Tonev and racism in Scottish football

1193

I’m not about to give you a character reference for Aleksandar Tonev, he may be prone to racist outburst, for all I know.  Society, and therefore football, still has a racism problem, just read how coolly Luis Suarez played addressing an opponent as “negro”.  The game has to react firmly when presented with racist banners, which regularly appear in Eastern Europe.

On the balance of probabilities, would a born-and-bred Scottish international be judged to have made a racist remark during a game against an opponent he doesn’t share a common tongue with?

If Kenny Miller was similarly accused and claimed to be misquoted, how would you feel?  Scottish footballers just don’t have a history of this kind of remark; I’d be inclined to believe Miller.  So, I expect, would Scottish football.

Tonev comes from one of those Eastern European countries.  Scottish football acknowledged it had no evidence to act on but found him guilty.

Based in just as little evidence, could you please decide if Scottish football is guilty of racist generalisation in its handling of this matter?  I know you don’t have enough evidence to come to a proper decision, but that’s the point.

Maybe if Aleks was at Ibrox on Tuesday making flute band gestures to TV cameras at halftime, the like of which Scottish Government minster Roseanna Cunningham once insisted was unacceptable and illegal, we’d all realise he didn’t mean any harm.  Or was it just the Sign of the Cross, Ms Cunningham?

But Tonev’s not “one of us”, so who cares?

The auction for two debenture hospitality seats, which started our bid to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals ended a few minutes ago.  Thanks to everyone who bid, the winner paid £295, a fantastic gesture.  Thanks also to Celtic sponsor, Magners, for pulling things together for us and making it happen.

We have a couple of slightly less-illustrious premium seats for tomorrow in the Jock Stein stand from Magners, which you can win by answering the following question:

Which team do Celtic play tomorrow?

This competition is only open for an hour, closes at 2:0, so those who enter have an excellent chance.  Keep an eye on your inbox this afteroon.  If you’d like to donate £1 to the kitchen fund in tandem with your entry, you can do so here.

Terms and Conditions apply.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

It’s a great read, you’ll enjoy it.

  4. This time they have no evidence on Tonev, last season they had evidence on players, managers, and officials, gambling on football games,Ally McCoist waved the sheets of paper around like raffle tickets, why WASENT that acted on? If I’m a lawyer for Tonev, as I said last night, I’m taking it to the highest court in the land, I wonder who was on the panel? Shhhhhhh let’s not go there.

  5. Afternoon Bhoys & Ghirls. Apologies for changing the subject…

If we want to be able to keep players such as Virgil van Dijk, Craig Gordon, and John Guidetti at the club, we may need to stretch our salary structure a little (for exceptional players). Perhaps we could get a few EBTs set up! ;o)

If we could reduce the amount of “dead wood” draining financial resources from the club whilst giving little or no benefit in return, perhaps we would be in a better position to offer deals attractive to a better quality of player, and adopt a “quality over quantity” approach.

There seem to be quite a lot of players still on our books who I can’t really see contributing a lot in future. While I do think Nir Bitton, Beram Kayal and Leigh Griffiths are pretty decent players, I know that many others don’t necessarily agree, so I have included them on the list below of potential “surplus to requirements” players.

Which, if any of these would YOU keep at the club?

I have not read back so do not know how much has been said. However, I would say that regardless of what punitive action the SFA have taken; surely there must be a case for criminal proceedings but wait…stop press…where’s the corroboration…:)

  7. We signed Tonev on loan from Aston Villa and we also have a few other players on loan from the English league – we’d love to keep the two from Manchester City.

If any of these players had been accused of this in the English game the FA, in these circumstances, would have reached a completely different decision and the player would have been in the clear.

Crowds are not as big as they once were at Celtic Park and the guys on the park are likely to be able to hear more now than would have been the case in the days of 60,000 attendances. Assuming the incident didn’t happen just after a goal was scored – then the chances of one of the other 21 players or one of the four official hearing something must have been reasonably good.

Tovev is a wide player so usually plays nearer the crowd. Had just one Celtic supporter heard what he is alleged to have said then he or she would have been disgusted and would in my opinion, would have voiced their anger.

All the SFA needed was one other person to have heard this alleged remark and the guilt would have been clear. One out of tens of thousands.

Then they had television evidence – I am sure our friends in the broadcast media would have made sure they had a good look at their footage to see if they had any evidence of wrong doing and likewise would have alerted the SFA. The SFA may well have looked at the footage themselves. They found nothing.

    So no player heard anything.

No supporter of either club heard anything.

    No match official heard anything.

    Neither dug out heard anything.

Yet on the balance of probabilities the SFA believe one player who thought he heard something that no-one else did. And if the rest heard nothing due to the noise in the stadium how can the player be certain he heard what he thought he heard given the extreme noise around him?

Did they test his ears? I bet they never.

Tonev is now, as things stand, tagged with being a racist and a liar.

If you were a player in England – or just about any league in the world – would you want to come to this league were you will be presumed guilty despite an overwhelming lack of evidence that you have done anything wrong. Players around the world will be astonished.

The world’s media are reporting this and the message is clear – Tonev is a racist. He should sue the SFA for defamation and Celtic should back the boy every step of the way.

On the balance probabilities – if he said what is claimed – I believe that someone would have heard him say it. No-one did so the SFA have got this completely wrong – again.

  10. I may be wrong (it has been known) but I imagine that when the complaint against Alex Tonev was found to be “established” he was given the reasons or told they would be sent on later.

The fact that he has 5 days to appeal suggests he would need all the information before the clock started ticking. How else can he be in a position to decide all the grounds on which to appeal, or even whether to bother appealing.

We do not know the reasons given for the verdict. We do not know what evidence was presented. We do not know who was there except John Collins and Alex Tonev.

What we do know is that Alex says he will appeal and that Celtic are supporting him in this.

It is time the SFA implemented the recommendation of the JAG report from 2011.

  14. Yet again I cannot believe what I am reading. So Tonev, being Bulgarian, and despite spending time in Birmingham, would never have heard of the word c**t, far less know what it means or even use it, according to one poster.

That is just insulting and risible. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t such a serious matter.

Just wondering if anybody on here has been there or knows someone who has worked there, would appreciate any feedback. 23. iPaddy McCourt on

Racist abuse is disgusting and is correctly viewed as a serious offence. For that very reason, no-one should be found guilty of racism on a ‘one word against another’ basis. There has to be something to corroborate the evidence of the complainer, be that witness evidence, TV evidence, SOMETHING.

Certain charges should be subject to a ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ test and this is one of them. Otherwise, there is too much scope for innocent players to be wrongly accused and convicted, leaving their reputation besmirched.

    How long does it take?

    —————————————————————–

    Bamboo,

It can take a very long time as all assets and liabilities must be established and agreed before any distributions can be made to creditors. It is the liquidators job to pursue any realistic claims which the company has against other to get the money in for the benefit of creditors. This can take a lot of time to either agree the claim of, possibly, to defend it in court. If, for any reason, the liquidators completed the distribution of assets but a genuine creditor was not included because they had not considered/agreed the claim, the liquidators could be responsible themselves for settling the debt.

Expect this one to run for a long time yet.
