Trashing a historic football club in two easy steps

605

I was delighted when Dundee were awarded the vacant place in the SPL in July last year.  They are a club with an outstanding history (check it out here) whose fans have suffered poor performances and downright bad decisions since the finished within a point of Dundee United and Aberdeen, and were relegated from the Premier Division in its first season.

With a latent, considerable-sized supporter base, by any measure they should be a secure SPL club.  Only Celtic, Sevco, Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs have more fans, although Dundee United may have closed their historical gap.

If Rangers had not been liquidated Dundee would currently be in the First Division, most probably at or near the top.  Barry Smith would be getting ready for a final push for promotion.  Promotion came too soon, they are miles adrift and will be relegated unless Hearts go into administration, suffer a 17 point penalty and make players redundant.

Sacking Smith and appointing John Brown, in political terms, could be described as a brave decision.  ‘Mad’ is another word you could use.  Reports that (suffering) Dundee fans, and shareholders, are in revolt at the appointment, should surprise no one.  John Brown’s very public performances last year marked him out for his communication skills, ability to plan and make considered decisions.  Put him in charge, and you know what you’re getting.

Should we beat them tomorrow, spare a thought for those in dark blue in the corner of the stadium.

    as I believe that vmahn’s away to walk his dog I can answer your BB question. There are 5 series’. The final one [curiously referred to as series 5 ;-)] was split into two with the final 8 episodes not airing in the US until later this year. So I’ve watched 4½ series so far and loved every minute.

    Haven’t tried Sons Of Anarchy. Indeed I’ve only recently started The Wire – 5 episodes in and finding it a bit hard going with the language on 2 fronts – the “bad” stuff but also I have trouble making out most of what is being said. Must be getting old.

  6. Eddie u really believe posting something offensive in a medium whole world wud c is just banter? Had it been bout the holocaust sky wud have sacked him within the hr . The fact that this is considered banter shows how big a problem it is. Was his next bit of banter bout 9/11?

    You ask why the shamrock is in the Celtic badge.

    It isn’t. The Celtic crest contains a four-leaved clover, not a shamrock. The clue would be in the four-leaves. A shamrock has only three leaves.

  10. Rangers game marred by inappropriate chanting

    ESPN apologised for the inappropriate chants during the game. Picture: SNS

    Published on Saturday 23 February 2013 15:14

    RANGERS Football Club have said they are “disappointed” in fans who were involved in sectarian chanting during the team’s game against Berwick Rangers today.

    Inappropriate songs were heard from a section of the travelling support during the Irn-Bru Third Division clash at Shielfield Park, the home ground of Berwick Rangers.

    Superintendent Tim Smith, from Northumbria Police, said: “By and large, the fans were very well behaved, but there was a short outburst involving some sectarian chanting towards the start of the game.

    “At the beginning of the game, we identified that some chanting had taken place and we have taken video evidence of that to do follow-up inquiries.

    “In addition, two people have been arrested for that offence and are in custody.

    “We have video evidence that will be investigated by officers from the FOCUS (Football Co-ordination Unit for Scotland) team from Strathclyde Police.”

    During the match, which ended in a 3-1 win to Rangers, the Ibrox side released the following statement: “The club is disappointed by certain outbursts of inappropriate singing by a section of the support at Berwick. Our fans have been excellent this season both home and away and we do not want to see this tarnished.”

    Rangers manager Ally McCoist said those involved had let themselves and the club down.

    “I came off the park to be told the club have issued a statement,” he said. “I back the club’s statement 100 per cent. If there was some unsavoury chanting, they’ve probably let themselves down – and they’ve let us all down a little bit.

    “I would be very hopeful it’s an isolated incident and we can move on.”

    says it all really…………………nothing to see hear timmy move along!

  14. The Dark Side rationalises:

    “Get back in to the 20th [17th surely] century….

    We won two world wars and ruled the globe without them but apparently we need to be observed more than any peoples in any other country on earth, that is our reward for defeating real evil and civilizing the globe en masse.

    Going to the dogs this place – its already too late, much respect to those Bears who post from the New World or the Continent, don’t dare allow yourselves to turn weak and return to these shores, you will only live to regret it no matter how misty-eyed one gets for home at times.”

    ——

    “tell you what – i’ll be the first to castigate our fans when we scream f** off to someone who is helping the poor, the needy or the downtrodden. you know, a kind of jesus character you might say.”

    ——

    “But the game was up years ago. Once these ******s are in power they NEVER let it go and purposely make sure that only their own kind follow after them.

    The one single reason an heir to the throne must NEVER be allowed to marry one.”

    ——

    ” Was it a set-up?

    Was it really RANGERS fans who were singing”

    ——

    “But yesterday was a quietly and meticulously orchestrated own goal.

    ESPN might be as culpable as the Bear’s that broke our Club’s guidelines yesterday.

    We need to investigate this from ALL angles IMO.”

  15. This from the herald

    “The club issued a statement during the second half, condemning the “inappropriate singing by a section of the away support”, and Rangers must be indignant that the club’s reputation can still be tarnished by a minority of troublemakers who continue to consider anti-Catholic sentiment part of their identity.”

    This report is factually flawed.

    The rangers statement didn’t condem anything.

    If ESPN hadn’t mentioned it, nothing would have been said by the club.

  26. With A Four-Leafed Clover On My Chest..

    (From Celtic Wiki )

    What Was Once A Shamrock..

    Is Now A Four-Leafed Clover..

    ~~~~~~~~~
    Instantly recognisable, hailed in song and story and recently voted among the best badges in club football – the Four-Leaf Clover of Celtic FC.
    It is believed the club adopted the four-leaf clover as an emblem when one was found growing close to the centre circle of the Celtic Park pitch in the 1890s.
    The discovery of the four-leaf clover was regarded in Celtic mythology as bringing luck to its finder. According to legend, each leaf represents something: the first is for hope, the second is for faith, the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck.
    Despite being used on club stationary etc for decades this famous crest did not actually appear on the club shirt until the late 1970s. Indeed Celtic’s first crest was the Celtic Cross and this was worn on the first strip. Another emblem used regularly in the club’s early years was a harp against a blue background.
    A large shamrock was used as the badge on away shirts in the 1950s. The Celtic Cross did make an appearance again in the centenary year and in 2003, to celebrate 100 years of the hoops. Fergus McCann once revealed tentative plans to replace the clover but outrage from fans saw the badge remain and today it is among the most enduring and loved of all Celtic icons.
    It can be seen everywhere from New York to Cape Town to Sydney. Recognised by all football fans and loved by Celtic supporters, the four-leaf clover is a badge of many honours.
