Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

1158

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

  1. We are on a great run of both form and results. We should also be always looking to improve. I have missed watching Rogic – I showed in an earlier article he is the most effective Number 10 we have – http://wp.me/p8p6sl-3x. Certainly in domestic games having an attacking midfielder close to the lone striker adds to the attacking threat – we don’t need 2 defensive midfielders. Henderson showed promise in flashes, but now Armstrong is back but he is more effective playing an orthodox MC role, coming into the box from deep or bringing the ball forward at pace from midfield.

I therefore looked to see whether there was a “Rogic Effect”. Safe to say the data did not support my hypotheses in the way I anticipated and I hope you enjoy/comment. http://wp.me/p8p6sl-42

Everyone’s getting too cocky about next weeks game. We still have to earn the right to beat them.

I was speaking to a drunk Hun, who knows a guy that saw Walters Myth in a taxi once, and he says the Hun players will all be wearing hover boots next week. And they are being allowed to make an emergency signing of some guy called Casino, who is worth more than £300m, and Walters Myth is helpin’ Graeme Murty, who is actually a better coach than Brendan. And they are the peepil.

    You have been warned ;)

    Fan-a Tic, BSR,

My musing was based on injury concerns to Forrest/ Roberts, not replacing Lustig.

Even though Mc.Kay is a O T P, his trick is to get by defenders and attack the box.

He is bound to have some law of average of getting a pay off!

For me, Gamboa offers pace and penetration both going forward and defending.

    BSR,

Thanks for the kind words over Tom’s article.

That’s at least three that read the link I put up!!

I think Gamboa in front of Lustig is a European game type of defensive option, not for Celtic at home to anyone.

Good shout, but it won’t happen because we’ll be preoccupied with our game which is offense, and how we’ll win, and how well.

    Many thanks.

It’s impossible to know who, if anyone reads any of our posts, unless there is a direct reply.

  8. For what it’s worth. All unbeaten records come to an end and I would take a gubbing next week if i was sure we would return the compliment in the cup.

  9. If you need a laugh, read Richard Wilsons report on the Beeb website on today’s events at Ipox.

I am pretty sure he would have had to adjust his trousers after pressing the send button.

Such praise being lavished and simple matters being avoided.

  10. Contemplating on another day of thuggery and cheating my mind went back tae a young Whitecrook lad that signed for them, by all accounts he was a quiet boy.

After one of his early games he came off the park at the half complaining about being kicked by the opposition to his manager, the alleged response was “kick them effin back”.

It is now surmised that the untalented player and manager (outwith the confines of ludge ibrox 1690) is now mentoring murky. That is fairly evident giving the criminality that occurred in the early game today.

Mark my words they will be well fired up next Sunday and IMHO Moussa, SS and Broonie will be targeted. We’ll be lucky tae finish the game with 11 fit players on the park.

Congratulations to the DBBIA family on their new addition.

  14. Beaton just earned his team around a million quid today, which will mean staving off admin until the split at least.

He knew what he was doing. Pathetic, soulless, subservient weakling. Knows his place in Dallas’ coven.

Fecking Imbeciles like him don’t realise the laughing stock they make out of Scottish football – the Garner assault will be played globally for years to come; it’s okay to blooter somebody if you smile, so you’ll avoid a red?

Watch the skillful youth of world football flock here to progress their game…

Brendan will never start with Gamboa in front of Lustig. The right winger has an essential part to play in the high press system we use. I noticed GMS made a decent fist of it the other night.

Your in bad company, I had West Brom, my first zero of the GFS, even worse AoW got 3, if he beats me I will never live it down :-)

  17. Just read back a couple if pages and see there is some angst regarding some cheating that went on at the Hunnery.

This is what we all signed up to. Why would anyone ever expect it to be different?

Keep on keeping on and dinnae worry about the cheating for now. A day will come again when it will matter but even then? Yip it’s what we signed up for while our club helped facilitate their metamorphisis in favour of the blue pound.

    It is what it is!

You should have hunted that Priory mob from the PV, originally the stag doo was meant to be at Cheltenham but most of the punters going would have ended up with no money to buy a round…

we met in our social club back of 4pm that day and I think he bet the last two winners so he should have no complaints

  24. Today’s result for them is a great result for us. They will be on cloud 1690 while any suggestion of us taking them lightly will have been kicked intae touch. Not that I believe Brendaan would have allowed any player to take them lightly.

I wish he would have got more annoyed on the park, the amount of runs I used to make and he would take another touch made me raging every blinking game :-)
