The jink is a dying attribute

It is over three years since Mikey Johnston played a pivotal role in a 0-2 win at Ibrox, which was a pivotal win in Celtic achieving nine-in-a-row for the second time.  At the time I wondered why Neil Lennon signed Mohamed Elyounoussi, who also played left wing, a few days earlier.  Mikey was our future, or so it seemed.

Mohamed is a solid performer, but the calibre of wingers at Celtic has vastly improved in the years since.  Jota, Maeda and Abada are all a class ahead, while Haksabanovic has potential to reach greater heights.  Mikey seemed destined to slip away.

Last night’s cameo on his debut for the Ireland national team was jarringly impressive.  There was a jink worthy of the Lord of the Wing DVD.

Wingers are usually the players most substituted and circulated in-and-out of the team.  Some with abundant talent, like Patrick Roberts, join teams who defend too often to afford the luxury of a talented wide player.  Jota spent a season on loan largely watching his Valladolid team-mates before arriving in Glasgow.

His season on loan at Vitoria Guimareas should be perfect for Mikey.  They are fifth in a table of 18 clubs, 10 points behind fourth placed Sporting.  With little to chase ahead of them, they are free to deploy attacking talent against the 13 clubs below them, but Mikey has only started 8 from 25 league games.

The parable here is probably not to encourage your son to be a winger, unless he is 6’2” and built like the proverbial.  The jink is a dying attribute.

    He had some fine games, including in a 3-0 victory over St Mirren with one paper commenting positively on his performance:

     

     

    “A slip of a lad called Mark Smith stole the show at Parkhead”.

    He helped to knock Rangers out the Scottish Cup in his first season for Dunfermline, with a goal in a 2-0 win. He then collapsed once in the changing rooms. Rangers hatchet man/thug had tried to bring him down in the game, and hacked him getting himself sent off. Mark Smith’s golden match of his career most likely, and one that all Celtic fans will love about him the most despite the unsuccessful time at Celtic.

    Great post my wife about the same Hospital New Years Eve for two weeks caught covid in their and now on oxygen 24 hours , hopefully we can cut that back but God knows if she would be still here without her vax.

    “It’s a great honour for me to win the League Cup even though I had only been here a month. It’s also been a while since I won a domestic cup, so I was very happy to win the title and play with our outstanding players.

    Saw a mention of a fair few going to see the legends game, fair play to them, I support that 100%, but and always the but, I would have thought that supporting the Celtic Womens team should be up there as well, they sure could do with the support and they are now.

    The number of times I have desperately willed Mikey Johnston to turn the corner , to take his opportunity,

     

    to fulfil the potential I was sure he had .

     

     

    Too many false dawns I’m afraid . Injuries aside , he has regressed into a ‘heid doon , run with the ball , dribble ’til you lose it , no end product ‘ , player .

     

     

    Wish I was wrong.
