Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

1158

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

Hello again all you young rebels.

As many have already said, it’s been a tough week for the Celtic

family but it’s brought out the very best in CQN and the support

    as a whole.

Condolences to ELDIEGOBHOY’s family and friends he was a

great poster and a good man to have at your side according to

    those that knew him best.

    RIP JIM.

Somebody asked last week where there friends could watch the

stickies game as they were arriving in Melbourne and wanted to

see it, originally our CSC was not showing it but after speaking to

PADDYMACOZ they had so many requests and constant pressure

from the Grand Hotel manager to host us so we will be showing it

now, we normally have our gatherings in the Bay Hotel but it looks

like the Grand are green with envy at the takings on a Celtic day and

would like us to move there, but they would have to beat $ 7 a pint

and $ 5 a big glass of wine the Bay gives us, see what happens.

There is late night bus service from the city centre to Mornington

and the Grand Hotel is just up the road from the Bay Hotel in Main st.

or just sleep it off on the beach it’s warm enough :-))

Also i believe the Melbourne No1 csc has relocated to another pub

after the sale of their building i don’t know which one but i will find

    out if anyone is interested.

  7. Gooooood Morning CQN :-)

Had a wee laugh to myself there.

My wife is/was down south, and is on a train heading back up the road, anyway

She text me 15 mins ago

This train is full of Huns, already signing sons of hate, whilst drinking and their kids eat crisps for breakfast – zombies

    Made me laugh :-))

KevJ – you keep fighting Bhud, you and family are part of the Celtic community, and get back writing your thoughts on all that is Celtic

Ok, need to nip oot to my Auld Maw and Da’s now – my Auld maw had a bad fall yesterday, breaking her wrist, and fingers, plus badly smashing up herself face, with 6 stitches to a cut on one cheek, nipping oot to make them their breakfast

    Enjoy your day CQN

  8. Melbourne Mick

Hope you and family are all well Bhud :-)

Did you see me mention, Laura got engaged just after Valentine’s Day ?

If it’s ok, I’ll pass your email onto big An Tearmann, who was after the info for some friends visiting your Celtic world

I like wee stories like that.

A few years ago I spoke to two elderly well to do Inter fans in Germany. As soon as I mentioned Celtic they went into a spiel in surprisingly good English.

Lisbon was their third cup final trip and they admitted to underestimating Celtic but were amazed at the support they brought. They raved about the ‘midfielders, excellent’ (what’s that in Italian?)

I was filled with pride. It’s the same everywhere you go Europe, when you bump into real football fans old enough to remember our greatest day.

Fr Murphy was in tonight. I have not felt too bad today, although I notice the energy beginning to drain. But it is quite early yet. I got showered today and had my hair cut, which made me feel quite good. Ten years younger, the boys joke, but I feel twenty years older, the inevitable consequence of eight years of torture and imprisonment.

I am abreast with the news and view with utter disgust and anger the Reagan/Thatcher plot. It seems quite clear that they intend to counteract Russian expansionism with imperialist expansionism, to protect their vital interests they say.

What they mean is they covet other nations’ resources. They want to steal what they haven’t got and to do so (as the future may unfortunately prove) they will murder oppressed people and deny them their sovereignty as nations. No doubt Mr Haughey will toe the line in Ireland when Thatcher so demands.

Noticed a rarity today: jam with the tea, and by the way the Screws are glaring at the food. They seem more in need of it than my good self.
