Time for Celtic to box clever

806

Salzburg got back to winning ways on Sunday after losing 4-1 away to third-placed Rheindorf Altach immediately before the international break.  The stats from that game are interesting.  Salzburg enjoyed 60% possession but Rheindorf forced 66% more chances by playing on the break, scoring twice in the closing 10 minutes as Salzburg pushed for an equaliser.

A point on Thursday would be an acceptable result for Salzburg so they could be caught between trying to defend and playing their normal game.  Either way it’s likely they will hold possession for long periods.

No team is completely dependent on one player but this truism is probably tested more by Salzburg and their talismanic striker, Jonathan Soriano, who has scored 26 times in 27 outings this season.  Consider for a moment if we had such a prodigious striker………..

Salzburg coach Adolf Hutter must decide how far tp change his usual game plan.  Salzburg’s entire strategy is to attack.  They have scored 50 league goals already this season, twice as many as any other team, while their goals against record is within a handful of the majority of teams in the league.

My preference would be to tempt them out, have them fall between the two stools of playing their natural offensive game and the more cautious approach they may be tempted to play away in Europe.  One note of caution, the Ajax team who beat Celtic comfortably in Amsterdam last season were shredded 0-3 by a counter-attacking Salzburg in the same venue a few months later.

Ajax failed to box clever, we can be smarter.  Stop Soriano, closed-down space at the back and play on the counter.

  1. Morning all.

Looks promising down here. We might be in for a good day.

Might we be in for a good January Window, if Agguero’s (sp?) performance last night means we get to sign John Guidetti?

Anybody know if compliance officer looking at the comments made by a rangers player that the entire hearts team were cheating at the weekend? Or if he is looking at the 2 ridiculous dives by rangers players in the game considering both worse than the dive that got a celtic player a 3 game ban this season?

Or do the sfa still feel that they have been punished enough?

Richie #TeamOscar – sorry I missed your question about Paul George last night.

I thought he was trying too hard – he clearly has “got it” but I wonder if the injury has affected his confidence in a funny way i.e. he feels he has to play the Hollywood ball in order to get noticed. He could do with a Paul Lambert type of player beside him just to reassure him.

I also thought the Everton no 4. – Liam Walsh – looked a future star.

    Good Morning,

29th September 1982 — and I was in Rome showing off to the then girlfriend about how I knew Rome like the back of my hand and that if you wanted shown around the Eternal city then I was yer man.

Of course she wanted to see the Pope, so we got up on Sunday morning, wandered down to St Peter’s Square to see the new JP2 deliver his noon blessing. Except when we got to the square there was no crowd and no Pope!

Was he on holiday? Had he gone out to Castel Gondolfo where he has a house?

    No!

The bloody clocks had changed and it was 1pm!

I had made an arse of it.

As many will testify, I am rubbish with time.

The clock on my car is permanently fast, and at certain times of year I have it sitting at an hour in advance just to make sure I can get somewhere in a reasonable time.

Anyway the Girlfriend’s disappointment was sorted out when I managed to blag our way into a wee private mass for 600 with JP2 later in the week but that is another story.

However, of equal importance was the question of Wednesday — the return leg against Ajax of Amsterdam with whom we had drawn 2-2 at home a fortnight before.

The game was due to kick of at quarter past eight and we looked about for a pub to watch it in.

There was just no joy and despite our best attempts we could find nowhere showing the game which had started by this time.

    Suddenly, a brain wave!

“Let’s go out to Scots College!” says I ” The Priests will have it on the telly!”

So we jump in a taxi and head out to Scots College which is on the outskirts of Rome. I had been there before and the girlfriend ( niece of the late Matt Lynch no less ) knew someone out there too.

After an age the taxi arrives at the door, we pay the fare and run up to the front door and ring the bell.

When the door is opened by a young fella we ask for Father Woodford or someone else ( can’t remember the name ) and eventually someone we knew came to the door.

” Sorry Father, but can we come in and watch the Celtic game please?”

    “Eh?”

” Can we come in and watch the Celtic game?”

    ” Eh — no you can’t”

    “Oh!”

” You can’t watch it — because it is finished!”

    ” What?”

” It finished about half an hour ago!”

Basically, I had got the time wrong again and had made a complete arse of it!

” However” says the priest ” I have some good news for you — we won! 2-1 and big George McCluskey scored in the dying minutes with his left foot!”

Queue instant celebrations on the doorstep but a bit of disbelief about George ever using his left foot!

