The measure of Virgil van Dijk

128

It’s the measure of Virgil van Dijk that we’re even having the debate about whether he’s the best central defender we’ve seen in decades. If he’s not, he’s close. That said, measured against the other two players Southampton have secured from Celtic in recent seasons, his ability to influence a game is not of the standard of Victor Wanyama.

It’s no surprise that Southampton have been under pressure to sell Wanyama, or that they have apparently gambled on holding him, better options than Tottenham are likely to lie ahead for Victor. Virgil has perhaps found his level.

I’m off to read all those articles about how good Celtic are at developing >£10m footballers and why Southampton are not as clever as Celtic, just like the ones criticising Celtic for not being as clever as Dundee United.

More on Virgil later in the week, best of luck to him on England.

    Ive nothing personal against Ciftci.

But…I just think if that’s the best we can do….why bother.

Id rather see Anthony Stokes in the team….far superior player.

And then we have to listen to all the board lackeys, telling us how good the PLC is.

I just shake my head and think….is this the level we are reduced to…Ciftci.

    Some strategy.

  3. God forbid the Griff gets an injury that keeps him out for a while, imagine going into the EL and even the spl with what remains.

Add to that a rookie defence, hold on tight bhoys, it’s gonna be fun.

  4. What bit of Gary Hooper, Victor Wanyama, Fraser Forster, Virgil van dijk don’t want to play for Celtic anymore, and refuse a new contract, is it that The Internets doesn’t quite grasp?

He should have signed a contract then? The guy knows how to run down a contract.

I can assure you that people I talk to who have issues with PL do so for many reasons none of which are to do with jealousy of his salary. To suggest otherwise is spurious and wholly inaccurate.

    Anyway, on other matters.

Good luck Vigil, you were a player of genuine quality for us but I prefer the likes of Izzy who prefer medals to money. However, in fairness you always wanted a move to the EPL so no hard feelings. Well done Celtic in trying to keep him and on getting such an amount when it became evident that that wasn’t possible.

Surprised to see O’Connell going out on loan.

I’m well disappointed to see young McConnell go to Oldham on loan, think he’d make much more progress getting a run of games with us, something we don’t seem willing to do with too many of our youngsters. Good luck to the bhoy and I hope the whole experience isn’t too much of a culture shock for him.

  11. Proven talents don’t want to play in Scotland. We give a shop window to players who have it all to prove.

    Get a grip

  12. Press Conference at Celtic Park 6pm. Ryan Christie will be unveiled there. Also interesting to see Official site say Celtic are likely to invoke clause to bring him to Celtic Park on 1st January.

  13. Crazy last minute deals – Enrique’s pee’d-off at liverpool and would be a great left-back for us to challenge Izzy.

    How’s about a bid, Pedro?

As for a creative midfield general (‘Son of Lubo’) – not looking like we’re interested in anyone?

Agree entirely, the best we can do is maximise the profit when we sell them. We’ve had a good return on all of those mentioned.

Not included are those who my understanding is wanted to stay. Ledley and Sammi being two.

  15. Just waiting for the Croat to be confirmed plus our new striker. We always seem to be waiting for a new striker. Also waiting for Derk’s Taxi. Obviously that doesn’t have to be done today if its cancelling contract by mutual consent but the sooner the better. It just annos me seeing his name in the squad.

  16. So Ronny is off on holiday to Malaga?

Any other top clubs have their manager off on holiday during the final 2 days of the transfer window?

Up next is Aberdeen and we have one proven striker and no proven centre backs.

Either Ronny isn’t helping himself or Peter has lost confidence in him IMO
