The cycle of sacking managers

654

We spoke about Stale Solbakken here as an option during one of our recent management vacancies.  At the time he was manager of Copenhagen, who were playing monopoly with the Danish game and had become the first regular Champions League competitor from that country.  Yesterday he was sacked as manager of Wolves, who are 18th in the second tier of English football.

Mick McCarthy led Wolves to promotion into the FA Premier League in 2009 but was sacked in February after slipping into a relegation place.  The club were relegated and Solbakken was appointed in July.  Solbakken, still only 44, won five leagues in six seasons at Copenhagen and competed well with a tiny budget in the Champions League.  He is a good manager but his failure at Wolves presents more evidence that the fabled guru football manager doesn’t exist.

Managers are cogs in a management system which involves players, scouts, technical experts, coaches, youth development staff and administrators.  If a club gets all the other components right, as Copenhagen unquestionably did, the guy with ultimate control over team matters will appear to over-perform.   Conversely, if you have a genuinely talented manager but he doesn’t work with a crucial part of the football structure, progress will stall.  Martin O’Neill taught us more about football tactics in his first season than we had learned in the previous 20 years, but he was not known to sign players he hadn’t identified when playing against his teams.

Wolves chance of recruiting a manager as good as Mick McCarthy is slight.  They could do worse than look at how Celtic stemmed the flow of failure by taking a guy who was already working with the scouts, coaches, technical experts, youth development staff and administrators.  Don’t look for a guru, get the system right and find someone who will work within it.

The decision not to prevent entry-no matter the level of intoxication-was taken at a briefing well before kick-off.

I’m not here to be an apologist for shocking behaviour, but most of the idiots who caused problems at the game would have been denied access to the ground had the law been applied.

If the police dont do their job as they didn’t at Dens Park or Hillsboro. You should I hope be smart enough not to take your 6 year old daughter to bank holiday matches that instigated the legislation that the police ignored at Dens Park. Dont you think ?

Can’t believe I understood your post, let alone agree with most of it ….LOL

I feel the Board are being VERY careful not to be dragged into the media agenda until the dual contracts / reorg runs it’s course….I am confident our Board will act if, and when the ‘decisions’ adversely affect our Club …… As they stated. WE DON’T NEED RANKERS ……I also think greengo will head for the hills shortly, and sevco will be liquidated……then sevco 2,3, >>>>>>> will surface……..this still has a long way to go, and they will never fully recover

you would then be barred from attending any match with your 6 y old… o))

no it doesn’t, it you are sitting in a ground and a clown has been allowed entry to the stadium it is the fault of the authorities not the celtic fan…

your safety is not mine our your duty, we pay the police force to protect us…

  12. Question for those who like a lurk on sevco sites…

Is there the same treatment of their fans?

Are they filmed in the same manner?

    Are the complaints the same?

I don’t get how the focus agenda can be against one section of one set of supporters and be seen as a viable use of the club’s money.

Just would like to know if it happens at both.

I understood your point eventually mate! I was under the impression that most of the money I was paying to Sky was going to their big name entertainers – Mickey and Mini in this house. But you are correct I guess – some of my cash must eventually trickle down to guys like Jim White. White is bad enough as he only reads out the “news”, what really galls me when a Celtic game is on and the pundits ruin the game with their clear anti-Celtic bias. I can’t imagine any other situation where pundits would be paid to talk the game down and make it less enjoyable. We’re up against it, but then I guess we all know that…

I genuinely don’t understand why the GB would be ‘supporting the Palestinians’ at Celtic Park ….. where will that lead us?

Good point, incidentally….the GB are us 60 years later……..but I don’t think Celtic Park should be a platform for Middle East politics………we should be supporting Celtic only, and commemorating our Irish Heritage only at Celtic Park….

I would wager that a fair majority of the away support in Dundee were infact local to the area, I would bet my grandweans life on the fact that the biggest majority of the trouble makers were also local to the area.

I heard that from a local poils who would know the facts, a local polis who tows the party line, a local polis who thought the trouble was no worse than any other game they deal with every other week, a local polis who has scrambled egg all over his hat btw.

As I said, I have talked to blokes who were there, I have seen posts from blokes who were there, HT was there, he told of nothing of the like that has been spun in the media, my mates said the same, I know who I believe.

Sevco fans are filmed too, they had a thread on RM about it and some of them reluctantly admitted the GB got it worse. The “union bears/blue order” sound however as though they couldn’t organise a p*ss up in a brewery.

  18. For the record awe naw … Mini paulo wasn’t at dens but does travel to away games regularly.

Blantyretim : exactly … But self policing is required from time to time .

The clowns throwing bangers identification should have been emailed to CP.

Or more to the point if they travelled on a supporters bus they should have been refused on it … Or if somebody was aware of their firework show should have talked sense into them prior or gave them a slap ?

I’m genuinely uncomfortable about going to a Celtic game and being expected to buy in to an agenda but many of us see the underdog as being part of our ethos.

I usually need to know more before making a decision, and even then,I prefer it to be away from the ground.

But I cannot think of an occasion when a Celtic fan has displayed a flag or banner in support of a minority, and embarrassed me as a result.

Point being,it is too easy to generalise. We all have the same opinion about football at the end of the day-WE ARE CELTIC SUPPORTERS-but different ways of getting there.

    Vive la difference……

  25. Sevco will be punished no more. Lord Nimmo will rubber-stamp a complete whitewash and the SFA will breath a huge sigh of relief. Dual contracts will be swept under the carpet that was laid by the FTT verdict and everyone will be told to shutup and get on with it.

Celtic Football Club needs to get out of Scotland. Fast!

Haha! Aye – “beelin'” doesn’t adequately describe it I’m sure. ‘Twas ever thus. Was it Big Jock who referred to Richard Park as “Ibrox” Park? We all know the score – that’s the reason why they all declare themselves as St.Mirren or Airdrie fans. Though as I’ve said before – Airdrie are surely worse as they actually have a sash built-in to the strip.

  29. tommytwiststommyturns on

How many times have we seen fans turn up at games after speed drinking before the game, barely sober enough to get in and then they go downhill from there?

A home CL tie one night where the “rubber man” decided to sprint down the stairs before bouncing off the bottom of 408 or the clown who fell off the Upper North during the Dallas coin-throwing game.

I’m amazed at the state of some fans and how they gain access, but there’s always the ones who are “just ok” at the point of entrance and then the bevvy kicks in. I remember being in the Broomloan at Mordor for a 12:30 ko when a pair of drunken cretins muscled in next to us.

Out of their feckin faces and making a point of getting in ours. They got dispatched pretty quickly as some of our own quickly lost patience with their antics.

I’d be more inclined to blame clowns like that before bad-mouthing the GB, but it is all about self-policing, as the Celtic Casuals found out during the 80’s.
