The rare joy of Swedish football

1341

I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate.  Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.

I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.

I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca.  The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties.  The neutrals were disappointed.  Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again).  Heady days for both.  I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.

There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits.  Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams.  The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).

Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….

Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

    Morning all.

Looks like a minimum 54,000 for tonights match.

With the last minute bhoys and ghirls, should be close to capacity.

    Bring it on!

A focussed, professional performance from Lenny and his young stars is the requirement tonight.

I’m rather looking forward to it. Haven’t been to a European tie with my Dad since… gosh, maybe Wisla Krakow in 1976? Been a while anyway.

    Mon the Hoops.

We’re 90 minutes from glory, a full house a Celtic Park should tip the balance in our favour tonight, Celts too strong for plucky Swedes in a 3-0 mash up!!

  7. Due to family bereavement I have had to give my 2 tickets away for tonight’s game.

NFL will have the bhoys focused, a professional performance keeping it tight at the back, we do not need to chase this game. As they become more desperate they will leave gaps which we will exploit. Hooper and Commons to score and see us through.

Come on you Bhoys in Green.

  8. Guys, looking for a bit of advice.

I head East after the games, and usually park near the old Fire Station but the traffic is horrendous going along London Road to the McDonalds and M74.

Is there any benefit in trying the new road to the M74 from just past the Superstore? Does the traffic flow quicker?

Good morning all from a dismal Paisley….nothing new there. can’t make the game tonight (aaaaaagggghhhh). The wee fella has started playing with a new team and it’s their first training session tonight and to be honest i need the brownie points for up and coming golf weekend at Dalmahoy. So to all that’s going tonight enjoy and make lot’s of noise, another 2-0 victory for the Hoops.

Oh and while i’m on, well done to Mark and Dougie on SSB last night for showing wiggy up for the prat that he is. For those few that were listening, did you notice that after those 2 calls it was huns, pseudo celtic fans and the jolly buddie.

  11. Morning, All, from a dull and blowy down-town Glasgow.

Got to say: there’s been an awful lot of nerves on display from the nightshift bhoys.

    Vitamin D deficiency?

Okay, so Helsinborgs are better than Helsinki, but this is a few weeks down the line, we’re gathering some momentum and we’re at home in the second leg of the tie.

Plus, the players and staff know the importance of this game and are not going to pass up the opportunity …

So: a few wee prices worth considering:

    (HT/FT) Celtic/Celtic = 5/4

    (HT/FT) Draw/Celtic = 100/30

Both teams to score = 6/5

To be honest, i think you really need to be the missing link to listen to it, i seem to get sucked in when i’m in the car, it’s marginally better than listening to Adrihun durham and the fat cricketer.

Cant help you with the link but i’m sure someone else on here can help. Definetely worth listening to those calls last night though.

  19. Going to be a slow day today, what’s worse is that I’m missing the game tonight, rookie error on my part.

Will be an unbelievable atmosphere, just hope the crowd keep behind the team even if things are not going to plan.

  20. We were in the old north stand that day at Hampden and if memory serves jinky was a doubtful starter that day but when the announcer confirmed his appearance a massive roar went up from the Celtic end and I remember loads of fans with jinky style balloons then as you say he tore them to shreds -still have the stub with 4-0 written on it

  21. ernie maybe pass that on to old chuckles green and he can buy them on the cheap and claim there history.

    Enjoy your break!

Played golf yesterday at Kingsfield (Linlithgow) yesterday.

Difficult to gauge how well I played as it was blowing a gale, however, I hit the ball solidly into the rough most of the time!

    Take care!

  24. In which I look at what Duff and Phelps have cost the creditors of Rangers, and what they have been spending time on since they sold off all the assets in June.

I also take a very “broad axe” approach to the value of the administration process, which seems to suggest that the creditors would have been several million pounds better off if the liquidators had come in on 14th February!

    The figures are mind-boggling.

That applies to each of the total costs, the weekly bills, the hourly rates charged, and the amount of time spent on this job.
