The Hooper-Scepovic lesson

830

Gary Hooper has scored once in his last 23 appearances for Norwich City, an ultimately meaningless goal as his team lost that day.  Prior to that, he scored five in eight in games in which Norwich collected 10 points, while he opened his account for them with a brace in the League Cup against Watford.  The latter stages of that 23 game desolate run has been marred by an injury he collected preseason, returning to league duty this month.

This is not the player you or I will recognise.  Gary was more than capable of going through a dry patch, but he was an undisputed penalty box finisher, who seemed to perform better, the better the competition.  Now he has to sit alongside Jos Hooiveld on the Norwich bench, as his in-form club, with in-form players, occupy a play-off place.  Think of that for a moment, Hooper and Hooiveld, largely indistinguishable on form for Norwich.

It’s no surprise that Neil Lennon wanted him at Bolton, he knows Gary is a better player than probably anyone in Norwich realise.  Norwich rejected the bid, as they were reluctant to weaken their squad, but already this season is looking unlikely to add much to the end of career Gary Hooper Highlights DVD.

Celtic are already on the case to sign John Guidetti on a permanent deal, he’s looked the part since he first touched the ball in a Celtic shirt, but by contrast, Stefan Scepovic has looked awkward.  The early goals didn’t come, he looked short of a game plan and when a header missed the target on Thursday night, one guy behind me bellowed the kind of comment you hope a player looking for confidence doesn’t hear.

I don’t know any more about Stefan than you, but I absolutely know we’ve not seen the best of him, just as Norwich haven’t seen the best of Gary.  This guy has the background we want in a new recruit, scoring well in the Spanish second tier and wanted by top tier club.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a Celtic player as happy to score as Stefan was against Astra.  The finish against Kilmarnock will have built on whatever confidence boost he received.  The project is back on course.  He needs to continue to find the net, and we need to remember how to support a player as he settles into a new life.

We’ve had a great run of momentum with the help of Magners in recent weeks. The club sponsor have offered a couple of premium match tickets, on the back of which we’ve asked for donations from £1 to Mary’s Meals.

It’s been great to see this in action.  We get lots of £1 and £2 donations, but plenty of people chip in with a lot more.  It’s been a great way of ensuring prizes are open to everyone.

Today we formally launch the bid to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.  During 2014 you funded the construction of three kitchens, which feed close to 2000 of the world’s poorest children each day.  All of them live below the UN measure of absolute poverty.

Over the last 20 years the number of people living below $1.25 per day has halved.  Organisations like Mary’s Meals are making enormous inroads.  Those kids aren’t just getting a meal, more of them are able to attend school (up 30%) as they don’t need to work for food.  This improves their academic achievements and gives them skills which will be with them throughout their lives, increasing personal, regional and national productivity.

93% of the money raised by Mary’s Meals reaches those on the ground.  It costs around $12 to feed a child for an entire year.  It’s almost incalculable what your money does.

Magners have kindly offered two debenture hospitality seats for The Celtic Suite, including buffet lunch, for the Inverness game on Saturday, which are available for auction here on ebay.  The journey we had last year in building those three kitchens was remarkable, I know we’ll enjoy the new project.

Current bid is £1 to get in quick!

Big thanks to Magners, b.t.w.  This help goes a long, long, way.

Marrakesh, Clashcitybhoy, the behaviour of the media toward Sir Dave of the Dodges makes me think he may some information on them they would rather wasn’t disclosed in public.

Its the only plausible explanation of why he has been absolved of everything relating to Ibrox and his business practices.

I agree with those saying he damaged Scottish football. He wanted to dominate our game to feed his ego and to hell with the consequences. His relationship with the Bank Of Scotland merits further investigation but will never happen.

