Trashing a historic football club in two easy steps

605

I was delighted when Dundee were awarded the vacant place in the SPL in July last year.  They are a club with an outstanding history (check it out here) whose fans have suffered poor performances and downright bad decisions since the finished within a point of Dundee United and Aberdeen, and were relegated from the Premier Division in its first season.

With a latent, considerable-sized supporter base, by any measure they should be a secure SPL club.  Only Celtic, Sevco, Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs have more fans, although Dundee United may have closed their historical gap.

If Rangers had not been liquidated Dundee would currently be in the First Division, most probably at or near the top.  Barry Smith would be getting ready for a final push for promotion.  Promotion came too soon, they are miles adrift and will be relegated unless Hearts go into administration, suffer a 17 point penalty and make players redundant.

Sacking Smith and appointing John Brown, in political terms, could be described as a brave decision.  ‘Mad’ is another word you could use.  Reports that (suffering) Dundee fans, and shareholders, are in revolt at the appointment, should surprise no one.  John Brown’s very public performances last year marked him out for his communication skills, ability to plan and make considered decisions.  Put him in charge, and you know what you’re getting.

Should we beat them tomorrow, spare a thought for those in dark blue in the corner of the stadium.

  1. FFM I’m entitled to put the record straight.

I don’t see much political about the arrests in Battersea. If a bunch of strippers, male and female, are paid to do their act in broad daylight in a public park, arrests will follow. It was the Police. Pre-Thatcher.

I fancy that they didn’t put enough into make those arrest. I strongly suspect that they moved in hard when the show was over.

The Bhould Bhoys is not a term of reference with which I am familiar.

The discussion regarding Rebel songs was revisited by Neil Can tonight. He then widened it to other, and petty, issues. You could ask him why he did that. I don’t know.

    It’s now just repetitive.

You say “I’ll respect you if you give me truth.” The accusatorial “if”. Not the Laconic.

    Peace FFM.

  2. It’s strange the relationship you have with rival clubs.

Dundee:first thing that comes to mind is them defeating Hearts on that glorious last day of the season in 1986 when I was in Paisley, more in hope than expectation but my wildest dreams came true.

It was around this time my Boys Guild team-St Margaret’s Airdrie- got Dundee tracksuits from a sponsor to allow us to look semi-professional on arrival at matches. They covered our Hibs strips! The team was made up of nine red hot Celtic fans and two boys who didn’t really care but wished they had more back up. Dundee again.

Fast forward to a Boxing Day match, lots of snow in Scotland but the night time ko at Dens went ahead. My wimpish brother and I took root in a Lanarkdhire pub to watch proceedings only to see the camera pan in on my mother (in her 60’s) sitting bold as brass in the Celtic end. She had braved the snow, the hostile Dundonian welcome for her supporters bus, and was belting out “cheerio 10 in a row”. Our pints lost a bit of flavour.

I’ve always really enjoyed defeating Dundee. Henrik’s guided missile into the top corner at Dens; Neil’s peroxide debut that seemed to enrage their support. Clinching the league at Celtic Park, with everyone I knew then, seemingly being there. I love beating them and the fact that I’ve been chased through the streets up there by the ‘Derry’ on a few occasions has nothing to do with it.

    COYBIG.

  3. FFM you’re now becoming tiresome with irksome side swipes.

I’m familiar with the video and the song.

I was introduced to his work initially with “The Ballad of John McLean”. Then “Grigalee! Grigaloo!” as we called it.

I still cannot listen to The Ballad of John McLean without being moved. And without thinking of the subsequent, and systematic, destruction of the social fabric of his city and mine.

“I saw two shooting stars last night

I wished on them but they were only satellites

Is it wrong to wish on space hardware

    I wish, I wish, I wish you’d care”

    Love those lyrics.

i would like to point out in case the pie whisperer is lurking that i had no involvement whatsoever :o) as regards to how much drink was taken i believe all of it was the case. as i recall the story, after finding the kerry oot gone (can you gind something gone?) the SD burst in to the dressing room only to be met with a few empty screwtaps flying around head height. the local law enforcement were not involved. rock n roll eh!

No idea what your reference to Battersea is.

But I respect your determination to keep everything to “argument” and stay away from peronal indulgence.

Mibbes that’s where you’re going wrong in your “assessment” of CQN.

“Neil Can” did not “widen” the arguments as you put it. He stuck to his very clear and simple point of view, which was, is and always has been, freedom of speech.

That debate with Paul67 is another issue from which you’re contributions are seperate in reference to this wee con feckin flab.

Your post @ 02:23, I genuinely don’t know where you have taken sudden offence.

