The most secure club in Europe

868

Ronny Deila has been talking about a treble since early in the season, far too early for my liking.  History suggests that trebles are notoriously difficult to win, even for dominant teams.  The league is usually won by the best team but it’s hard to win every game in two cup competitions, no matter how good you are.

Despite this, I’ll not bet against Ronny getting his wish.  He needs to win four games cup games, three of which would be at neutral Hampden, with only one game, the Scottish Cup quarter final, possibly being played away from home.

The cynic among you will, therefore, expect an away draw, possibly in some far-flung end of the country, like Inverness.  My money is on a trip to Easter Road.  I’ll be happy to avoid Tannadice, scene of our last defeat and a place they’re understandably feeling sort over the loss of Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven.

People of Kirkcaldy: that whole 1994-Ibrox thing, forget about it, we’re OK.

Well done to Celtic for highlighting their position as the least likely football team to financially default, according the US rating agency, Standards & Poor’s.  Commercial and ticket income across Scottish football has fallen in recent years but that was only going to result in Armageddon if those in charge of clubs put an inflated sense of their own importance ahead of paying bills.

See the photo above sent by Mary’s Meals last week of the school kitchen we funded at CQ10.  Work is already underway to raise funds for a fourth CQN kitchen in Malawi after the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, on Friday 13 March at the Kerrydale Suite.  Email me for ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Think the compliance officer only gets involved with Sevco situations, when one of their players has been red carded and he’s called in to down grade it to a banishment to the junior league for the referee.

No matter your issues with other posters it is not your right to remove their anonymity on here. If anyone wished that I am sure they wouldn’t use silly nome de blogs to talk to one another. There are very few who don’t use nome de blogs. it was also pretty much an unwritten rule (may even have been written) back in the day that no one outed anyone on here no matter their grievance.

Sort to hear of the grief that has been directed at you and your family.

Not the same but a few years ago I was organising lunch for the grey brigade on the day of a European game. I phoned and booked the restaurant and put the details and time up for other CQNers to decide if they could make it. I got a call from the restaurant manager who was a friend asking me if I had cancelled as one of his staff had taken a call and cancelled the booking. It was easily sorted but shows how easy it is to get at people.

Re McCulloch..the guys a coward…usually rolls about greeting after he has done someone and know a few ex players who would have loved to sort him out. Again the lack of protection from Hampden shows what every club are up against and Madden and Thompson’s performances for one club against two different teams has been disgraceful. As TET has been saying sort the refs sort the problem.

79 Caps – bah! Congratulations. (thumbsup)

Jungle VIP – About all that can be said for you, Philvis, is at least you’re honest!

    And handsome.

I know you’ve been over this a hundred times before with plenty of us on here and you’re probably beyond redemption ;-)

If The Legend of Ron Burgundy taught us anything, it’s that nobody is beyond redemption. Even podium stealer 79 caps.

But just for the heck of it:

You’re still defending the indefensible: accidents of birth, leading to trails of advantage and privilege, leading to better paid jobs and better quality of life, life expectancy, etc., while reserving the right to dodge out of paying for the services which are often essential to many of our less well-off fellow citizens.

All I’m really saying is this: people have an obligation to obey the law. No more than that.

When it comes to tax, if you break the law you should and most likely will be prosecuted. If you haven’t broken the law, it’s nobody else’s business how you structure your finances.

Nothing wrong with some of that, but to compound this unfairness, ‘better off’ types often want to pay less towards the provision of what many of us consider to be essential services; including waste collection!

I’m sure they want to, but they can’t.

Contrary to this image some folks have of Lord Snooty and pals guffawing at the poor while they themselves pay no tax, high earners and the rich contribute far, far more than their pro-rata share of tax.

On income tax alone, the top 1% pay a staggering 25% of all tax. When you look at VAT, stamp duty, inheritance tax, taxes on capital gains and whatnot, you find a similar pattern.

There’s just no lawful way to be rich in the UK without paying a lot more than the average man in taxation.

So most tax avoidance is at the margins. People who have already forked over huge sums to HMRC trying to get creative about saving money here and there through tax efficient savings schemes. The tax code of the United Kingdom is so horribly complex that it has created a whole industry of tax accountants who help their clients navigate their legal responsibilities while being fleeced as little as possible.

But they’re still fleeced, unless they do something blatantly illegal.

Don’t hate the players, hate the game. By this year of Our Lord 2015, we can’t claim to be innocent of how people respond to financial incentives. So why do we act surprised when people react to incentives? It’s madness.

You or I might think this behaviour is either immoral or praiseworthy. But it doesn’t matter what we think. The law isn’t applied by opinion poll.

(As an aside, I work for a voluntary organisation that supports people with disabilities, with local authorities buying the services we provide. From most of our ‘buyers’ we haven’t received an increase in our hourly rate since 2008. How have your finances faired over that time?)

Surprisingly well, but the fringe benefits have dried up. In 2007 nobody batted an eyelid at putting us up in five star hotels or spending small fortunes taking clients to Amsterdam or Barcelona on expenses.

It was a heady time, like something out of The Great Gatsby but with more men in suits getting lapdances.

Those days are long gone due to a combination of the economy and paranoia over the Bribery Act. Best thing I was offered recently was a ticket to Wimbledon and an overnight at a Premier Inn. To see the mixed doubles or something.

    Pass. (thumbsup)
