Time for Celtic to box clever

806

Salzburg got back to winning ways on Sunday after losing 4-1 away to third-placed Rheindorf Altach immediately before the international break.  The stats from that game are interesting.  Salzburg enjoyed 60% possession but Rheindorf forced 66% more chances by playing on the break, scoring twice in the closing 10 minutes as Salzburg pushed for an equaliser.

A point on Thursday would be an acceptable result for Salzburg so they could be caught between trying to defend and playing their normal game.  Either way it’s likely they will hold possession for long periods.

No team is completely dependent on one player but this truism is probably tested more by Salzburg and their talismanic striker, Jonathan Soriano, who has scored 26 times in 27 outings this season.  Consider for a moment if we had such a prodigious striker………..

Salzburg coach Adolf Hutter must decide how far tp change his usual game plan.  Salzburg’s entire strategy is to attack.  They have scored 50 league goals already this season, twice as many as any other team, while their goals against record is within a handful of the majority of teams in the league.

My preference would be to tempt them out, have them fall between the two stools of playing their natural offensive game and the more cautious approach they may be tempted to play away in Europe.  One note of caution, the Ajax team who beat Celtic comfortably in Amsterdam last season were shredded 0-3 by a counter-attacking Salzburg in the same venue a few months later.

Ajax failed to box clever, we can be smarter.  Stop Soriano, closed-down space at the back and play on the counter.

  3. I know its mad early but I’ve just put the finishing touches to my travel bag. Airport Parking Voucher, Passport, Bank Card, small bit of sterling left from last trip, Celtic cap with CQN badge, Scarf, my mate has the Airline & match tickets. A change of clothes, think that’s it but I’ll do a re-check later to see if I’m forgetting anything. Just got a wee bit of a tremble of anticipation doing it, I know 66 year old grandfathers shouldn’t be acting like this but what the hell do I care.

  5. Sad news about bigTommy Gemmell.

Tommy scored in our 2 European Cup Finals.

But, a Sage Celtic supporter once told me that, Celtic used to get booted off the pitch v’s the huns and, even in Mr Stein’s 1st game against them, we were booted off the pitch and, it was said in some quarters that Mr Sein vowed – “…that wont happen again!”

So, in the words of the sage…Mr Stein brought in 2 big strapping Scoattish protestants, Gemmell and Young and, Mr Stein’s Celtic weren’t – booted off the pitch by the huns again.

That little tale has convinced me that Tommy Gemmell is Celtic’s greatest ‘ever’ player.

This is not an emotional post, but, a returned verdict from the jury in Kev’s Jungle.

I see Aston Villa getting a bit of stick about the size of the crowd for their last home match, lowest attendance for a long time at Villa Park for a league match, about ~25000.

  10. I was flicking through the youtube link posted yesterday by Davidopoulos, the 1-1 draw with Oldco from 4/1/95 and it got me thinking again about the whole Tommy Burns era. Celtic played the huns off the park in the second half. The goal that Paul Byrne scored was fantastic and the build up play from John Collins, was so typical of the guy. Beside him in midfield was the Maestro and Phil O’ Donnell. We had some brilliant players, who were celtic to the core. We were a bit light weight up front with Andy Walker and wee McLaughlin but within a few months, we had added guys like Andy Thom, Big Pierre and Jorge Cadette.

I remember some exquisite football been played by the hoops during this era, I just can’t understand how we didn’t achieve more success with this team.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a midfield such as the late Phil O’ Donnell, the Maestro and JC lining up to face RBS tomorrow night?

I think we have a good chance of picking up all three points on Thursday night at home, they are not a bad team, but they are not that mutch better than us IMO, no use looking back and saying what could have happened, what’s done canny be undone, onwards and upwards lads, 2-0 celtic.

What I would do….park the bus and use the magnificent James Forrest as an out ball.

We’re not good or, big enough to swagger onto the pitch like Neil had us do at home and, away to Juventus.

Cagey / Shrewdy / Street-wise is the way to go.

Good luck – Off oot – bye.

  13. Yesterday evening about 7:00, I stumbled across an article in the DR and was stunned to see this quote from Regan and decided that it was worth sharing on here:

“We would all like to see Rangers back to their winning ways as quickly as possible and to improve their financial position in order to bring more money to the game of football in Scotland.”

This morning I watched the clip on STV and the portion about “winning ways” doesn’t feature. I now notice that the DR article has been edited to read:

“We would all like to see Rangers improve their financial position in order to bring money to the game of football in Scotland.”

It would seem that I was misled (duped?) and I apologize if I have in turn misled anyone on here.

I don’t understand, though, why the DR published a “quote” from Stewart Regan then edited it later…

I remember a few years back going over with my nephew to see us play the Deid team. Left it to last minute and forgot my Passport. Sitting on bus from Car Park to Airport when I realised I hadn’t the Passport. Jumped out of bus ran back to Car and by the grace of God discovered Mrs. corkcelt had a couple of weeks previous put my Driving Licence in glove compartment. Since then I always pack early and check things 4 or 5 times over next few hours.
