Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

1158

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

  1. MoonbeamsWD,

If I can get up there, you certainly can. Just make sure you take a break at the mid bit, even marvel for a few minutes at the awesome sight as you walk through that N-Trance to PARADISE.

No thanks required, I simply passed on MWD’s details to you. The thanks are solely for MWD.

PS: MWD, I can give you a jet pack…:)

Moussa enjoys the physical side of the game. The Huns won’t be able to kick him out of his stride as he is too powerful. He is their worst nightmare.

Celtic need to win the battle next week.

I think we will and don’t expect this version of an Ibrox club will be able to muster even their staple hate.

I do expect Celtic to win and win well. Recently the club has been a little staid, even flat at times. Maybe harsh, but those who go to the game will know what I mean. Personally I put it down to motivational factors.

I don’t expect Celtic will lack any motivation against them. Not at all.

Would you tire of scoring against that lot ?

  6. MoonbeamsWD,

I hope you Witness Love winning so well next week.

1-0 will do, anything more is a bonus.

Anything that takes the hatred out of Fitba is good for me and obviously you as well…. You have experienced the actual Hatred more than Anyone.

I love Football. I Love talking to other teams fans and complimenting them on how they are doing. I told a Man City Dad and his Son that he was going to the best ever atmosphere, Celtic were awesome that night as well… they just ran out of steam late 1st half and midway through 2nd half.

Celtic are FITTER and a lot Stronger now.

  7. Apparently Celtic have a scout at the Belgrade derby. I’m watching it right now and have come to the conclusion that Brendan has identified a weakness in our team’s fouling and rolling about on the ground ability…

I switched between the ManU game and Hamilton’s game today for a while.

Without comparing quality, the most obvious thing was the pace of both games.

The O T game was played at the pace which we play at, whilst the game in Govan was so pedestrian.

That alone should do for them next week.

Have the SFA announced their appointed one yet?

  9. Petec

Not likely in my time will I ever see a Hun horde not full of hate. Complete obliteration of that club from this planet is the only thing that will see a time of non Hun hate on mass.

Sad but true. It’s instilled in them, one or two apart from cradle to grave.

Lennybhoy has connected many a Cqner, I received a phone call a few months back around 6pm and Celtic were playing in a CL game that night, from Coatbridge Paper Bhoy who I had obviously never met, he was back in Coatbridge from Australia and got my number from Lennybhoy as he grew up next door to Aunt who he had worked this out from some of my posts……. Again CQN at its best, I was speaking to a Celtic fan who I had never met but grew up with all my cousins about a mile away from me…….. Lennybhoy much appreciated

I believe there is a time and place for just about anything. I can understand why some choose to hide behind a Moniker. I can understand why some choose to step out from behind that Moniker and meet like minded individuals in person.

We are all part of the same Family, Blantyretim has said to me and others that I am like one of our own who has gone on to the eternal Paradise. Personally, I don’t agree with Blantyretim, I couldn’t lace his boots and therefore will not mention his name. Additionally there are far more current bloggers who do far more for Celtic and CQN’s cause, again I couldn’t lace their Boots; you and they know who they are.

I am but a Blogger and Celtic Fan who encourages others to look out for Celtic and each other.

I am Celtic, you are Celtic, we are all Celtic.

Hugh Keevins has been brilliant talking about Billy, Tommy and most importantly their wives, Hugh can be a great listen but sooner or later he reverts to the pantomime villain and goes with the narrative one is as bad as the other and all that guff…..he plays his role BUT this week Hugh has been talking from the heart for once :-)

    KEVJUNGLE on 4th March 2017 6:03 am

Ach,….it’s a sad time on here just now.

Almost two years ago, l thought my number was up.

I got scared when the hospital called my home one day out of the blue to tell me that, the mushroom sized lump that they had removed from my bowel six months earlier was cancerous after having given me the all clear when they released me from hospital at the time.

When l feared the worst, l came onto CQN one day to say what l thought would be my goodbye’s to a place that l knew was magical, filled with special folk yet, lt was a place where l brought all of my, paranoia, conspiracy theories, etc….and, operated like a hun riding a bull in a China shop.

The delays from the hospital with the results of my tests that they had called me in for, only served to heighten the fears that the cancer had spread to my liver and lungs.

Not being person of faith – at that time – l asked if the blog would pray for my wife and son as, with the way things were looking, l thought that my time had come to be taken away from them.

I asked for prayers for my wife and son because, the fear in they’re eyes was hurting more than the thought of battling cancer, l’m sure EDB will know what l’m talking about, l say that EDB ‘will’ know because he’s still on these pages, just like he’s always been, just like he always will be. God Bless You Jim Devine.

If, this demon returns to me l will never let the blog know, it’s not right, l’m sorry for before.

Btw, when l came on and asked for prayers for my wife and son, little did l think that l would be blessed by a four week tsunami of CQN prayers for which l’ll be forever indebted, as l waited for the hospital results. Thank

    You.
