The Hooper-Scepovic lesson

830

Gary Hooper has scored once in his last 23 appearances for Norwich City, an ultimately meaningless goal as his team lost that day.  Prior to that, he scored five in eight in games in which Norwich collected 10 points, while he opened his account for them with a brace in the League Cup against Watford.  The latter stages of that 23 game desolate run has been marred by an injury he collected preseason, returning to league duty this month.

This is not the player you or I will recognise.  Gary was more than capable of going through a dry patch, but he was an undisputed penalty box finisher, who seemed to perform better, the better the competition.  Now he has to sit alongside Jos Hooiveld on the Norwich bench, as his in-form club, with in-form players, occupy a play-off place.  Think of that for a moment, Hooper and Hooiveld, largely indistinguishable on form for Norwich.

It’s no surprise that Neil Lennon wanted him at Bolton, he knows Gary is a better player than probably anyone in Norwich realise.  Norwich rejected the bid, as they were reluctant to weaken their squad, but already this season is looking unlikely to add much to the end of career Gary Hooper Highlights DVD.

Celtic are already on the case to sign John Guidetti on a permanent deal, he’s looked the part since he first touched the ball in a Celtic shirt, but by contrast, Stefan Scepovic has looked awkward.  The early goals didn’t come, he looked short of a game plan and when a header missed the target on Thursday night, one guy behind me bellowed the kind of comment you hope a player looking for confidence doesn’t hear.

I don’t know any more about Stefan than you, but I absolutely know we’ve not seen the best of him, just as Norwich haven’t seen the best of Gary.  This guy has the background we want in a new recruit, scoring well in the Spanish second tier and wanted by top tier club.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a Celtic player as happy to score as Stefan was against Astra.  The finish against Kilmarnock will have built on whatever confidence boost he received.  The project is back on course.  He needs to continue to find the net, and we need to remember how to support a player as he settles into a new life.

We’ve had a great run of momentum with the help of Magners in recent weeks. The club sponsor have offered a couple of premium match tickets, on the back of which we’ve asked for donations from £1 to Mary’s Meals.

It’s been great to see this in action.  We get lots of £1 and £2 donations, but plenty of people chip in with a lot more.  It’s been a great way of ensuring prizes are open to everyone.

Today we formally launch the bid to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.  During 2014 you funded the construction of three kitchens, which feed close to 2000 of the world’s poorest children each day.  All of them live below the UN measure of absolute poverty.

Over the last 20 years the number of people living below $1.25 per day has halved.  Organisations like Mary’s Meals are making enormous inroads.  Those kids aren’t just getting a meal, more of them are able to attend school (up 30%) as they don’t need to work for food.  This improves their academic achievements and gives them skills which will be with them throughout their lives, increasing personal, regional and national productivity.

93% of the money raised by Mary’s Meals reaches those on the ground.  It costs around $12 to feed a child for an entire year.  It’s almost incalculable what your money does.

Magners have kindly offered two debenture hospitality seats for The Celtic Suite, including buffet lunch, for the Inverness game on Saturday, which are available for auction here on ebay.  The journey we had last year in building those three kitchens was remarkable, I know we’ll enjoy the new project.

Current bid is £1 to get in quick!

Big thanks to Magners, b.t.w.  This help goes a long, long, way.

I had a look at RM

As soon as the football ended they cut to a preview for so police comedy police show and the first words were “you’ve seen a zombie?”.

Clyde 1 DJ Suzie McGuire told Paisley Sheriff Court that she tried to take her own life last April to escape a life of “unpredictable vicious beatings and torture” and described herself as a “broken woman”.

Giving evidence, she described being assaulted in the Grill Room at 29, a private members club at Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow, in December 2011. She said she had hosted the Cash for Kids lunch at the Hilton hotel earlier that day and afterwards had gone on to an after-party with her husband and others, including Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and former Rangers owner Craig Whyte, who was then still with the club.

Ms McGuire said Mr Ashley gave her a cuddle and congratulated her on the amount of money raised. She said: “Derek lost it, really, really turned very vicious and very nasty at that point. He slapped me across the face and bit me on the shoulder in front of company, in front of quite a lot of people.”

She said Mitchell then tried to hit Mr Ashley, and she was “humiliated”.

  3. Is our club paying the LW yet???

Like some other posters yesterday, it may not seem the most pressing issue to some, but this, for me, is a red line for many reasons.

    We shouldn’t let this lie.

