Topping’s who knew what when?

2675

In his Q&A session with the Daily Record yesterday, outgoing SPFL chairman, Ralph Topping touched on the subject of who knew what when, regarding Rangers slide into liquidation saying:

“There wasn’t one single person ever who envisaged this case happening. You tell me who pointed out that this was going to happen – did you?

“The biggest assumption about the set-up in the SPL would be that you would have Rangers and Celtic playing in it in perpetuity – nobody thought that those two bastions of football would ever be involved in anything like this and nobody flagged it up.”

Well, in October 2011 I knew.  This CQN article from 27 October 2011 notes in very specific detail Rangers were going to liquidate, a phoenix would be created which wanted direct access to the SPL (the top flight at that time).  I got the timing wrong, predicting the phoenix would take place during the season, but to be fair, it later became clear this was Craig Whyte’s plan at the time.

Ralph Topping’s SPL knew too.  Rangers alerted them to the situation that very month.  The SPL spend November, December and January preparing the ground for Rangers administration and liquidation, a period during which a new TV deal was signed.

  1. 2 hours and 22 mins for a statement.

    Anyway…

How about next preseason we go to Scandinavia and play preseason friendlies with teams already half way through their season????

  2. INVINCIBLE 'GG on

Whatever part of my club is dependent on Rangers I am willing to lose.

Profound and just as relevant today as it was 6 years ago.

  3. Should we avoid qualifying for the Scottish Cup Final so that our players can go on holiday earlier and therefore be back for training camp earlier?

Because let’s face it; we are going to be playing the most important games of our season at this time of year for the foreseeable future…

  4. Bad and all as the Board might seem to some people, the only reason Scottish football has not shrunk to the level of part-time football, is that the Celtic board have managed to attrack high profile managers, who in turn persauded EPL standard players to Celtic Park. I fear that this will not happen again and we will indeed witness Celtic becoming nothing more than a part time club.

Had someone lit a flare on Wednesday night, PL would have plenty to say about it.

In the rest of my post I mentioned stages of action, there are Scottish Cup ties, League Cup ties that can be targeted, a number of forms of visible protest, away games, that could be taken before hitting Celtic where it hurts first. Then they’d know whats coming.

So far its just disorganised and surely the last thing anyone wants is people to just drift away and then be replaced?

I don’t know if you wrote to Celtic to inform them of your decision? Sadly its been an invisible protest so far for those of the same mindset and playing all your cards at once maybe not the best idea.

I’m not saying you are wrong but I think we need a united front on this.

Was NL a top manager that the board attracted.

  11. The one thing that would really get people to sit up and take note is if we boycotted our first home game with newco. If we did the away game they would just fill the end with more huns.

  12. !!Bada Bing!! on

Teams that were stiffed in Europe by the cheating huns, should be made aware of this scandal.

Per head of population we get the best attendances in Europe along with Holland – obviously propped up by 40-50k+ at two venues in Glasgow but most other clubs have their house in order financially now.

Sticking up for your club and it’s board makes you an apologist, statements like that are Hunnish, imo.

Did none of those things. Just got scunnered waiting for the charlatans who run CFC to grow a set of hee-haws. I decided I would no longer let CFC dictate the rhythm of my life any longer.

No matter what happens now I doubt I will ever set foot inside CP again cos in truth I just haven’t missed it that much.

Just how I feel and I couldn’t be arsed waiting for an organised boycott to begin – I just did my own thing.

I suspect that’s how it will be for many supporters who do not want to pay to be cheated and arrive at the same conclusion as I did – only the timing will differ.

  18. up to now the plc board have let celtic supporters down because of there lack of tackling corruption in the scottish game now why would they let this happen?

  19. My friends in Celtic,

The reason I log on to CQN is that I am a Celtic supporter and this is one of the better blogs, if not the best.

If I had already walked away from all things Celtic, that would logically include this blog.

    Only my opinion though.

    HH.

  20. However, I hope the board don’t underestimate the strength of feeling about the systematic cheating.

We as a club cannot let this go.

  21. GREENPINATA, 100percent right it will surely kill the club if allowed to be got away without tackling

Yet you’re still on here and thats because you care, even if you feel you haven’t missed it much.

But for any ‘boycott’ to be effective it has to be coordinated and visible, so that no one is in any doubt what is happening and the media cannot ignore it.

For me, the resignation by PL from the SPFL board prior to their announcement of “Nothing to see here, time to move on” is strange.

Why not wait until after the announcement and resign declaring that you can no longer work on a board which is so heavily conflicted and unable to show that they have Scottish football’s interest first and foremost?

Not getting this logic. I hope that there is a strategy behind this yet to unfold, and that we are simply not intertwined with the last 5 years of deceit. Time will tell!.

  25. The heady days of the Invincibles season seems light years away after the recent developments, and the league hasn’t started even.

What a public cluster-F the Green Brigade and the Club’s hierarchy contrived to make of Champions League qualifying. Both the incompetence and basic lack of responsibility is astounding. All positivity and focus was has been sucked out of qualifying and behind closed doors Brendan and team must be shaking their heads in disbelief at all the unnecessary distraction. A 900 seat hole in the standing section for a crucial CL qualifier- are you F*****G kidding me???

Drawing Linfield filled me with dread on a personal level. Nothing good ever comes from rubbing shoulders with their particular brand of Kultchur. There was always the probability we would be dragged down to their level, and boy did some fall for it hook line and sinker. Our best test of preseason was nullified, when the tie was moved to the 14th. The first team not getting 90 minutes versus Lyon was vital in preparation for Rosenborg.

Now today we are blethering distractedly about some hun administrative roaster instead of remaining focused for next week. Let’s talk about clearing out the governing bodies root and branch after we’re through to the group stages.

  26. Crc the strategy was to get out before the announcement and for all of them to pretend that Celtic didn’t know about it (when of course they have been involved all along).

Think of it this way. This legal advice and stance was agreed many months ago (it certainly wasn’t recently). PL was on the board. So must have known about this stance and must have agreed to it (else you would expect some noise before that). So when Celtic said this is down to the football authorities and we expect a review he knew just what sort of review they had in plan. He played his part and now he can claim there is a “review”. He then resigns so that he doesn’t get any questions from Celtic supporters because ahem he wasn’t there.

    It’s bollocks.

They have colluded all the way down the line here. The Plc only care about money.

It is the hope of the cheated boyfriend that his girlfriend won’t betray him that keeps the relationship alive.

There is clear evidence of the cheating. I’m afraid we just need to find enough courage and self respect to walk away.

If not she will just cheat again. It’s in her nature.

  27. Oh, and those boring us to tears over why and how they will no longer support CELTIC, can you do us a favor then and get the eff off a CELTIC blog then please?!?!