But it strikes me as feckin ironic, when the big political issue of today’s Celtic Supporter is other people taking offence at them, whether it be at young boys holding up a banner with zombies on it, or the fact they USED TO sing songs about the freedom fighting of a certain country which it seems is not entitled to celebrate this freedom in Scotland/. I say used to, as they have already been forced restrict their singing repertiore to keep bigots happy. And I re-enforce the opinion of others, Ntass. Next, we WILL be asked to stop wearing Celtic tops in public, as we are inviting trouble. Similar to the lassies wearing short skirts argument that you’ve maybe found yourself arguing for in recent years?

Mibbes time to throw off the blanket of arrogance that the polis give its members, and start thinking like a human being again?

:)) Was trying to catch up there, but am still lost.

I reckon that says it all. The sign of a good boozer is not the mental things he does, but how cleverly he converts the blame and hides the evidence :))))) Aw aye, been there often enough, but have never been fit enough to apply this rule. Hence my distasteful familiarity with the rozzers of S St. Grrrrrr.

    :))))

  8. Art of War I’ve never worked in Rome nor claimed to have done so.

I’m well aware of how I come across. You have to be yourself.

Has it escaped your notice that I am seldom quoted, but often described and rescribed? I know why.

I’m likely to be absent once again for a few weeks.

No way, I was tempted to share a link to that. Absolutely love that song.

The bass lines are amazing, and the chords on the keyboards.

The lassie singing – not an “x-factor” voice, but in the times of good music that wasn’t the point. That song is one of my favourites amigo !!

Only reason I know it is Janice Long played it one night when I had the ole tape deck on record.

    Love it!

  11. FFM my comments on the GB and songs at Celtic Park are confined to the legal and technical. It’s private property. I would never encourage people, especially young men, into a confrontation that they haven’t the resources or the guile to win, and which they are therefore doomed to lose. That does not mean I am averse to a fight. Far from it.

Thanks for your acknowledgment of my eschewing of the personal.

Perhaps you could do the same.

If you again insinuate, or state, that I am, or ever have been, a policeman or a member of the security forces in any capacity, then I will take the option of ignoring you.

  12. greenyinfurrafenian @03:15 the funniest line I’ve read on CQN was when I flippantly asked “Come on bhoys. What’s offensive about being called a Fenian Bastard?”

Nat Know responded “They missed out the word unrepentant”.

You make a fair point. I won’t make any more insinuations that you’re a polis ever again.

I do think your own posts do that over time anyway, so no need for me to do that.

In response, mibbes you can try and defer from winding up situations that are borne from sensitive subjects here? It’s not just me that has witnessed you being a negative influence and riling CQNers on where you find them most passionate, eh.

    FFM? WTF.

I pose questions. No doubt. Better to hear and debate them here amongst friends than be taken unaware by the enemy. We won’t win the battles by being nice to each other all the time.

The whole point of debate is to challenge.

Greenyin (fur the fenian, as my mum always jokes. I succeeded technically. Was even reasonably well paid. But I just didn’t have it. On the positive side it makes me appreciate those who do. The musicians must be paid.

    —-

I was concluding the point in a post. That kind of representation is very MSM in it’s approach and not going to take us forward.

    For example:

Character A: “I promise never to relate you to rozzers ever again”.

Character B: “But you just did?”

Character A: “All I was saying was, I promise not to relate you to the rozzers ever again!”.

Character B: “There you did it again…”

I don’t know….I could go on all night if you wanted…

    Ach, ffs, let’s be pals.

  18. There’s a damnable aspect to this site.

It makes early rises an eye stinging, curseable affair.

But unlike the bevvy, you don’t wake up and say – never again.

See you all again soon. Unless the site becomes a democracy and denies me a voice.

petec I’m unsure what St Pat’s you speak of. I don’t think it’s the one in Coatbridge.

  19. FFM did you understand my point about being rescribed and seldom quoted?

There’s a density about how I write. I can’t help it. I’m not a writer in the artistic sense.

There’s a man I know who even in the shortest of emails exhibits breathtaking pace.

He’s like one of those guys we went to school with who wasn’t that interested in playing football.

    Good health to you all.

  20. Never done it before but made the mistake of looking at RM.

So, according to their mentality, (“mental” being the key component of that word), it’s OK to sing all those songs, the fault lies squarely with ESPN for daring to object about it on air!

Now think on that a little while guys. Take it one step further back.

    I’ll help you out.

If you hadn’t been singing the songs in the first place, and belting it out as loud as you could, perhaps ESPN might not have found anything to object to.

Oops, my mistake there, expecting you to think.

As the saying goes, if you haven’t got the tools, don’t take on the job.
