Uefa, CAS, Brazil FA, Mitdjylland, Here we go again

239

We do love discovering an illegible player in a team that has ‘eliminated’ us from Europe.  Before we get too carried away, the rules were clear on Sion and on Legia Warsaw, but both matters came down to legal arguments carrying the room.  Uefa and CAS had the ability to find in favour of both of our opponents.

Mitdjylland’s fielding of Juninho, who still has a suspension to serve from his time in Brazil, is different in two respects.  Most importantly, it appears curious that a ban from a national association (Brazil) is applicable for games controlled by the regional union (in this case, Uefa).

The ban is referred to as “global” but that term is not particularly clear.  If the SFA ban a player, the ban is global in the respect that he cannot move territory and play without consequence.  Under normal circumstances, however, he can play in the next Uefa game despite still being subject to a global ban on playing in national tournaments.

It is more than possible that the message communicated by Uefa to Mitdjylland prior to their game against PSV last night was incorrect.  Mitdjylland and Uefa will doubtlessly be in touch with the Brazilian FA when they open this morning.  If, however, the ban extended to all games, Celtic were not eliminated from the Champions League.  That is our position.  Uefa, and if necessary CAS, will be asked to confirm this and make whatever arrangements necessary.  The awkwardness of Mitdjylland now having played one more round has no legal standing.

Delighted we signed a goalkeeper and a central midfielder.  James McCarthy would have been at Celtic in 2009 if then-manager, Tony Mowbray rated him, no other reason.  This was a spectacular oversight.  James has played very little football for five years.  He is an undoubted talent, if he remains fit, he will have a significant impact on our season.

Joe Hart is experienced enough to resolve many of the defensive problems we experienced last season and this.  He has something to prove; winning the league with Celtic is the perfect challenge.

Yes thought I was going daft for a moment. Of course you have to make a value judgement but there were many on here who had seen quite a bit of James at Hamilton and rated the boy highly – he was of course a snip at £1M.

    GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL @ 1:24 PM,

What a great shame it has come to this, you read something think that’s not right!? Then go to an old CQN or the Lazy Journalist to find the truth.

Some of us used to rely on CQNs every word.

Ironically it was Lenny who was in charge of the youths when we were chasing and lost out on McCarthy and a host of others.

Don’t disagree in principle with what you write – however Malmo looked vulnerable to constant pressure as ‘they’ tighten the press in the second-half – I was surprised ‘their’ goal did not come sooner. The screw will be turned from the start at Ibrox – ‘they’ have shown they’re good at that, in Europe, at home……sad to say!

Apparently Mitdjylland asked Sandy Bryson for advice and he told them ” You can’t be breaking the rules if you say you do not know the rules”

I saw that story this morning and I could not believe it had been allowed on a mainstream platform a copy and paste job straight from the pages of Follow Follow !

  8. The whole Mitdjylland issue could be very messy. I think UEFA will take the path of least resistance (for them) to sort it. Football is a very fickle business and we nearly had two brilliant outcomes yesterday, with the signings and huns with one foot out the door until the last few seconds. Still, it was a good day. Mccarthy, if he can stay fit, would surely be the best midfielder in Scotland? If Hart can be close to how he was, that is a great signing. I was very surprised that Hart signed for three years. That, plus a surely much lesser wage, says a lot about his desire for first team football again. I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve wondered about a Celtic minded class player coming here on a lesser amount, having already made a fortune. It never happens, apart from Roy Keane? Thus far, Hart has swiftly gone up in my estimations. Him and Mccarthy should add character, leadership and much needed physicality.

Yeah Chairbhoy, very true & damn tooting, our Club needs to wake up, be a lot more proactive & efficient, &

pay close attention to details, & appointments, & be more diligent in their research, in appointing the right

people, for the tasks which lays ahead, move with the times, stop trying to cut corners, & do things on the

cheap, which does not work. Pay pea nuts, then one will get monkeys in return, our transfers should be

carried out in January each Season, not @ the end of each Season, which does not give the new signings

time, to settle in to our style of play, & also by making signings & departures in January, we have a better

chance, of making in-roads into European Competitions, instead of falling @ the first hurdles, which is

really no surprise. Opportunity favours those who are prepared.

