The jink is a dying attribute

147

It is over three years since Mikey Johnston played a pivotal role in a 0-2 win at Ibrox, which was a pivotal win in Celtic achieving nine-in-a-row for the second time.  At the time I wondered why Neil Lennon signed Mohamed Elyounoussi, who also played left wing, a few days earlier.  Mikey was our future, or so it seemed.

Mohamed is a solid performer, but the calibre of wingers at Celtic has vastly improved in the years since.  Jota, Maeda and Abada are all a class ahead, while Haksabanovic has potential to reach greater heights.  Mikey seemed destined to slip away.

Last night’s cameo on his debut for the Ireland national team was jarringly impressive.  There was a jink worthy of the Lord of the Wing DVD.

Wingers are usually the players most substituted and circulated in-and-out of the team.  Some with abundant talent, like Patrick Roberts, join teams who defend too often to afford the luxury of a talented wide player.  Jota spent a season on loan largely watching his Valladolid team-mates before arriving in Glasgow.

His season on loan at Vitoria Guimareas should be perfect for Mikey.  They are fifth in a table of 18 clubs, 10 points behind fourth placed Sporting.  With little to chase ahead of them, they are free to deploy attacking talent against the 13 clubs below them, but Mikey has only started 8 from 25 league games.

The parable here is probably not to encourage your son to be a winger, unless he is 6’2” and built like the proverbial.  The jink is a dying attribute.

Now I am trying to get the people who care about this pace to stand up, make themselves known

  3. Mod

Just dropped in and I’m a wee bit surprised.

People on this site can already choose to make themselves known to each other. They can also choose not to.

You have invited people to join you on a zoom call tonight and I assume no one took up the invite. You have interpreted this as some kind of dereliction because you want to save the blog from losing posters.

I am puzzled by all of this. I had thought that the mod’s role was to police the site on Paul’s behalf and enforce his language rules. I would have thought it was Paul’s role as the owner of the site to promote it and to seek our support in improving it. How are you going to do the role of impartial mod if you are known to people or if you contribute your views in debates which may turn out to be in opposition to other posters.

Can I ask a simple question to clear the air. Do you know if Paul approves of the initiative you launched tonight? It doesn’t sound like the way Paul operated previously but I stand to be corrected.

I remain puzzled by the whole tone this evening. I can’t be alone in feeling uncomfortable.

Even if I was on when you made that invite earlier, I would have been wary

Hello again all you young rebels.

Just a wee early morning but late afternoon post from me, as

I’m off down our local parks for a floodlit Friday night game.

Expecting a few hoopies down from our rivals Seaford, a few

of our small CSCs are up that end of the peninsula.

These breaks in the season are a nightmare.

Amazing how you miss your weekly Celtic loving spoonful lol.

Even the mod is bored oot his tits it seems.

Would love to have a chat with you mhate, and let you see my

extremely handsome face, only obstacles for me to overcome

would be the fact I don’t know how to set that thingy up, as I

need wee Grace to help me, and we’ll both be sleeping when

    you’re awake, Stralia time.

Anyhows good luck with your efforts.

Gotta go, nets to put up and flags to put out. 🇮🇪

  10. MODERATOR1888 If you really are a moderator you fit this blog with your posts lol 😂 this blog is all over the place at times which is why I drop in every now and then fir a read. Some real characters in here who make the place. I don’t enjoy watching the occasional bullying even when I think the victim is a d1ck a however the odd handbags is ok so long as the combatants don’t take it home and get in dark places. I love the Celtic talk and equally the real life stuff. If it changed, I can read plenty of other sites that have purely Celtic news. Keep the humanity in this blog please. Hail Hail. TB

  11. Just read back yesterday’s posts.

Excellent stuff from Boondock Saint, Tontine Tim and SFTB.

  14. Reading back; thanks for the info on Mark Smith folks.

He always stuck in my mind after that boring end of season game, must have been 87 . Replacing Davie Provan was no mean feat; Colquhoun , Smith, even Rambo on the wing. McNeill’s 4-4-2 with overlapping fullbacks solved it , plus Joe Miller arriving. Great times

  15. ibrox News website interview Laudrup on the no fans decision.

“ But safety is paramount, and problems at the stadiums in both sides of Glasgow have left authorities with no choice but to take decisive action on the matter. “

Printed with no comment so is this what the currants believe? It was the authorities that done it.

SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX on 23RD MARCH 2023 5:23 PM,

I see you make a lot of statements there that have no empirical peer reviewed research support yet demand same from anyone who suggests different.

I provided links to both experts and peer reviewed research that you advised you did not have time to look at. So what’s the point of making it a condition for argument when you just ignore it?

Just the 45 goals behind Messi’s international total then, ‘arry, after the wee genius, who’s not an out and out striker of course, netted number 99 from a free-kick last night against Panama. He’d already hit the woodwork twice from set pieces. The great Maradona scored 34 for Argentina, I believe.

Must have a very good chance of reaching the century on Tuesday against Curacao, which would also take him to over 800 career goals.

The downside of all this record-breaking though was there for all to see in the shocking tackle (especially for a friendly match) to which he was subjected in the first half, which could have caused real serious injury. He won’t always be as lucky.

With all he has achieved, maybe getting out ‘whole’ should be his final prize.

I’m on my way out so this will be brief, by my standards.

I do not and cannot INSIST on anything in people’s contributions. I do suggest and recommend that peer reviewed evidence is the best way to establish the best fit scientific model for any issue (the truth is a philosophical concept and not a scientific standard).

You suggest you have been citing peer reviewed research and I have ignored them. I cannot recall either of us doing so. I do take the time to look at some of the alternative views and pieces linked and I am invariably disappointed by what I am presented with. I will cite just 2 that you recently recommended- Seymour Hersch and Dr. John Campbell- both have similar histories- they were doing good investigative and educative work and Bothe went off the rails somewhere- much like George Galloway- in fact.

The Hersch link you sent was decidedly unevidenced, turning rumour into fact, and citing other possibilities as likelihoods. There were many alternatives to the truths he was trying to fly but he was working in the murky world of International politics and espionage where facts are hard to come by.

John Campbell was a serious educator and initially quite sound on Covid- in fact sceptical about the wilder theories and speculation but he too started to present un-peer reviewed research as something to consider (the Gundry research) and suddenly , like Wakefield, he is the hero of an alt-right group and has an exponential amount of supporters who have forwarded those findings as serious and plausible, at best, and as fact, at worst.

I have to go now- will catch replies later

  21. I had never heard of Dr John Campbell.

Subsequently , warranted a quick Google search..

    Interesting.
