Those moving on in the summer

1021

I’ve always cautioned against judging a player who has been out for an extended period but being hooked at halftime last night looks like an ominous sign for Derk Boerrigter, who sparkled for 30 minutes on his debut against Ross County earlier in the season but has come nowhere close to that form since.

Injuries stopped him in his tracks that day against County, and several times since, but whatever the reason, we’ve not seen anything like what the player is capable of, and at 27, he is likely to be looking for first team action elsewhere next season.

After last night’s game Neil Lennon spoke of the possibility of signing and losing players over the summer transfer window, which starts in three weeks.  Buying well is crucial, and Celtic didn’t do that last summer, but getting those ‘no longer in the manager’s plans’ off the books as early as possible is also important.

Last August we offloaded Lassad, probably by parting with a bundle of cash in the process.  This is not a precedent Celtic will have been keen to set, but it’s better to have the decks cleared than have an unproductive player linger around for a year.

Anyone starting less than a third of the games he is available for selection should be looking for pastures new, especially with new arrivals expected this summer.

“Have to say. St Johnstone’s 3rd goal was an absolute peach and they deserve al credit. O’Halloran starting great from the throwin, creating space for Hasselbaink by cutting inside before splaying it back out for him to reach the line where he holds it up wonderfully, cuts it back to Wotherspoon who fires in a wonderful cross to the waiting O’Halloran to finish with his head. Great team goal an absolute joy to watch.”

Question time tonight is a frightening vision of the future. I’m sure Scotland would be at the heart of the ethnic cleansing.

A mate has just pointed out – there’s a guy on the panel tonight who has been on there 15 times over the last few years and whose party has NEVER had a single MP in parliament. I’ve no idea why Nigel Farage gets this kind of opportunity. But he does.

Michael was on Celtic s books when he was younger. Went to Bolton but didn’t make it there.

His dad is on coaching staff at celtic park.

I thought he played really well last night both in his striking and link up play.

  8. The Bhoys are on the hunt for a cheap striker this summer and the in-form St Johnstone man represents a low-cost gamble for Neil Lennon and Celtic.

The long hot summer months may be fast approaching but for Hoops manager Neil Lennon, the commencement of the post-season break will also signal the start of a long and potentially arduous search for a new striker.

Keen to maintain their grip on the Scottish Premiership whilst making progress in the Champions League, the Northern Irishman’s plans for next term have already been hindered by Georgios Samaras’ decision to leave the club on a free.

While the lack of transfer fee is undoubtedly damaging for a club keen to recoup on any outgoing player, the loss of the talismanic forward makes it a double blow for the Bhoys’ plans.

After all, it takes a special kind of player to find the net regularly in Scotland and while Amido Balde offers promise for the future and question marks remain over Teemu Pukki, the reality is that Celtic have struggled to find a replacement for Gary Hooper.

Little wonder then that Lennon has expressed interest in bringing the Norwich flop back to the club, as expressed in an interview where the Hoops manager set his stall out for the summer ahead.

Quizzed on his transfer priorities for Celtic, the 42-year-old was brief in his response: “Centre- forward. Everyone is looking for one of them.”

And when pushed on a potential move for the Canaries man, Lennon was similarly downbeat.

“I’d imagine the Hooper thing would rumble on but whether we could tempt him back or not I don’t know,” he said.

But while any move for the former Scunthorpe United star is likely to prove expensive, one cut-price alternative who is likely to be available for a quarter of the fee and offers bags of potential is Stevie May.

Named as the Scottish Football Writers’ Association young player of the year this week, the 21-year-old has been the undoubted star of the show for St Johnstone, scoring 27 goals for the Perth club as part of a campaign in which he has caught the eye of many.

Much of May’s success comes down to his gradual and ultimately successful integration into the first-team, a process that began with a loan spell at Alloa Athletic where he managed a sensational 19 goals in 22 games.

A subsequent season with Hamilton Academical further cemented his reputation as a star in the making, with May scoring 25 goals in 33 appearances for the Accies.

And despite coming off after just 45 minutes of St Johnstone’s 3-3 thriller with Celtic in midweek, the forward is one option Lennon should definitely consider.

Skilful and pacey in equal measure, a strict summer workout regime has seen the striker add strength to his repertoire.

And while someway short of Samaras in stature, this new addition to his game makes him the ideal target man, and a forward capable of holding up play and bringing others into the action.

May is currently tied to the club until the summer of 2015, but should Celtic come calling with an offer for the forward, then St Johnstone may be forced into a move, rather than lose the striker on a free in a year’s time.

For now though, Lennon and Celtic fans have another reason to tune into the Scottish Cup Final between the Saints and opponents Dundee United.

  9. CowieBhoy, you missed a good night.

I was very impressed by the boy Mays scoring record.Fantastic return for games played. At the money, could he be worth a punt?.Seems to be improving season by season.Has he got the potential to go further?.Could we miss out on a future star?.I have to say, from what I have witnessed,I like this guy.

  13. Would love to see some more young Scots blood being brought in but only if they are given the opportunity to shine. At least these youngsters Michael O’Halloron and Stevie May and are getting SPL game time at St Johnstone.

That’s what’s being seriously suggested in some quarters! Celtic fans used to be slated in the media for being “paranoid” whenever anyone raised the possibility of a dodgy refereeing decision. But if you look at some of the lunacy that Sevcovians are posting day-in, day-out, it’s amazing.

What do u think of this?

I like the look of May. His goals against Aberdeen were quality at any level.

No question that I would prefer a proven top level striker. However, what I really do not want to see is yet another last minute scattergun search for any striker with an underwhelming signing at the end.

If the budget means that we are not going to go for a £5m type guy, I see no point in risking money (maybe £2m) on a dud at the end of the window.

I’d rather the club take their chance now on a proven SPL scorer now like May- say for £1m- bed him in and, if we do strike lucky later in the window and get a good loan signing or an unexpected decent £2-3m player in addition, then great.

    Just thinkin….

After last nights game I finally have to agree that big Amido needs a new job. He’s never going to be good enough in a Celtic jersey. I was on the fence and of the opinion that I’d not seen enough of him but good luck to the big guy with his next club. Likewise with DB. I wish them both all the best in their new career’s. Get them both out the door ASAP.

Myself and two brothers from Toryglen called Jim & Phil Young were trying to get a band together about 1969. We practiced in the hall at the bottom of the hill, near the river. Afterwards we went to a pub up the street on the left, and Phil Young got battered in the toilets. We rescued him and ran for it, made our getaway in a Commer diesel van.

My only visit to Carmyle. Knew a guy from school called Colin Weir from there though.

Dexter, I’d love to see Stevie May in a Celtic shirt. 27 goals this season for St J? How many would he have scored with our midfield supplying?

He’s young, he’s hungry, he wants to make his mark and he knows where the net is. I’d rather we bought him than wasted money bringing back Gary Hooper.

    And he’s Scottish.
