Trashing a historic football club in two easy steps

605

I was delighted when Dundee were awarded the vacant place in the SPL in July last year.  They are a club with an outstanding history (check it out here) whose fans have suffered poor performances and downright bad decisions since the finished within a point of Dundee United and Aberdeen, and were relegated from the Premier Division in its first season.

With a latent, considerable-sized supporter base, by any measure they should be a secure SPL club.  Only Celtic, Sevco, Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs have more fans, although Dundee United may have closed their historical gap.

If Rangers had not been liquidated Dundee would currently be in the First Division, most probably at or near the top.  Barry Smith would be getting ready for a final push for promotion.  Promotion came too soon, they are miles adrift and will be relegated unless Hearts go into administration, suffer a 17 point penalty and make players redundant.

Sacking Smith and appointing John Brown, in political terms, could be described as a brave decision.  ‘Mad’ is another word you could use.  Reports that (suffering) Dundee fans, and shareholders, are in revolt at the appointment, should surprise no one.  John Brown’s very public performances last year marked him out for his communication skills, ability to plan and make considered decisions.  Put him in charge, and you know what you’re getting.

Should we beat them tomorrow, spare a thought for those in dark blue in the corner of the stadium.

  1. Witht the demise of RFC- perhaps the European club most associated with official and unofficial forms of discrimination – decent Gers fans had a chance to wipe the slate clean.

The establishment of a new club should have been accompanied by a resounding apology for the treatment RFC meeted out to the RC population of Scotland. They could have made a point that the new club – whilst laying claim to the affections of generations of fans – was explicitly a club “open to all”.

This would have gone a long, long way to lancing a boil, and would I believe have garnered a lot of sympathy in Scotland towards the new owners.

Instead, Green and Co have made every attempt to pander to the worst elements of the old RFC support. They have very deliberately built their new club on top of the most offensive elements of the old one.

Perhaps the problem was that sectarianism was RFC’s strongest and most deeply held characteristic. Perhaps it trumped any footballing achievements the club could boast. What a sad indictment not just of Rangers but of Scotland in general…

Today’s “apology” is as mealy-mouthed and insincere as any in the past. “A small section”. “Certain inappropriate chants”. These happened “occasionally”.

A great opportunity has been missed, and those who would consider themselves “decent” Gers fans should be utterly ashamed at their inaction.

If you don’t mind reading subtitles, two French series are just as good as anything else:

    Bracquo: police drama.

  3. The Huns aren’t bothered that they are singing offensive and sectarian songs in 2013. They are bothered that they’ve been caught and received some publicity.

A few years ago when UEFA were on their case they asked fans to stop singing certain songs as it could lead to punishment. A club who wanted to move forward would ask fans to stop signing the songs as they offended people and they should grow up and move on.

The orange pound is important to the Huns survival.

  5. Parkhead etal,

Loads of great Celtic songs to sing and that in the main is what’s sung at Celtic Park in recent years, so a big well done to the Celtic support for that.

I do hope though that we don’t lose all our songs of old which are part of our identity, we know the ones to lose and which are acceptable ( I doubt any Irish songs would be acceptable to the Irish haters), anyway the particular songs that I’d like to see (hear) re introduced are the likes of the holy ground, wild rover and hail Gloria St Patrick.

No bus from Blackpool today so my spider sense tells me a low crowd, hopefully the Green Brigade will be loud and proud today and the Glasgow police decide to go catch criminals instead of antagonising our supporters for supporting CFC.

  8. West Wales Celt on

    Parkhead:

If Celtic is a football club, nothing more, nothing less then why does the tricolour fly over the ground, the club utilise an Irish connection in its commercial activities, why is the shamrock the badge?

The fact is that Celtic was founded as a club with Irish connections and most supporters embrace and cherish that link. Some, however, would like to restrict Celtic’s ‘Irishness’ to exclude republican sentiment. Regardless of the legitimacy or otherwise of such an objective, the practicalities prove very difficult (one person’s national anthem is another’s sectarian song) and lead to the apparent attempts to criminalise a flaboyant and committed element of the support.

Personally, Celtic is much more than simply a football club to me. I also don’t think whataboutery is combatted by appeasement (today the IRA, tomorrow the ‘offensive’ tricolour). The distinction between sectarianism and replicanism should not be conceded which is exactly, for me, what an appeasement strategy does do.

That said, I’m not advocating a songbook dominated by republican sentiment, simply a recognition of the right to sing political songs which are neither racist or sectarian.

There is a well established divide on the blog around this issue. Personally, I’ve long suggested the topic is avoided but I cannot but respond to comments implying Celtic is about football and nothing more.

Enjoy the game today and sing proud…

  9. Good Morning all from a bright & lovely Clonmel. Really looking forward to game today, would love to see Lenny playing a few fringe players, the team he sent out against Calley would do for me. Off to Mass shortly back on here pre-match. It didn’t happen last night but I just love when some guy on here quite innocently posts Good Night at circa 5.30 a.m. and a few minutes later another guy again quite innocently posts Good Morning.

  10. Slightly off topic and more to do with my own curiosity but can somebody explain why some of the posts include words that appear in green and underlined. I’ve only noticed this over the last week or so.

Did you watch Utopia, which recently finished on channel 4?

Well worth a watch if you like paranoid conspiracy type thrillers. Its more violent than a Tarrantino movie and at only 5 one hour episodes, wont take you long to get through.

    Please contact Sky regarding this.

Mr Colley offered 2 apologes almost immediately, he explaine the offensive tweet was to a personal freind and he didn’t mean to cause any offense. He also apologised to Celtic fans. He seemed quiet shocked by the response of Celtic fans and really sincere in his apology. I for one took it as an off the cuff response to a mate and didn’t feel offended by it.

It really depends how early you can get to the ground. You can park in the housing scheme that’s just across the new Clyde Gateway road from behind the superstore. You’d then have about 300m to the front of the main stand. I’ve only ever parked there at quiet games (CIS cup midweek games and the like) so not sure how early you’d need to be to get a space.
