I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate. Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.
I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.
I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca. The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties. The neutrals were disappointed. Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again). Heady days for both. I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.
There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits. Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams. The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).
Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….
Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

Flouncin means you don’t INTEND to return.
A year ago we were reeling from defeat against Sion.
I was fresh from scouring the state for a generator to provide emergency power should the approaching Hurricane Irene inflict the damage predicted.
We were storing water, food and candies for the kids big and small.
Batteries and lanterns were stored in handy locations and the generator was tested with leads to the sump pump in the basement and the fridge.
By the grace of God the hurricane’s path went slightly east making the tape on the windows and other preparations needless.
Likewise we survived the embarassing defeat to Sion and got in to the Europa League.
Neil and his young team then had the benefit of useful European experience which helped us win the SPL, despite the predictions of the MSM that the schedule would be too burdensome for us.
What a difference a year makes.
The storm of truth has exposed Rangers(IL) as a busted flush.
The team that Neil built is about to roar ots way into the CL groups to the sound of thunder from a packed Celtic Park.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a beautiful sunny day here despite the storm battering the Gulf Coast. Even if it rains at CP tomorrow night, as if it would do anything else, there will be a rainbow with a pot of gold at the end of it.
This autumn will be full of thunder and colour as the CL theme rings round CP.
Seek our pot of gold bhoys.

Nearly bedtime here in the Pacific Northwest. I have to admit it’s going to be a restless night. Are our fine young management team and players not on the verge of something special? In Lenny we trust.
P.S. A wall of sound at Paradise tomorrow please!
Shhh. In Weedgie land, can you hear the sound of thunder?….
Is it the underpants of the clan Smith or is it Lenny and his Lions?……:)
Rascar-
Always been a proponent of 85%+ cacao chocolate myself too. Organic if you get get your hands on it. One of natures true super foods.
Mon the hoops
Wonder if Master Watt is going to see any game time tomorrow?
Stump town
I think Neil will stick to his tried and tested line up, if they are all fit of course.
Hooper and Sammi will get the duties up front with Watt held in reserve for when either tires.
Our first order of business is to ensure we don’t concede a goal, especially early on.
Do that and we are golden.
I won’t care if it’s ugly so long as its effective.

Good morning friends, old and new, from a pretty wet and gloomy looking East KIlbride.
Now feeling just a wee bit nervous about tonight. I think we’re only 1 goal away from being certain to qualify and I hope it comes early.

A very good morning to everybody!
Just under 13 hours to go!
Quietly confident that the bhoys will do the business tonight – disciplined, keep their shape and possession, with young Jamesy and Sammi stretching them down the flanks!
Can’t be there in person, but will be in spirit!
C’mon you bhoys in green n white!

Morning from a bright mild Chilterns…
We have a plethora of posters new – great to see, do we have an Enigmatic Estadio, a forensic H,R,B&T, an Optimistic Neganon, a Sane Madmitch, a ubiquitious DBBIA, a Keynsian Philvis, a disillusioned Declan, a Noel90 in fighting Irish mode? Time will tell.
Huge game tonight, huge performance needed.
In Lenny and the bhoys we trust.
Celtic 2-1 Helsingborgs
Heading to Morira……….

By the way,are yellow cards in the qualifiers not wiped out?
That puts the seeds at yet another advantage otherwise.
+++++
Yellows are; suspensions incurred due to yellows are not. Had Lima from Braga been booked last night he would have missed their first CL Group match.
Watch out Forster, Mulgrew and Rogne – no silly ones eh?
Morning,

@@@@OSCAR KNOX APPEAL@@@@
Hello , just to let you know that I am planning to take part in a 50 mile cycle from Glasgow to Edinburgh, 09/09/2012
During the next 2 weeks I plan to train very hard in order to be able to take part in this cycle where I would hope to be able raise some funds for “Wee Oscar Knox” who is 3 year old kid and is not keeping very well just now.
You can read Oscar’s story on web link below….

In the meantime, all donations are welcome, thanks

Can’t understand the level of nervousness about tonight. We are 2-0 up from the first leg. There is no chance we will blow this. Relax Bhoys n Ghirls. I could understand if we were behind or on a 0-0.
I’m tipping 3-0 Celtic.
Bring on the Man City.
Charlie Mulgrew “I cleaned the boots the night Celtic beat Lyon & Miller scored that goal. To be involved now is really special”.
Celtic legend in tha making
BigjoeStillnot surewherIamwatchingtheGame
Tom I think that taking away 2-0 from Sweden was a great result. Could have been even better but if Helsingburg players had shooting boots on they would have scored a hatful too. I expect Celtic to attack at Celtic Park so should win the game and I have no doubt win the tie. We will leave gaps pushing up and I would be surprised if the borg keep on missing forever. Confident yes.Over confident no. Think we will be partying in the morning.
@RalstonRow. The 3-1 game at Hampden was on 16 September 1972 and was my first game against Rangers. The date stuck as these things sometimes do….. Jinky scored with a header against Peter McCloy. It was our day for sure. I recall my late father telling me afterwards that the reason he picked that occasion for my first derby game was his absolute confidence that we would win. He was right. Great memories.
Apparently Emile Heskey is in talks to join The Rangers. Never knew the SFA imposed a goal scoring ban on them also.
Emile Heskey’s club stats 1994-2012:
546 games
117 goals.
Heskey and the huns – a marriage made in hell!
