Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

Snivelling Neville made to eat his words from earlier in the match when he slagged the holy goalie saying his save against manure was his only penalty save, curse of the clown commentator

Two poor, poor teams. Only difference is that one has the referee on their side.

From what you posted straight red, it was as if he was lining up to take the shot, absolutely disgraceful. We should not be surprised though.

As God is my witness, the MIB will stop us from winning the treble, them and only them will stop us.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

If we think this is bad just wait and see what we get if we’re drawn against them.

Remember it was the mib who prevented Ronny from winning the treble in cup semi

They have done it in the nit so distant past

  10. Must admit the pop ups have been a pain that I could live with on this glorious site, but by feck the LG ones are really testing my patience.

The monkeys getting the usual favours…no surprise there!

  11. The scoreline will probably deflect from a proper analysis of the refs performance but you give 3 or 4 terrible decisions all in favour of the one team and you break their spirit.

Beaton wasn’t bad today he cheated plain & simple, he had a vested interest into which team made the semi final & made sure in happened.

  12. Think Hamilton s heads went after all those outrageous decisions. They tried to play a bit in 1st half, Beaton put a stop to that.

The SFA are going to bring in the guys who gave out the envelopes at the Oscars last week as fast tracked refs

The cheating is so blatant now they are brazen about it

I’m actually glad in a way they have won easily, let them think they are good. Next Sunday will be their day of reckoning.

No sarcasm, the authorities are doing a great job.

I mean, look at Dundee United last season. They had an 18-year old and 17 year old on the subs’ bench in a fixture against ICT. The younger one came on, the other was unused. However, they had been out on loan and, crucially, you can’t turn out for your parent club if you return from a loan spell with a lower league club after 31st March.

Both were then ineligible, and, as this had given United a huge sporting advantage in the win over ICT, and over every club in the top tier, they were deducted 3 points and fined, quite rightly!

Scottish Football Gverning bodies will not put up with anything that threatens the purity of the sport, especially if a club plays improperly registered players. However, they are not automatons, they know there is a human element, so if a club plays someone who is only imperfectly registered, because they, for example, have a deliberately concealed side-contract or something, they are prepared to be flexible with their sanctions, maybe just imposing a fine, and leave the points as they are, while still safeguarding that precious, almost sacred, Sporting Integrity, of course.

“I can’t talk for a period before 2009 when I arrived but the people who have been running the league since 1998 – a number of them are still here now – understand, just as I do, the importance of being absolutely neutral, absolutely unbiased and treating everybody equally.” Neil Doncaster, April 2012.

We all know that is why we have got several soft decisions in the league this season. Come the day they screw us over in the cup (for the third year running) the media media wiil use all those examples from the league to prove their dysfunctional theory.