I hope while I’m alive to see him doing porridge and his knighthood taken from him

The itch, the bloody itch. People don’t realise how bad it is. Ot’s the last thing that happens to me in the sequence. Vety occasionally it’s the first. It used to start with a tingle around the mouth, then the tin-like taste, followed by the swelling of the tongue or lips and it travelling in a circle round my face. Eventually followed by hands, feet and nether regions :-)) Like you I’ve had a mountain of Epi-pens. I can spell Anaphylactic Shock ( don’t know what happened on my last post). I wish you good luck with it it is reassuring to talk to a fellow sufferer. I ended up in the Royal Infirmary after the 3-0 win against Karagandy and I was discharged from Stobhill Hospital just in time to make our 1-0 home win over Benfica.

.Celtic will not say they are a new club coz it will bring them into conflict with the ruling bodies of scottish football who have decreed they are the same club…

You will not get a not the same club declaration from Celtic…it will not happen…

I have managed to give the fags, back on them, but I know I can stop, the drink the same, gambling is the worst addiction know to man imo, had a mate who was a desperate gambler, went to a GA meeting, they told him to come back when he had feck all, he told them he had lost his family, his house, his job, they told him that his leather jacket was worth over 150 quid, he still had something to lose, he got the message, and fair play to him, he now has a job, a house and a family again.

Marrakesh, Gordon wasn’t perfect by any means, particularly in transfers, but he gets an 8/10 from me. His two most important signings to me were Paul Hartley & Barry Robson, as they let the defunct club players know, we wouldn’t accept their usual booting us and getting away with it.

His reaction to Tommy’s passing away and telling us how much their friendship meant to him was another reason for liking him more.

Dealing with facts is not being pedantic, mate.

I’ve never seen any declaration from the ruling bodies that they are the same club, nor any that they’re a new club.

Reagan avoided the issue the last time I saw him interviewed. Can you point me to this declaration?

Apart from the Rory Bremner remark from PL, I’ve seen no declaration from us either.

So I’ll avoid making my mind up for a bit yet as to whether the game’s a bogey in Scotland or not.

  11. Turning your back on the Scottish Soccer because we have to cope with Sevco as competitors means turning your back on Celtic. I for one have no intention of doing that. Following Celtic has and will continue to be a source of joy and fulfillment in my life. I totally accept that sooner or later we will be back playing a team from Ibrox on a regular basis. I fully accept that Sky or BT will hype the games to fever pitch. There is nothing I can do about it and I see no point in worrying about it. I have no doubt in the days leading up to a game I will feel different but I’ll worry about that when the time comes. As Borgo alluded too earlier, a League Cup Semi Final this year would lance the boil and get rid of some of the venom, rather than let it wait till we have to play a series of games against them in the same year. Personally I hope we draw them in the Semi, & hump them 7 nil. Bring it on.

  12. TET,

I’ve never really been a gambler, a couple of quid hear and there, couldn’t afford it in the past to be honest.

What really kept me away from it was the loss of my cousin Richard, he was lost to it, eventually it took him from us when he committed suicide by throwing himself out of the high rise flats he stayed in.

  15. Celtic host European Club Association meeting

By: Newsroom Staff on 28 Oct, 2014 16:31

REPRESENTATIVES of European Club Assocation member clubs from the third subdivision gathered at the Celtic Park in Glasgow today (Tuesday) for a Subdivision Meeting.

The meeting, hosted by Celtic FC, saw the participation of 29 clubs representing no less than 13 National Associations.

Clubs from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Iceland, Israel, Norway, Poland, Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden and Wales took up the opportunity to meet each other in order to discuss topics of common interest.

In the presence of two ECA Executive Board Members – Peter Lawwell (Celtic FC) and Jakub Otava (Sparta Prague) – the meeting was an occasion to discuss several issues, such as the Regional League concept, the UEFA Europa League access list and the solidarity payments concept.

Transfer, disciplinary and integrity matters were also on the meeting agenda, together with an update on the EU Social Dialogue.

Finally, the ECA Administration seized the opportunity to inform the participants about new organisational developments, and gathered feedback on the organisation.