    Interesting and informed analysis Pablo.

    Respect.

Although (perhaps cynically) I always suspect the anachronistic bureaucracy’s desire to save face at all costs – even when faced with this pesky, modern transparency and accountability malarkey – is often a factor.

    Just as important for me.

Is someone at Celtic stirring the pot on our behalf?

Speaking of which – the link below was posted by another CQNer in previous article.

  11. So was he suspended when he played against us or suspended only after FIFA followed their procedures ?

That’s what it boils down to here.

Very little officially being said about this – you’d think UEFA could clear this up very quickly if the lad was Ok to play against us…

JHB, there are no easy ties, in European footy nowadys, one has to be well prepared, to face the challenges

which lays ahead, these matches can not be taken for granted, one has to earn the positive results gained,

& take one match @ a time, & also do proper & thorough research on ones opposition, find out their strengths & their weakness.

Delighted to have two senior pro’s in the door. HH Joe and James.

But what grounds do we have to really believe that an EPL player (still relatively prime) with much-gossiped fitness frailties – and not courted by top English sides as a freebie – will again flourish and remain robustly match-fit under the watchful eye of wur very ain sports science specialists? Especially in a league where hammer-throwers, light huns and full strengths can foul with referee-endorsed impunity??

Pray that James simply needs reg games to play his way into condition and pray it’s def 2x signings and not 1 and a half.

  22. !!Bada Bing!! on

quadrophenian- given McCarthy’s previous injuries, he will need to be ‘managed’ back to regular first team football, Soro and Shaw could fill in at times, and subbiing him when we are a couple of goals ahead in games.

  23. Bada

Who is going to score them, our forwards are misfiring, it needs sorted and with a few other options not presently on the staff.

  24. I see there was an assertion last night that a “project” player had to be a young player with some assessed potential to develop.

I wish you would all get together on this asserted “shared definition” because we had Chairbhoy disputing that Ajer was a “project” signing because he had already established with IK Start. With that reasoning, Calvin Miller was not a project because he had already been proclaimed “best player in the world” for his age group by Football Youth Talents website. Amido Balde, too, the archetypal Project in my mind , had 67 senior games under his belt in the Portuguese 2nd division, Spanish 3rd Division, Belgian top flight and Portuguese top flight. That was 13 more games than Ajer had had, solely in the Norwegian top flight, before rocking up at Celtic.

We also had Joe Hart and James McCarthy described as typical Lawwell bling signings so, again, it is hard to see much sharing in that definition.

The most common shared definition I see is the self-fulfilling one, i.e. anyone who breaks into the Celtic first team and holds down a place was not a Project signing, and anyone who fails to do this was a Lawwell Project signing, even Dorus De Vries.

I stand by my viewpoint, they are all projects until they succeed in getting into the team and holding down a place.

  25. !!Bada Bing!! on

DESSYBHOY- good question, I posted last night, if you drop Eddy, his value might drop as well, and makes you wonder what Ajeti is doing in training? I think we will go for Nisbet ,Hibs knocked back over £3 million from Birmingham in January……and given Petrie’s reluctance to deal with Celtic, could be a problem. HH

  26. AKBW1888 on 4TH AUGUST 2021 2:50 PM

It’s the only successful midgie repellant. Not designed for the purpose of keeping the little buggers at bay but but 100% successful by happy accidental circumstance. I think I’ll Email UEFA to send a crate of the stuff to Jutland.

  27. Re that Murdo Fraser article.

It’s interesting that he is pinning the Rangers administrators debacle on the SNP trying to get at Der Huns, and not the police and legal system trying to protect them.

In that case he will back an independent enquiry to get to the bottom of it.

  28. prestonpans bhoys on

and given Petrie’s reluctance to deal with Celtic

Probably more accurate to say Lawwell but is he behind the curtains😱
