The language of defeat, crowd-sourced media management

1075

Speaking at the weekend, Kenny McDowell looked ahead to the cup semi-final saying “We aren’t going into the game fearing a big defeat.  If anything we are going into the game knowing we’ll have to be on our guard and wary of that, but we are not going into it fearing of losing by a big score-line”.

Admitting that he’s wary about the prospect of a big defeat is the last thing you want your manager to say publicly as you prepare for a cup tie.  It conditions everyone to the prospect of defeat.

From Ronny, it’s all positive: “It’s going to be fun.

“It’s good that this is a big game, so we won’t be underestimating the opponent.

“We are in a good position, we can win everything and that motivates.”

Big games, big results, are often won in the head before a team takes to the field.  You win because you know you’re going to win, because you know you can rely on your team-mates.  You know that if you do your job correctly, there is nothing the opposition can do, short of elbowing you in the face and hope you retaliate.

No game of football is easy and Ronny and the players will know they will have to work for anything they get on Sunday, but the preparatory work has been done.  The players are fit, rested and can’t wait for Sunday.

On a side note, I can’t believe how thoroughly the New Club advert has penetrated media coverage this week.  On top of Motivator McDowell, can you imagine ‘ex-players’, pundits and fans having to explain their existence and relevance in the run up to a semi-final?  This wasn’t a crowd-source advert, it was crowd-sourced media management, which ran rings around the best paid PRs in the business.

Let me know (celticquicknews@gmail.com) if you want a ticket to CQN 11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March – Cup Final weekend, as it happens, or you can buy a ticket at the bottom of this page.  I’m in the mood now.

I don’t think they are that frequent, he wouldn’t get in our midfield just now Henderson is far better and he can’t get a run in our team.

The Rankers Supporters Trust wishes to express its concern at what we consider to be a clear attempt by some online elements of the Celtic support to incite trouble ahead of an O£$ F$£% game which already has the potential to be a powder keg fixture.

We, along with the vast majority of the Rankers support, noted with some amusement the recent advert taken out by Celtic supporters in a once respected Sunday newspaper. However, what has followed makes us considerably more uneasy. There is now no question that a hardcore element of the Celtic support are not content with the troubles which have plagued our club over the past few years. For them, Rankers Football Club, and by extension its fans, must cease to exist.

Whether this stems from an inferiority complex amongst part of a generation who had to live through Nine-In-A Row, or whether it is down to a more ingrained bigotry, a fierce football rivalry is not sufficient for these people. We are extremely concerned that the rhetoric and hatred spewed out by the likes of Phil MacGiollabhain, Angela Haggerty, Paul Brennan’s CQN website and others, is a deliberate attempt to try to stoke sectarian fires and incite violence at the upcoming fixture.

One need only view the reaction of some Celtic fans to the recent blog by MacGiollabhain entitled “The Fenian Blood Festival” to see how these people operate. MacGiollabhain himself has never challenged the assertion that he is “tarred with a sickening sectarian brush” and he has willing servants in Miss Haggerty, CQN and several other online Celtic sites. We urge all sane Celtic fans to ignore their bile.

We hope the upcoming fixture will be fiercely contested. We hope, despite being clear underdogs, that Rankers will win. We also hope that fans of both teams will be able to travel to and watch the match safely. We hope that Police Scotland, as well as policing the day effectively, will take careful note of those who continue to try to incite violence at the upcoming fixture. It would be an odd legal system that arrested people for singing songs but ignored hate speech and incitement of violence. Should the worst happen, we hope the full force of the law will be brought to bear not only on the perpetrators of any trouble but also those who encourage it online.

Rankers and our fans have many challenges to face in the months and years ahead. Challenges which are considerably more important to our long term future than this upcoming O%^ F%$ game. We urge Rankers fans to stay safe, behave in a way which can make us all proud of our club and enjoy their day.”

All that is happening the advert, the anger etc is a symptom of justice not only not being done but actively being avoided by the very people charged with delivering it.

Until that happens our game will feel corrupt, and for some too corrupt to support.

long time lurker first time poster. hi bhoys and ghirls, looking for some info from any spanish based people. been looking at leasing a bar in the costa del sol but a bit wary of getting my fingers burnt by estate agents, been digging about on the web but information seems scarce. Wondered if anyone on here had any dealings with any english speaking agents in that area.

I know a bloke who is close to me, Spanish, estate agent, one of the few honest ones I have come across, I could have a word with him for you.

Pace wise all he needs is a decent watch like the Polar m400, GPS, pace, heart rate and calories burned, also has an integrated activity monitor. Smart phones can do most of that innaw with free apps.

On Sunday Celtic have an opportunity to establish a victory for the good guys

Winning 1 or 2 nil will be OK – the point is to win

But in my 58 years of supporting Celtic never has a better time presented itself to surpass the 7 – 1 result

I will be happy to simply win the game (the alternative is depressing)

But I want every player on it and at it for 90 minutes

It most certainly is NOT just you! I bought the herald on Sunday and saw many references to the OF. Also, during any Library visit ( about once a week) I have a gander in the `papers. I certainly noticed a heck of a lot of Old Firm references. Mind you, as they have always promoted the `same club` lie, I suppose this is their big week. I really hope Sevco fail to be promoted. I don`t know if I could cope with this hysteria three times next season!

    1. Always look on the bright side of life … “always look on the bright side of death, just before you draw your terminal breath…”

I quite enjoyed the suggestion of ‘today’s the day the Teddy Bears had their pitch knicked…’ still chuckling away about that one.
