Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

1158

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

Your Bari pal has excellent taste. Both great players.

I’m sure Tony Green was lined up for a move-from Blackpool?-by Big Jock prior to another injury. I think the one that ended his career.

As for Peter Beardsley,The Hoooooops were made for a player like him. My personal favourite non-Celt.

    Catach,

Thanks for the response to my lad’s article in the 42.ie yesterday.

Thankfully , the Celtic gene has passed to the next generation of my family.

    DBBIA,

Congratulations on the safe arrival of your next generation.

It is through our children and grandchildren that we gain immortality.

  8. FAVOURITE UNCLE on

RALPH Topping was once informed by a man from the Nevada Gaming Commission that he was the most boring man he had ever met. This was meant as a compliment, rather than an insult, as it was that blemish-free record which allowed him to wave through the application for William Hill’s first sports betting licence in the state.

But it was also an exaggeration. The man standing in front of him, after all, had built his way up from a Saturday job at a betting shop in Mount Florida – Sir Alex Ferguson was one of his occasional customers – to become chief executive of a global company with an annual turnover of £1.5bn. The Gambler, by Kenny Rogers, seems as appropriate a choice as any for his ringtone.

Brought up in Bathgate, Topping’s team is Hibs. If this connection was eventually consummated when David Gray lifted the William Hill Scottish Cup for the Easter Road club, this backstory was also responsible for his big break. Arriving in London for his interview in the mid 80s, he was forced first to prove his credentials by reciting the Famous Five then give his opinion on Graeme Souness’ classic mid-80s reintroduction to George McCluskey and the Scottish game. “It was classic atavistic behaviour,” he said, lifting directly from that day’s Scotsman. “You can take the man out Stenhouse, but you can’t take the Stenhouse out of the man.” His application form was ripped up there and then, and a cushy number found for him in personnel.

from todays HERALD……i posted on here before i worked with him at MECCA BOOKMAKERS.he told me me traveled on local huns supporters bus .they did not allow SINGING but played THE TAPES. 2 pals of mine used to get him tickets for EUROPEAN “HUNS” games when he was based in ENGLAND.you only have to look at his coupon when he was giving out medals for league cup at HAMPDEN to see what he is.

  10. Been reading but not had time to post.

Very difficult days for some which translate into sadness for us as Celtic Supporters. And yet there is joy as the memories are relived. I wasn’t in the UK at the time of our greatest team and greates accomplishments so those recounting their personal experiences gives me a fantastic education into what I missed.

And then there are those much closer to the CQN community which touch on many here personally.

I dare not mention each by name lest I offend any by omission.

One mention to Cowiebhoy – that’s a situation I found myself in with my Dad. I hope your mum has a speedy recovery. In my experience its the self-confidence which takes the longer to heal.

  14. Like many other CQNers I was deeply shocked when Malorbhoy informed me of Jim’s passing. I did’nt know him as long as some but his character an thoughtfullness shone through whenever we had a converation. His pride in his ghirls was there for all to see, also his love for his team. He had expressed a desire to visit Stornoway/Lewis andd we had tentavely discussed plans for avisit this year but unfortuneately his illness put on the backburner, he would have loved it and I would have loved showing him around, alas not to be. The wonderful tributes paid to Jim on the blog are testament to a fine human being, father and friend. RIP Jim it was a pleasure and honour knowing you. Hail Hail Hebcelt

Welcome to the Celtic family Patrick Joseph Neill.

Now that i’m all showered and sweat free and a wee hauf

in hand kids are down i can relax, went to the Avalon air

show today just outside Melbourne, plenty of hoops about

wee mhan spent his day asking them if they knew big Tommy

had died, amazing aircraft those F22 Raptors and the new F35′,s

when those things fly over you the earth certainly moves, in

fact quite a bit more than that moves if i was a wee soadjer in

the trenches and those things came screaming at me i would

    need a man nappy.

Paddymac and a lot of our CSC are off into St Kilda for the Paul

Larkin referee thingamijig which i would have loved but i’ve got

the weans, and as we all know they come first so i’m happy, wee

grace has had her march up and down the hall on my shoulders

singing Ail Ail the Celts are here, the wee mhans shattered and

now i’ll get the reb tunes on and sit and think what a lucky bar

steward you were Mick you watched Charlie Tully, the Lions with

Jinky, Bobby, Tommy, Ronnie, The Maestro, Tommy Burns, Henke

and now Brendans buccaneers from afar, and i don’t think i’m

finished yet i’m tipping another big cup because as i said i’m a

    lucky bar steward.
