dixie, the problem is you need to have a UK address & you´d have to use a VPN

  19. Lovin’ the love of the Commons people! What an example they are.

Like many, initially I was unsure if I wanted Roy Keane as next manager. However, I’ve been swayed over the past few days by many of the positive comments on here. one thing’s for sure – it wouldn’t be dull!

Just one thing though, is Roy not due to attend the World Cup for ITV? If so, how would that work if he takes the gig?

Not sure about the drivers in all of this but DD is no mug.

Therefore he should about the 2013 summer shambles.

6 players brought in — 5 for real money.

CL qualifying campaign a shambles — team terrified by MB of all people.

Serious money paid out on quantity not quality.

6 new faces — 5 stiffs on the bench more like.

The whole player scouting and signing episode just did not make sense.

If it did not make sense then why did it not make sense?

The Growth Agenda starts with CL qualification.

It then moves onto bricks and mortar and a proper B team.

Getting a name in as manager is a good start.

Then comes the hard work and lots of it — then things should take a turn for the better.

Re-vamping the playing staff is a start — then we need to move onto the non playing staff.

New CEO is only the beginning, suits need new blood and then the shirt and ties.

Easy wins all round — living wage would improve the quality of the grunts.

Wider gene pool would improve the officer class.
