Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

1158

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

DBBIA…..congrats, giving us all a wee lift in what has been

    a sad week.

  3. As the Cup is now the big one, do we field our strongest side on Sunday or do we give Gamboa, Izaguirre and Griffiths a start?

Congrats to DBBIA and welcome to Patrick.

A big get well soon to Cowiebhoy’s auld maw!

Marakesh Express — interesting story re your two well to do Inter fans as there were not too many of them in Lisbon in 1967 and that is significant for a whole host of resons.

Life is really tough for me at the moment, I am holed up at the Fairmont Hotel in St Andrews after a very pleasant stay here last night with a fabulous dinner.

When I leave I have to drag my old bones down into town and then on out to the Eden Mill distillery where I will hopefully catch up with Burnley 78 for a natter and a sample.

Then, I have a hectic schedule which sees me being forced to wander aimlessly at a leisurely pace around wherever I choose to go in Fife before heading to the award winning McTaggarts Deli and Bistro in Aberdour where Taggsybhoy says a pint awaits at half past five — he is currently out for lunch and going to watch the Pars with wee Joe!

I am not sure I am up to all this mad running about in a carefree fashion. I am used to stress, endless phonecalls, deadlines, people buggering things up and needing pulled out the fire and all that stuff.

    Life is tough …………..

  8. The introduction to Superscoreboard there was interesting. I paraphrase “…we’ll be covering the league game between managereless Kilmarnock and managerless Motherwell…and we’ll be at Ibrox doe the Scottish Cup quater final between managerless Rangers and Hamilton…”

It’s difficult to believe that EDB is gone.

The last time I seen him he looked to be in fine fettle – it was only after reading CelticQuickNews days later I learned he was battling an illness.

A proper Celtic gentlemen if ever there was one.

Condolences from Beal Feirste to his family and his many great friends on here.

    RIP EDB.

Thank you. The old silk scarves were my favourites so I will pop in pre-St Mirren game and see how these compare. They certainly look good on the GB site.

    Cheerio for now,

Congrats to DBBIA. My grandson was born last week in Detroit. John Patrick Joseph McGuire, I hope you have a great life- and see us lifting the big cup again.

  19. Just put all the ingredients in the pot and hope they bring about a lovely Vietnamese clear broth or Pho, in a couple of hours. I have two lovely sea bass ready to be added, if the Pho is up to scratch, or they will be pan fried instead.

The tension of cooking something for the first time fairly takes your mind off other more important matters.

That was just to show I am back to posting shite again, and I was at the gym as well. HH
