Tommy had died. For the staff, it was too much for us.

192

There was a profound poignancy rather than exhilaration because Tommy Burns had died a week earlier, with the funeral taking place two days before the game.  After the title had been won, the Celtic squad re-emerged in T-shirts bearing his image.

Strachan had a cuppa.  ‘I am a tea addict,’ he says.  ‘I’ll only drink on special occasions.  After that I thought, “Right.  It’s been a real hard year.”  I wanted to make sure my family were all right because they were at the game.  The woman who is always there offered me a cup of tea.  Tommy had died.  I had to celebrate but I didn’t feel like celebrating.  For the staff, it was too much for us.

Strachan would also say that ‘being Tommy’s mate was the best part of joining Celtic’.

Someone mentioned earlier they wouldn’t want overpaid, older players from the EPL at CP whilst we let guys like Ki go… Kenwyne Jones was mentioned as being one we shouldn’t be in for.

I think if Lennon got the chance to sign Kenwyne Jones he’d do so in a heartbeat. He’s been looking for a striker with presence for a while and this guy fits the bill, he’s a handful for defenders and would give us a different option- I’d take a punt on him anyway on a loan deal with the option to make it permanent.

  2. On more than one occasion on our supporters bus, the conversation will turn to “best ever Celtic team” and we’ll have a go at performing an impossible task.

Now I wasn’t fortunate enough to see Bobby Murdoch play but my Dad told me that he was the best he’d seen so Bobby is always the first name on my teamsheet.

As for Tommy, whilst I didn’t have the pleasure of meeting him, from all I saw and read and heard he was Celtic in human form. He’s on the teamsheet too.

The month of May took the life of three Celtic greats in my eyes and probably many more.

May they Rest In Peace. Bobby Murdoch, Tommy Burns and My Dad.

Its hard to believe that Celtic medical staff haven’t been shown the door yet. How many seasons has Zeng Zhi been out through injury?

We’ll need him fit for Asia.

    When’s the first Asia qualifier?

i agree that he’s the sort of player we need – and not too old (27). I have to disagree on the loan deal thing though – we have gone down the loan route too often in recent seasons, and it prevents stability, and prevents building a dynasty. 2 seasons in a row we have had an ‘on loan’ goalkeeper, and once again (3rd time in a row) we are frantically looking for a Number1 keeper in the close season. For a club of Celtic’s size, that is both embarassing and not acceptable.

The first game I saw Tommy play was in a 0-0 draw against rangers in 1976 at Celtic Park in what was the first season of the original Premier Division. He had made his debut a few weeks earlier against Aberdeen. His flowing red hair certainly meant he looked distinctive but bhoy could he play.

Along with King Kenny he was my favourite player of the mid late 70s.

My best memory however was a nothing game against Partick Thistle at Firhill on 29th March 1978.We had a dreadful season after losing Kenny to Liverpool and Danny was injured for most of the season. We had lost the corresponding game 1-0 earlier in the season. We had however just had an unexpected 2-0 victory against eventual Champions rangers so went into the game with high hopes.

My Grandad and Dad were both Thistle fans(though I’ve now converted my Dad!)and this was the only time that all 3 of us went to a game together which is why it means so much to me..Anyway Tommy ran the midfield and scored 2 brilliant goals early on and we went on to win 4-0(our biggest win of that season)which secured bragging rights for me.

As DBBIA put it so succinctly earlier not the Greatest Ever Player to have played for Celtic but undoubtedly the Greatest Ever Celt.

R.I.P. Tommy Burns and Bobby Murdoch-two great players who graced our Midfield and epitomise what our club is all about but died way too soon.

any time I’ve seen him he doesn’t make life easy for defenders, admittedly I haven’t seen him as much since his Sunderland days.

What I’m saying is I think Lennon would be interested, and if so I would try and do a deal along the lines of the Forster deal to give us the option to have a good look before committing long term.

After all, we signed Pavel Brozek who was very similiar to what we already had, hence he never got much of a chance.

Big Kenwyne would at least represent a different option, not saying hes our dream signing but its the kind of market we’re competing in at the moment.

My most vivid memory of TB playing – game against Rangers at Ibrox where we lost 3-2 having led 2-0 at half-time, playing brilliantly in the first half.

I was standing in the Celtic part of the old Ibrox enclosure and can vividly remember big Shuggie Edvaldson running full pelt from midfield towards the penalty box – screaming at Tommy and pointing to his napper as he ran.

TB duly obliged with a stunning 20-30 yard cross – right where Big Shuggie (the unstoppable object) met the penalty spot – he never needed to alter his stride one jot – cue rippling net.

Cultured left foot? – you bet!!!

TB – superb human being – Mr. Celtic.

On my first ever trip to Celtic Park, Tommy Burns was magic and scored a winner on the night, which failed to serve as Celtic were dumped out of Europe by the mighty SSW Innsbruck. It was October 1977.

My next memory is of him being a star in the league cup semi against Rangers at Hampden, the one and only occasion on which I went to a derby game with my father, God rest him. We lost 3-2. Tommy was sent off for dissent after Rangers were awarded a soft penalty. “No the bloody best wan,” my dad said, as Tam trooped off.

He was a bit gallus in those days, the bhould Burnsy. God rest him too.