Eventually we came inside. Have you ever seen the common room of a seminary full of drunk members of the clergy and drunk students hoping to become members of the clergy?

Before the game I had been afraid of the ageing but wondrous Cruyff, Molby, Lerby, Kieft and the really tricky Dane Jesper Olsen.

But they should have been worried about Charlie Nick who scored a great goal before they pulled one back ( one for big Packie to forget as I recall ) — Murdo, Maestro, McGarvey, Danny, Davie Moyes, Tam McAdam and even Graham Sinclair.

Beating Ajax in Amsterdam — bloody hell — even if we did miss it.

The mass with the Pope was a strange affair — you had to fight off nuns who beat you with umbrellas and stools just to get in — but it was a unique experience.

I eventually introduced the girlfriend to her future husband and we remain great friends.

I will remind her of this story on Saturday………….

  16. BBC Complaints have got back in touch again re the complaint at their use on the national BBC news on Saturday 1st November of the word DEMOTION, relating to Rangers. You will recall that they said that Rangers were demoted to Division 3 after financial problems.

They initially answered a different question in their reply which they were told was unacceptable. So we tried again and asked them to explain how they were demoted and if they could not do so explain why the national news is telling this lie.

The BBC now cannot confirm, when challenged on the point, how Rangers were demoted and as a result have directed the complaint to their Trust.

I spent yesterday morning delivering some books and parcels to folks who live in some old haunts — Dumbarton, Old Kilpatrick, Bowling, Clydebank ( Mountblow ) — it was really nice to take an hour out and see some old familiar places.

This morning it is the turn of another few old haunts — Paisley, Renfrew, Barrhead, Newlands, Newton Mearns, Clarkston and maybe — just maybe — a trip over to East Kilbride.

Blantyre Tim tells me your out in Lanzarotte

Yes, Ha’penny Inn is closed down mate.

That’s what happened to me in Sept. I met one of the guitarist/ singers playing in another bar and he did confirm that it was now closed but never offered much more info.

There are other bars in the same complex in old town, which may show the game, but my preference would be the Bohdran bar or the Spinnaker just up the hill from the Bhodran bar, both Irish owned and Celtic friendly. The bhohdran bar is near the front just past the Centrico Atlantico nightlife area. Easy walk from the old town.

Another option would be the Irish bar in Matagorda (in the complex of bars and restuarants), a bit further out towards the airport but it depends on where you’re staying.

Have to say the hearts manager has really impressed me in the way he’s handled everything about their own ambitions and their meetings with Sevco.

He always downplays hearts achievements and is generous to the sevco opposition.

Mr Neilson is a very clever chappie. He said the outcome would have been different had TRIFC not had a man sent off. Think about it…he didn’t say they would lose. Similarly “leaving their legs in” is good advice for inexperienced players but it is a deflection…he is not going to play the media game of stoking up supposed Ibrox persecution.

What is said publicly is not necessarily what’s said indoors!

As I said a very clever chappie….keep your eyes on him.

I agree. I think Neilson has come across very well. Talks well and can clearly manage. I wonder if he had the role last season would they have stayed up? Not convinced Gary Locke was a manager. A coach? Maybe but not a manager.

Neilson has done more in 6 months than Swally has done in 4 years and all the background mayhem does not cloud the fact that he has blew that job, plenty cash and not given young players a chance.

  24. Vmhan, Sorry to hear the Ha’penny is closed down, I spend a couple of weeks in Lanzarote every January and relished my visits to the Ha’penny. As you said, there is an Irish Bar on the ground floor of that complex, I think its called The Brendan Behan. It specialises in showing football games, on a Saturday they have about ten televisions showing 10 different games simultaneously. The game will definitely be on there but I would concur The Bodhrán or the Celtic Pub in the Matagorda complex have a better buzz about them. There will be a great craic in the Bodhrán after match with Johnny Crowley, not a Reb session or anything like that but a good craic all the same.

  25. justafan,

Neilston is obviously a good manager. I was wondering if his comments after Saturday were influenced by thoughts that he might be the next manager in Govan. He would be a lot better than the current incumbent.

  30. DJBEE, I was in Stockholm a couple of years ago and was amazed at the number of “Irish” Pubs around. I had no problem at all watching the big GAA games there, I feel sure those Pubs would also show Celtic Game. Can’t remember names or locations but they were very central in the vicinity of the main City centre pedestrian area.
