The jink is a dying attribute

147

It is over three years since Mikey Johnston played a pivotal role in a 0-2 win at Ibrox, which was a pivotal win in Celtic achieving nine-in-a-row for the second time.  At the time I wondered why Neil Lennon signed Mohamed Elyounoussi, who also played left wing, a few days earlier.  Mikey was our future, or so it seemed.

Mohamed is a solid performer, but the calibre of wingers at Celtic has vastly improved in the years since.  Jota, Maeda and Abada are all a class ahead, while Haksabanovic has potential to reach greater heights.  Mikey seemed destined to slip away.

Last night’s cameo on his debut for the Ireland national team was jarringly impressive.  There was a jink worthy of the Lord of the Wing DVD.

Wingers are usually the players most substituted and circulated in-and-out of the team.  Some with abundant talent, like Patrick Roberts, join teams who defend too often to afford the luxury of a talented wide player.  Jota spent a season on loan largely watching his Valladolid team-mates before arriving in Glasgow.

His season on loan at Vitoria Guimareas should be perfect for Mikey.  They are fifth in a table of 18 clubs, 10 points behind fourth placed Sporting.  With little to chase ahead of them, they are free to deploy attacking talent against the 13 clubs below them, but Mikey has only started 8 from 25 league games.

The parable here is probably not to encourage your son to be a winger, unless he is 6’2” and built like the proverbial.  The jink is a dying attribute.

Apologies. I had a wee memory lapse and forgot that only your opinion counts on here.

  11. Logged on to Covid Quick News again there and it’s the same old same old concerning vaccines, ok I get it you don’t want tae get the shots so don’t get them, as for me I’m in my 8th decade now and have every shot that has been made available to mankind in the western world aye even smallpox the first time I emigrated as it was a prerequisite, maybe if I was a tennis player it might not have been mandatory to get one although I seriously doubt it, before being allowed intae the country, returned hame for a few years and when we decided tae come back we were told it was not required anymore as the disease had been eradicated in the North American Continent.

Now I had a violent reaction to it which caused a 6 month delay in emigrating and also a month incapacitated, I also had a reaction tae the Diphtheria Booster when at St Pats which also cost me time aff school, when I returned it was exam time, I failed those so was advised tae leave school, having been in the top set during my period in high school, it was a blow to my career plans, but these things happen, made it in the end though.

As for the recent batch, we’ve had them all including boosters, one of the reasons is that Mrs TT has a chronic illness coupled with an auto immune condition, oh and she also has had Covid twice which included 6 days in the intensive care department the first time as they tried to ascertain what was wrong with her, as Covid was not confirmed in the country, the 2nd time was only minor with 2 of my kids as well as grandkids having it also but again not confirmed.

But it did leave its scars as she has lung problems now and as I write this we are just back from a local hospital in Halton where she had her 3rd Pulmonary Function Test, thankfully its getting better but she still requires 2 inhalers or puffers as they are called, like me she has never smoked a day in her life but the concern for COPD is still there, so please restrain from all the platitudes over the rationales over having the vaccine.

As far as the rapid introduction of a vaccine it wasn’t a hurry up job and may well be worth anyone’s who is remotely interested to research the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA, established years before the current pandemic, their mission was part of a program under the Pentagon’s secretive technology research agency, the goal, to find a way to produce antibodies for any virus in the world within 60 days of collecting a blood sample from a survivor, the program was halfway done when the first case of the novel coronavirus arrived in the United States early in 2019 but everyone involved in the effort by knew their time had come ahead of schedule.

The four teams participating in the program abandoned their plans and began sprinting, separately, toward the development of an antibody for covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

I feel blessed to live here now as we have an excellent medical system, oh aye there are those like the NHS that love to complain about it but until they need it then that will all fall on deaf ears, in Toronto there are a group of hospitals called the University Health Network which is a public research and teaching hospital network, it is the largest health research organization in the country and ranks first in he country for total research funding.

It was named Canada’s top research hospital by Research Infosource from 2015 to 2022, the network includes three acute care hospitals, Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre as well as the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and The Michener Institute, a post-secondary institution granting diplomas and certificates in health sciences and leadership.

Mrs TT’s specialist is the top man in his field in North America, so I think I’ll listen to the experts and no some tangerine heided eejit trying to downplay the likes of the world renowned Dr Anthony Stephen Fauci a man who has been lauded by numerous Presidents, except the phoney with his own not so hidden agenda, who from 1983 to 2002, was one of the world’s most frequently cited scientists across all scientific journals and in 2008, President George W. Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, for his work on the AIDS relief program.

So as the say walk a mile in my shoes as we were pretty much confined to barracks for 3 years, as all the borders, including Provincial ones, were all closed yet we still managed to walk down Levengrove and up Balloch Parks on a daily basis as well as a visit up to the Cairngorms last summer all thanks to the medical help we both received in a country where the William Osler “the father of modern medicine” who wrote the manual that all Universities use for their medical studies, as well as researchers Frederick Banting, Charles Herbert Best, John J.R. Macleod, and James Bertram Collip who in 1921, in isolating and purifying insulin hail hailed from.
