The Great Leap between SPFL and Inter Milan

859

Making the great leap between playing Scottish Premiership teams and the likes of Inter Milan will always be a challenge for Celtic.  We have done so many times in recent years, Milan were held home and away in the Champions League knock-out stage, Barcelona were beaten, but whenever we have carried the game to opponents of this stature, instead of reverting to our own style of catnenaccio, we’ve lost heavily.  Quicker, more skilful, players, could make us look statuesque by comparison.

This is not a criticism.  If the only way you can compete with a team with ten times your resources is to defend your 18 yard line, you should do so.

Things could have gone either way on Thursday.  We were defensively inept during the opening minutes as Inter found space goal-side of their markers.  I don’t know if Ronny had a moment of self-doubt at that point, perhaps he did, but was simply unable to unwind the attacking instincts of his players, but Celtic are all the better for the way they picked themselves off the floor.

I’m sure the odds on Inter progressing will be short, but I’m also sure Ronny Deila will know his players can win in Milan.

I arrived home late last night to read that Tony Conway, son of our own RWE, lost his battle against Motor Neurone Disease/ALS.  I met Tony, with dad John and brother Martin, three years ago.  Tony was still fit enough to walk, but evidence of the pain the family shared was evident.  The three of them travelled back from their US home two years ago, along with mum Pauline, to see Celtic, and meet some family.

They bought hospitality tickets and minutes before kick-off, Celtic’s Iain Jamieson nabbed Tony and asked if he was able to make the halftime draw.  Tony knew this would be the last time he would see Celtic, so his journey up the tunnel and onto the park was, to put it mildly, a very special Celtic Park moment.

Out for a lovely meal with the missus and in the company of St Martinsbhoy from these pages and his missus, a smashin wee night.

Decided to have a wee scroll through from about page 2 or 3 and see the next few pages are crammed with posters expressing indignation and disgust at the comments from Keevins et al on Clyde.

    The Soldier’s song sectarian?

    Flying an Irish tricolour sectarian?

This has been coming and will only get worse.

I posted on here about the owner of a Gallowgate pub having to repaint his bar because an oul woman on a passing bus was offended by the green and white hoops around it.

Guys post on here continuously about the misdemeanors of the Celtic support.

Don’t sing this, don’t sing that.

    Take the moral high ground.

    We’re better than that.

    Those flares are awful.

I liked the banner but maybe it wasn’t for the football.

Terrible what happened to those kettled on the Gallowgate but really they should just have done what the police told them.

The police must have a reason to film them.

Let’s just sing songs that only mention Celtic.

The Celtic support is made up of a diversity of the population maybe we shouldn’t sing songs about Ireland.

If we do nothing wrong it’ll force them to focus on ‘Rangers’ fans.

    I could go on.

If you’ve expressed these views don’t criticise Keevins or any of the pish stained Scottish journalists who’ve poured scorn on the attempts of Collymore or any Celtic supporter who’s attempted to highlight the real problem.

The OBaF Act was a parliamentary bill aimed at only one group. Us.

Every time you criticise our support you give Keevins, Doncaster, McCaskill, Jackson, Reagan and a plethora of others, the chance to add weight to their comments, articles and opinions.

Let the Celtic supporters sing their music and their songs.

Imo the most important player in deila’s system is biton. He plays three very important roles. He is the playmaker out of defence, he has to support the attack when possible, otherwise the rest of the midfield would be 40 yards ahead of him, but yet he still has to be the 3rd defender between the split vvd and denaysayer when necessary.

This will take time, experience tempered in the fire and quite a bit of bottle. It will most likely be messy at times and if it all works… he’ll leave for losts of money and we’ll have to start again. But evolution is better than stagnation, unless you’re the best paid gardener in Scotland.
