Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

1158

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

Apart from the officials, I can’t see anything in Sevco to cause us any bother, apart from something coming off the pace of Mc.Kay.

He is there only real threat going forward and I’m not sure Lustig has the pace to track him.

If there is a doubt over Roberts’/ Forrest’s fitness, I would have Gamboa playing in front of Lustig.

    Is Cundy of German extract?

I only ask as the ‘d’ in the german word for ‘and’, which is ‘und’, is pronounced as ‘t’.

    McKay has little end product.

For all the raves he got in last game against us i don’t remember a single chance he created.

    I was that joker.

There was no way that the establishment wasn’t going to give them a big win prior to next week.

I originally played my joker in our 6-0 win against ICT only to be disallowed as I had already picked celtic in an earlier week.

They will now believe they have a chance next week. Cannae wait. If only I could pick us with another joker.

  12. Re Garner yellow card.

Several weeks ago on BBC Sportsound, There was an explanation of the red/ yellow card guidance to refs. It featured Scott McDonald who had just lost his appeal and who had been told why he had lost the appeal. At the same time, another Well player decided not to appeal because of what had been said to Skippy and the club.

It would be interesting if BBC were to replay that section and then compare and contrast with what Garner and Beaton did today.

Congratulations on being a Granddad, you must be proud.

Paul told me the news regarding Jim Devine, it was devastating news for me, On the way back to the Blane Valley I shed a few tears on the train, I knew Jim for as long as cqn brought us together, He was a great Cqner.

I remember when Zbysek came over for wee holiday, We went to the La Laterna for a meal then Party time, I can’t remember who was all there, but all great Cqners, I had to go to the toilet and when I got back to the table I was going to pay the bill but sneaky Jim Had already paid the bill, that was the kind of man he was, a heart full of kindness.I’ll certainly miss him, RIP Jim, I’ll give your daughters a big hug next time I see them at the game.

    Richie.

How are you coping with the break-in at your Cafe, When Stephen come back to the BV to give you the news that your Cafe had been broken into,That was Heart breaking news, I hope there wasn’t bad damage to your place, see you soon.

I haven’t been on the blog much lately but I’ll try and post more often.

Tommy Gemmell. Rest in peace big man, you were a great player in a great team, I remember your goals, never seen you score a bad one and they were all shot at speed. one of the greats of the game,Pity the SFA didn’t acknowledge your skills more with a few extra caps, but we know what the SFA are, bitter and twisted.

No doubt about it, they linked Wright before Wednesday night’s game his team lost, remember placings in the league affect the payout you get,its tapping up supposed to be illegal, but its Sevco so thats fine. No rules to be applied.

  23. Weefra

If it not been closed down properly the computer will run a disc check when it started up again however I get a screen telling me it is doing that and when it has completed its checks it restarts normally. Bye the way I’m not saying thats what your wife has done , it usually is something simple. HH

I reckon its highly unlikely Brendan Rodgers will pay cognisance to Sevco and select a different Celtic side accordingly, on the glorious 12th .

That would be paying more respect to any other side of whom we’re already 27

    clear?

Mikel Lustig ( if fit ) will start, he would be first choice even in Europe and the other wide right position in front of ML will go to the fittest man at home for Celtic.

At the moment GMS is in possession of the jersey PR and JF are at differing stages of injury.

p.s. great article from the bhoy , you’ve brought up your family so well
