The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.
“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”
Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.
Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.
This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.
For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.
He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness. If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.
I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

Some great tributes to and memories of Tommy Gemmell expressed over last couple of days. Well done Paul67 on some fantastic lead articles. It’s such a sad day when one of the Lions leaves us. I know it’s not the same as family, but for me it’s close. The 11 guys that wore the hoops that day will never be forgotten and I hate the fact that we are all getting old and having to bid them farewell. I hope its a good few years before we have to do this again.
R.I.P. Tommy.
Terrible news about ELDIEGOBHOY!
Met Jim a few times.
The first time was at the Toast to St John Doyle at the Beer Café.
The last was in the BV last year when he was battling illness.
He never complained and always asked after my family.
One the best and he will be sorely missed.
Prayers said for Kerri and Meghan.
Rest in peace Jim.
You’ll never walk alone.
Ach,….it’s a sad time on here just now.
Almost two years ago, l thought my number was up.
I got scared when the hospital called my home one day out of the blue to tell me that, the mushroom sized lump that they had removed from my bowel six months earlier was cancerous after having given me the all clear when they released me from hospital at the time.
When l feared the worst, l came onto CQN one day to say what l thought would be my goodbye’s to a place that l knew was magical, filled with special folk yet, lt was a place where l brought all of my, paranoia, conspiracy theories, etc….and, operated like a hun riding a bull in a China shop.
The delays from the hospital with the results of my tests that they had called me in for, only served to heighten the fears that the cancer had spread to my liver and lungs.
Not being person of faith – at that time – l asked if the blog would pray for my wife and son as, with the way things were looking, l thought that my time had come to be taken away from them.
I asked for prayers for my wife and son because, the fear in they’re eyes was hurting more than the thought of battling cancer, l’m sure EDB will know what l’m talking about, l say that EDB ‘will’ know because he’s still on these pages, just like he’s always been, just like he always will be. God Bless You Jim Devine.
If, this demon returns to me l will never let the blog know, it’s not right, l’m sorry for before.
Btw, when l came on and asked for prayers for my wife and son, little did l think that l would be blessed by a four week tsunami of CQN prayers for which l’ll be forever indebted, as l waited for the hospital results. Thank
You.
Paul 67 – Thanks for this week – YNWA.
ELDIEGOBHOY – Sleep In Peace My Friend.
TOMMY GEMMELL – Thank You, RlP Legend.

My thoughts are with the families and friends of those who have lost a loved one. I know your pain but can offer no words of faith to help you. I am not religious.
Be strong for those who need it most and never, ever be afraid to talk about someone you have lost no matter how many tears it may bring on.
Good morning CQN from a cool, clear and thankfully dry East Devon.
Morning CQN
Very sad news about EDB, met him at a few CQN do’s and was always great company,he loved his family and was very proud of his daughters.
A great loss to CQN and his family, heavens a better place with his passing.

Good morning friends from a heavy clouded grey and drizzly East Kilbride
Morning everyone, was looking to post last night but the wave of tributes to good people made me ashamed to post anything that would have looked trite. Or even , shite!
I never met EDB however he had a love of family, Celtic and Roxy Music which makes him 3 for 3 with me however and more to the point he was obviously a much loved person. RIP.
It’s cold and miserable in darkest Lanarkshire this morning, hopefully brighter things ahead for all of us.
I will leave the usual trivial stuff about gym and cooking till we are all in a better place.

I think Jim would be absolutely delighted at all the tributes paid to him on CQN since yesterday.
He really did love coming on here and giving his views and enjoyed the repartee with all you other CQN stalwarts.
After Moira died he took tremendous comfort from the support he received on here. Kerri and Meghan(see I got it right this time, Jim) also appreciated the kinds thoughts when their mum passed.
I’m sure that the ghirls will take time to catch up on all the condolences expressed, so thoughtfully and sensitively, over the last day. It will give them great comfort knowing how well their dad was thought of by the CQN community.
I’m not religious but in my little sojourns abroad, in the last year, I visited many beautiful churches and couldn’t resist lighting a candle for Jim and others every time.
I will miss his contributions on here and meeting him on the bus going to the game.
I’m sorry I never said goodbye.
Hail Hail, El Diego Bhoy.

Unlike the SFA, we always stick to our published rules ;-). So as long as you send your pick in befiore your chosen game kicks off then you’re OK.
However, if there are too many picks still awaited then it means I can’t yet issue the usual ‘who has picked whom’ message. Hopefully by the time I’m back from a likely wet and drookit ParkRun then most emails will be waiting on me.
You should join for the net one which we hope to start early April.
it’s been a pleasure reading this blog over the last few days.
