Time for Paddy, Emilio and Kelvin

808

Tomorrow Celtic have a Scottish Cup tie away to Peterhead, currently second bottom of the Third Division.  Peterhead have recorded their only two home wins of the season in the last two weeks, so Celtic’s scouts will have seen them at their best, but the break from league action will allow Neil Lennon to rest players who have been carrying niggling injuries, including James Forrest, whose terrific form could be jeopardised by the stresses of carrying such a prominent responsibility for Celtic.

The game in Peterhead will also give fringe players an opportunity to shine.  I suspect Paddy McCourt is still carrying the can for hitting the post against St Johnstone in August, the day it all started to go wrong.  We’ve missed him.  Emilio Izaguirre and Kelvin Wilson would also benefit from 90 minutes football as the squad reassembles itself, although the game might come too soon for Kris Commons.

News that Beram Kayal’s injury is likely to keep him out of action for four months was sickening.  This is the third serious injury Beram has suffered since joining Celtic 18 months ago.  I read a bit about grade 3 eversion ankle sprains yesterday.  He’ll need the best treatment and recuperation in the days and months to come.

I agree with both those points of view and will come back to both those points in a dedicated post as I think both are really important not only from a financial point of view but also from the standpoint of Celtic being a social club as well as a football team!

The triangle– which should progress given the Commonwealth Games developments round about— roads, parking, access etc– will make a big difference to the match day experience.

After the AGM, myself, BJ Mac, Auldheid and a couple of others stood about in the rain having a gab for a bit. At one point I suggested that we go upstairs into the restaurant and grab a snadwich and a coffee or something for lunch while we continued our chat.

I was amazed to learn that there were no facilities open to allow us to do that.

I know we were only a few in number, but in the past when I have been working in the east end I have gone to Celtic Park for lunch and taken others there. On the day of the Rangers v PSV game, There were loads of Dutch fans out at Celtic park at the superstore. Had there been a cafe/bar etc Celtic would have taken loads of lunch orders as it was raining and the visitors were clearly interested in the stadium, the club and has a lot of time on their hands before the game that evening.

I realise that there is a money constraint on both the club and the fans, but if you provide a service or an attraction of interest it will get used and generate income.

    Just my opinion of course.

    Right, time for some sleep.

Perhaps more access to the bars within the stadium (not sure what the legal situation is there). A lot of fans go to pubs before and after the game anyway. Or more access to the restaurants, for instance you could go to the game and then book a table right after the game.

What about facilities for young children during the game, and the parents could watch the game and collect the children afterwards. Or having areas for the latest computer technology for kids, so that families come in earlier, spend a bit of time (money) there and then watch the game.

    Some interesting points there Dan.

Firstly, it is illegal to sell alcohol in Football stadia in Scotland, other than in enclosed areas like restaurants and club membership locations. It would take a change in the law before Celtic could provide such a facility, although I believe it is time for the law to be changed in that respect. The law was introduced in the aftermath of the 1980 Cup Final riot, but this is the 21st century. We live in the world of all-seated stadia.

As for areas for computers for kids, the second that is introduced, the board would be accused of thinking up more schemes to fleece the supporters of their hard-earned cash.

    Re-EPL rights for Sky.

By no means is it a done deal that Sky will get the same rights they’ve been taking for granted for years.

ESPN want more of the the second tier games, but for the main packages Al Jazeera and Google are now interested in taking them.

A draw would delay a win bonus as well, cannae see it though.

What will happen is they will play some reserve player (against 2nd division opposition), who will have a no bad game, and then all we’ll have in the MSM for the next few weeks is how wonderul this new wonderkind is, and will someone please buy him. (remember danny wilson – £2m to liverpool and currently plying his trade in the english championship).

Fair point about the legal aspect of the bars. But as others have suggested, have bars around the ground that are separate from the Stadium or as you have said push for a change in the law.

Agree what you say in regards to accusations of the board trying to fleece supporters out of hard earned. However if the club engage with the fans in the correct manner and make things affordable, instead of taking the fans for granted, then I think these things are not insurmountable. Again getting the right professional people who can talk to the fans, because most of the good ideas I believe will come from the fans anyway. Although it’s not always possible to do all that is asked, I think a lot more that we currently have at present could be done.

Generally people will spend what they can afford, and the Celtic family I believe would rather be contributing it to the club than outside the club.

Loads of things can be done to improve the match day experience, not sure if the will is there at the moment within the board to do it. And that goes back to the mistrust fans have about getting fleeced.

