The rare joy of Swedish football

1341

I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate.  Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.

I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.

I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca.  The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties.  The neutrals were disappointed.  Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again).  Heady days for both.  I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.

There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits.  Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams.  The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).

Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….

Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

Some on the nightshift appeared a bit nervous about tonight.

These night hawks are a different breed- they are a cautious bunch.

I’m not so fearful: 3-0 Celtic.

wonkyradar – I see no reason to believe Scotland would become a freer society if the separatists are successful in breaking up the United Kingdom.

They are already doing everything they can within their current limited powers to stick two fingers up to the people who pay their wages. (thumbsup)

Maybe someone can organise a wee EBT for them all.

Alternatively,we can tell them all to eff off, they cannae run a menage, the only club run sensibly in the whole country holds all the cards, and any attempt at change will be met with a demand for individually-negotiated broadcasting rights.

I know where that is roughly. I live in Partizanske which is close to Nitra/Topolcany.

  6. The team need to be strong tonight and we, the support, need to be strong and patient.

If we concede a goal no panic.

If we score first we also need to recognise that nothing has changed. They would still require 3 goals to win the tie.

I’ll be setting off for the game shortly, optimistic, expectant but a tad nervous.

    Fingers crossed.

  15. A Lisburn council motion to grant the Orange Order the freedom of the city has cleared its first hurdle.

The council agreed on Tuesday to pass the DUP proposal to the committee stage, despite opposition from Sinn Fein and the Alliance Party.

It will go through equality screening, for assessment on whether it has the potential to impact differently and unfairly on various groups.

The motion was proposed by Paul Givan, a DUP councillor and assembly member.

Waiting for this game reminds me of the unexpected feeling I encountered last week when Commons put us one up. The seconds are on average 6 times slower when you want something to happen, or time to fly by, FFS it’s taken nearly a month and a half for the last week to pass!

As much as I would like the time to pass quicker, I aint willing it too much, lest the fairy of ironic retribution waves her wand and makes them score in the first minute causing 89 mins to pass in only 10.

Has anyone checked to see if there is a pile of Rangers News and Milk Bottles outside Chic Young’s House by the way?

It is open to the public!

It is £12.75 per 9 hole round. Not sure for 18.

The layout is not bad, but the greens are superb! They remind me of the Old Course at St Andrews. No such thing as a straight putt.

Three par threes are all in to the wind, the par fours are short but tricky, water, dog legs and lots of bunkers. The third is a long par 5, about 540 yards.

The well known Celtic supporter and pro golfer Stephen Gallagher was involved in the design.

    Well worth a visit!

Only downside is they do not have a drinks licence!