Commenting on the event, Celtic Chief Executive and ECA Executive Board Member, Peter Lawwell, said: “It is a great honour to host 29 ECA Member Clubs from 13 National Associations here at the Celtic Park.

“Meetings like this one are very useful as they allow us to share our ideas and listen to issues from other clubs. The ECA is a major football stakeholder representing our interests at the European level, and we are looking forward to increasingly working together in the future.”

He added “its very important for us smaller european revenue leagues to make sure our Chief Executives are paid as if we are £300m businesses, so i shared some of the bonus making strategies with the lads”.

Later the execs were treated to a “heated driveway” massage on the forecourt of Lawell mansions, with Martin Bain demonstrating how it helps keep up the perma tan.

After this the discussion moved on to why paying any “living wage” was just a Tommy Sheridan plot against bigger payouts for executives who really need the money.

Particularly when the 2nd job at the SFA pays so little.

    Hypocrite bastard.

Feedback from this and other Subdivision meetings will be reported to the whole ECA Executive Board at the occasion of the next Board Meeting. The next Subdivision meeting will take place on 12-13 November in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Just to clarify, I’ve no problem coping with, competing with, Sevco.

As long as who and what they are is acknowledged.

If it’s not, and the Lie becomes the Truth, same club, unbroken history, the game in Scotland becomes a farce, so what’s the point?

.Celtic will not say they are a new club coz it will bring them into conflict with the ruling bodies of scottish football who have decreed they are the same club…

    ———————————————————————————————————————

All our club has to do is to publicly extend the same welcome to this new club as it did when it first played Gretna or any other new club for that matter. This shouldn’t be too hard as they are a new club whether they or anyone else like to pretend they aren’t. I would also like to club to brand ourselves as “Scotland’s oldest, most successive club” but that might be seen by some as rubbing their noses in it.

If we adopted this line, just what exactly what might the ruling bodies of scottish football do about it?

By the way, I’m with Beatbhoy on this. Any bottling or fudging on our part on this issue, then I’ll be finding some other ways to waste my time on match days.

  20. M6bhoy,

I think if we branded ourselves Scotlands oldest club there would be a few with something to say.

Tet and delaneys. Here is a little gambling ditty, fella called Tim kelly was hung in kilmainham in 1883 for his alleged involvement in the ” phoenix park” murders carried out by The Invicibles, he was actually tried 3 times (the first 2 trials collapsed as the juries couldn’t agree) during his trials he was seen slipping notes to prison warders ( tips for horses) when the third jury was sworn he said to a warder” I bet you a bob this lot will hang me” a gambler to the last

“Oldest, most successive club” is the tag-line I would use in our branding.

    Who could argue with that?

    It is factually correct.

    I’m sitting here thinking :-))

I’ve seen some great Celtic Teams of the past, The Lisbon Lions, the Quality Street Kids, the Celtic team of the early 80s, the 86 Love Street team, the Centenary Team, MON’s team, WGS team, NFL”s team but I love watching this current team. They are raw. In the early days we didn’t know if we would win, lose or draw but game on hame there is discernible, minute improvement and I now feel that we are going to win each game we play. I can’t wait until tomorrow night. Guidetti is worth the admission money alone. This guy recognises that he needs to do well on this loan deal as his best days are behind him, through no fault of his own due to a viral illness, and he is giving it everything. I love watching him play. Whole-hearted. Do any of our older supporters remember that phrase? ( as opposed to poor Asa Hartford who was a whole hearted player who unfortunately had a hole in his heart). Big Bad John is giving it everything to recover his form at Celtic. I think he gets the club as did his fellow Swedes, Henrik, Johan and Mikael. I really, really hope we can sign John on a longer contract. Our support and BBJ are made for each other.

    3-0 tomorrow night. Guidetti (2), Scepovic (1).

    Hail! Hail!