Turning your back on the Scottish Soccer because we have to cope with Sevco as competitors means turning your back on Celtic. I for one have no intention of doing that. Following Celtic has and will continue to be a source of joy and fulfillment in my life. I totally accept that sooner or later we will be back playing a team from Ibrox on a regular basis. I fully accept that Sky or BT will hype the games to fever pitch. There is nothing I can do about it and I see no point in worrying about it. I have no doubt in the days leading up to a game I will feel different but I’ll worry about that when the time comes. As Borgo alluded too earlier, a League Cup Semi Final this year would lance the boil and get rid of some of the venom, rather than let it wait till we have to play a series of games against them in the same year. Personally I hope we draw them in the Semi, & hump them 7 nil. Bring it on.

    ===========================

I have no problem with playing TRFC if they enter our division.

However I do have a problem thinking that every time an odd decision goes their way, whether v us or any other team at a critical time that the decision is a fair one. My blood pressure cannot take being taken for a mug.

When our game has become so dependent on corruptly keeping a corrupt entity in business for the purpose of using my money to watch my team being unfairly treated then respect for myself means I have to chuck it.

I’ll want evidence that the corruption has been weeded out otherwise I’m condoning it and indeed encouraging it. Worse I’ve lost my self respect.

Those in charge of our game depend on supporters being faithful through and through and accepting whatever is thrown at them.

The only way to change this is to stop blind acceptance.

  5. Just exactly as I predicted at the final whistle at Ibrox last night. CQN inundated with attacks on Celtic FC and PL. Tell me. What is the difference between Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night? How does Rangers beating St Johnstone change the mood of the blog so dramatically?

That’s right. The fearties are out in force again. PL had nothing whatsoever to do with last night’s result, but by God he gets the blame.

I for one am sick to death of the fearties coming on herd every week and telling us that if and when we have to play Sevco, they won’t be there and their seat will lie empty or worse still, they will stop supporting Celtic.

I and others are dick hearing it. We get it. You’re a fearty. That’s your choice, as long as you tell your grandchildren the truth, that you stopped supporting Celtic because of the Huns.

    Now give us peace.

I may be giving you too much credit but I don’t think you’re stupid enough to believe that those criticising the Board’s approach to the whole ‘sevco it’s the same club’ myth are motivated by fear.

It’s more disgust that we are being played for mugs.

  7. The Battered Bunnet on

How does one ‘dick hear’? Is it a new technique for the deaf? And is it strictly legal?

    We should be told, Tom.

  8. Tom McLaughlin,

Sorry to intrude on your rant. I haven’t attacked PL on here. I have, however, said that I won’t be anywhere near my seat, if and when the undead make an appearance at Celtic Park. I simply believe that that pretence of a team from Govan should never have been accepted into the SFPL and will not contribute its “legitimacy” by attending any match which they are allowed to contest.

I wasn’t on CQN last night so not guilty. However I understand why others might vent their frustrations after last nights results.

Like it or not our future fortunes are tied to What ever happens at Zibrox as the team who play there are the only real domestic barrier to year on year entry to Europe.

The frustrations I feel personally are centred on the fact we have lying cheating Newco closing a gap that should really be an unbridgeable chasm.

The truth is RIFC could give our current team a game. That should never be the case after recent events.

Lawwell has failed to put miles of pure green water between Celtic and Newcomer.

We should be looking forward to humiliating any RIFC imposter team we meet in the near future. Instead most of us are honest enough to admit that is unlikely at present. Not because RIFC are good but because we are so poor. Lawwell has guided us to this point. Fact. He has taken a few too many gambles and still has hiked his fortune in the process. That fortune is paid for by Celtic fans. So I don’t blame any who come on to moan.

  19. Just a point to note:-

Sevco aka the Rangers Internation Football Club are already a member of the SFPL albeit SFPL Championship rather than SFPL Premiership and I believe they already played in SPFL League 1.

Attendance this year and last year at Celtic park is and was tacit acceptance of the metamorphisis! Like it or lump it guys. Your too late to be whinging.

Also attendance at Scottish and League Cup fixtures since their acceptance into the 3rd division of old structure was also acceptance of the metamorphisis.

MWD said AYE don’t blame the messenger

  20. 22 years old, a proven goal scorer, hero to feyenoord fans, 20 goals in the superior dutch top flight, rattling goals in for the celtic………..the possibility of developing into our best striker since henke, great attitude, seems to be good in the dressing room…

On the open market he is a £8 million plus player. Joe, I’d say this is what we pay our money for…to support players like him.

One positive about RIFC in the SPFL is surely our playing budget will increase and we shouds be able to afford £30k per week and £5m transfer deals

Sign up Guidetti. Broonie, the world’s best goalkeeper, and VVD on long term deals
