The rare joy of Swedish football

1341

I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate.  Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.

I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.

I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca.  The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties.  The neutrals were disappointed.  Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again).  Heady days for both.  I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.

There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits.  Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams.  The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).

Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….

Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

AZ Alkmaar- hardly a European giant. Surely if we really wanted him we would get him.

Do you really think we need him?

    PS

I would rather a CH and a CF.

ps — Just read a few posts on our miserable Tennents sponsorship deal. Is it true that we cannot wear Tennents logo on televised Euro games (alcohol advertising ban)?

Could we get another sponsor for UEFA CL games only?

I like the way your thinking

  3. Pity about Henriksen but it’s an area where we have strength in depth.

Hopefully we can complete on a CB and CF before Friday.

  4. Philbhoy – re Paul McC’s latest. Professional Indemnity cover will only insure you up to the value of the policy (generally £2m), this does not limit the value of any claim.

Some companies will attempt to place a contractual cap on the total liability of the consultants (personal injury excluded), but with the rates D&P were charging and the nature of the service I can’t see such clauses being accepted.

  5. According to Sevcomedia, a group called “Huns Unite” last night issued a statement. This long-awaited document lists a number of what it describes as “Purposes”, these being what most would call “demands”. There are the usual demands such as the reunification of Ireland under British rule, Leggo for First Minister and the Billy Boys for the national anthem. This one interested me:

Can’t think why they’d be bothered about the liquidation of the old holding company which once ran the club.

    Another one bites the dust?:

Rosenborg agree with Dutch AZ Alkmaar on a transfer of midfielder Markus Henriksen.

20-year-old traveled Wednesday to the Netherlands for medical test. He must also agree with AZ on the personal terms, reports rbk.no.

As Rosenborg Alkmaar hope to qualify for the europa league. AZ last won the Dutch football series in 2009.

    …………….

Other clubs can also agree the same fee with Rosenberg and offer terms to him as well. He only bites the dust if he actually signs for them!

  9. The Mullet that Time Forgot confirmed what I posted last night,we enquired about Chris Humphries from Murderwell a couple of weeks ago,but thankfully haven’t followed it up.No more squad fillers.

  12. The time for crying over guys we haven’t put the money down for,has passed for me.The Window is open, identify a player, agree a fee and sign him.We have lost more of these poker games than we have won.

  13. Good Morning Bhoys and Ghirls.

Have barely been on the blog for a variety of reasons over the past few weeks, one of which was this…..

12 members of Tyneside No1CSC completed “The Tyneside Celtic Way” in early August raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, HCPT and The Celtic Charity Fund.

The “TCW” comprised of the West Highland Way from Fort William to Milngavie and then from Milngavie to Paradise. We completed the 108 miles or so in 5 days. It was tough going but great craic too.

I know there are many demands on the finances of those on CQN and beyond but if you are able, please give what you can. http://www.everyclick.com/tynesidecelticway

A huge thanks to those of you who already have.

There will be a little more info about our challenge on these pages in the weeks to come but thank you for your time in reading my ramblings…..

In the meantime, Good Luck to Neil and The Bhoys tonight. Let’s raise the roof! See you in Paradise!

Well, Radio Scotland did its best this morning to play down our game tonight. Mention of it was tagged on to their coverage of last night’s League Cup matches. Almost an afterthought, which they couldn’t completely overlook. There must be some seriously hurting folk at Pacific Quay.

Everything ready for game just need clock to hurry up.

If we stay calm(players & fans) I think we will over run them in the last 20mins.

Games like this I head into the town early (save we pacing the floor any more)

Chippy dinner walk to the ground and soak it all in.

Don’t think the prospect of losing a few thousand customers in Larkhall, Kilwinning and other hun strongholds would worry them unduly tbh.

I looked at some of the teams above us in the seedings, and unless they have improved beyond all recognition, then I don’t fear them – Copenhagen & Braga for example.

Although, we can’t have your second group, as Porto and Braga can’t be in same Group.

  26. So,Lord Haw Hawdges not come out of his shell yet? Los Dufferos still swillin’ the champers as the continue in the admin. scam? SFA still flip flopping like landed fish? Police still draggin’ their heels and viewing everything through the wrong end of the telescope? Weren’t there some other incompetent inquiries goin’ on? The lazy, hazy crazy days of summer.

Any,any any other club that had behaved like the angry razor-boys formerly known as rfc would have been mercilessly hammered into pieces by now, ripped to shreds in a variety of courts and unceremoniously buried in the furthest corner of the cemetery.

But no,according to the scurrilous msm, they live on as if nothing has changed and nothing ever will. We stupid peasants have been told.

Maybe they’ll get their stupid heads together and write a bestselling self help manual and call it “How To Commit Major Fraud and Get Away with It.”

I know we have a huge game tonight. And, to me, THAT is the most important thing.

However, the domestic game as a whole in Scotland is smashed to bits by the hun ratbags and their cheerleader/apologists bitchslappin’ us all on a daily basis.

  30. That article by Paul McC is incredible. What was it Plato said: great minds left uneducated excel in crime- are lawyers like Duff & Phelps criminal minds educated to excel in law? Unbelievable. Why is the legal system so stacked in favour of profiting self-aggrandizing and overweening lawyers? You can hardly do anything these days without a lawyer. Then they charge you a fortune for a signature on a piece of paper. The Hun administration was an elaborate sting from day one. The figures Paul shows back that up. Lawyers like Duff & Phelps charge a fee that seems to suggest the value of their time- like the world would be a dysfunctional place without them. Its a gravy train and who can blame the crooks for riding that crazy bullet? But surely there has to be a better system that recompenses creditors rather than remunerating fat cat shyster lawyers?

Aha, the ole ‘same country’ rule. Had forgotten about that. Agree we have less to fear from Braga but for some reason I’d rather we didn’t get them.