  7. What us these bangura rumours

If it is rumour that we tried to find a bargain but have realized that 2.5m is down the drain and we can’t afford to buy a striker

    The rumour is true

Another example of lawells signing policy that actually costs us money in trying to find projects

The huns will have some no mark playing tomorrow, purely because they have no depth of squad. However, if fleck isn’t too hungover, it might be him, if not it will be someone else.

My point exactly. Not a Henrik, a Chris or a John (aye, ah know he is, but you know what I mean). But will get the goals, and if he isn’t scoring, the confusion he would cause in the box will give Hooper hunners of room to soak up the scrambled balls in the box.

I don’t think anybody thought Celtic were signing another Paul McStay when WGS signed Barry Robson. However, Barry found his niche (even or a short time) whilst at Celtic, and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t speak fondly of Barry.

Sometimes for every KOK or Maestro, a wee bit of pragmatic scottish ‘journeymen’ doesn’t go amiss.

  11. I think there are enough media sources who are willing to spread uninformed rumours about Celtic without our own supporters doing the same – unless anyone has evidence that Mo Bangura isn’t the age he claims to be, or they can prove that Celtic signed the ‘wrong’ person (‘a pal told me’, or ‘I know someone who knows someone who works at Lennoxtwon’ don’t count), then i would suggest that you keep your rumours to yourselves.

  12. the matchday, and any other day experience.

i was at Old Trafford last year during september on a non matchday monday.

    Drizzly, not warm day.

The place was not heaving, but, there were maybe about 300 people around the area. The museum & stadium tour were walk up and pay in the superstore events, leaving every half hour.

I just dint have enough time to do the tour so went looking for some food instead.

The red cafe was accessible from the big stand, by fast escalators, and gave a view of the pitch.

At the cafe, very reasonably priced, me and Mrs H had some lunch, but also there were maybe 20 other people, this was about 2pm. I recognised one baldy guy, with what llooked like press with him, only later making the connection that it was Arthur Albiston.

While sitting there, realised that the stadium tour actually came through the cafe at one point, giving the people another opportunity to buy something.

My point is this, some joined up thinking on facilities, layout, and easy access, might turn Celtic Park into a tourist. fan destinaton of choice.

Hopefully, this is whats going to happen with the Triangle development/

ps. i am sure as well there was a free bus to OT from the city centre. like the holiday park stuff you see abroad.

  13. pps, at the recent huns game i was up at the forge for 6pm, on route to meeting VMHAN to pick up the ticket, the place we were to meet was the fiveways pub, but i couldnt find the man, and on the night the phone reception was just not working.

but between parking the car, and walking to the five ways, there were hundreds of fans , mostly Irish and English in the pizza hut and kfc, and then again around springfield road, just taking whatever services were available.

Eating, drinking , and touring before the match should be available, on a grand scale, at Celtic Park.

Some excellent points there mate. Hope the triangle development is able to deliver some of these things. And also a chance for Celtic on non match days to bring in some income. Again there can be restaurant facilities at affordable prices as well, why not. Yes a museum perhaps, and why not a tourist attaction, Why not work with Visit Scotland? Ok might not be on the same scale as Barca, but it would be attractive to football fans from all over.

I feed any good ideas or concerns to the team working on the Membership Scheme.

The problem that I see is one of capacity in that the team members have other jobs as well.

Because every penny goes on the football side, there is not enough left over to increase non football development. Once a title is in the bag there might be a bit to spare on increasing capacity.

I heard something at the end of the AGM on the Membership scheme that suggests fleecing the support via it is not part of the thinking but have not been around lately to get detail.

I never thought I’d see the day.

Celtic cyberspace, including CQN, resorting to hunnish rumour-mongering about a Celtic player lying about his age and even his true identity, just to have yet another pop at Peter Lawwell.

Of course, he is a native of a ‘silly wee banana republic in west Africa’, and they’re all corrupt aren’t they. Silly me.

Would all this garbage have seen the light of day if Bangura had been banging the goals in every week? Of course not, except perhaps in Rangers cyberspace.

    Unconscious racism at its best.

We are only looking at back up and I think John even with half the talent of his big bro would do well for us. Hearts want rid of him…so would be a cheap proven SPL goal scorer.

  21. Gscbhoy. Celtic and lawell delayed and delayed in buying a striker

In the end due to incompetence at CEO level again we had a panic by on a untried player

    More money down the drain

Up front don’t waste money. See fortune, Murphy , bangura

If we had bought one player for 6-7 m we would be in the mess

Does not matter if bangura is 20,30 or 40. He is not a goalscorer
