Unproductive costs

775

Lewis Morgan has had a difficult shift this season.  The 23-year-old winger was used sparingly as a squad player before the concurrent absences of Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths and Bayo saw him drafted into the striker role against Rennes on 28th November.

Lewis scored a good goal that day but he is not a striker.  He made another four appearances in that position before Edouard’s return, which brought the experiment to an end.  He made 17 appearances in League One for Sunderland during the second half of last season.  In the Wembley play-off final, he was brought on as an early substitute, while Aiden McGeady remained on the bench, but his time in the North East was not particularly productive.

Now he is Going to Miami for talks with Inter (not that one), with the MLS side having agreed a fee with Celtic for his permanent transfer.

There are several things about our experience with Lewis Morgan I like.  Celtic scouts considered him the top talent in the Championship, a player with the potential to make the step up.  It is good that we sign players like this.

He was loaned back to St Mirren, then after six months at Lennoxtown, out to Sunderland.  He was given a chance in the qualifiers, then put through the striker turmoil, which gave Neil Lennon a chance to assess the player.

The player has a League Cup winner’s medal and a Wembley experience, things that he will be talking about for the rest of his life, and is likely to sign a contract to keep him in Florida for a few years.  He would have hoped to hold down a first team place at Celtic, but on balance, the move from St Mirren has worked out well for him.

We have difficulty keeping players who are outstandingly successful, but they usually leave a for fee that allows us to further strengthen.  What happens with players who do not make the grade is also important.  Getting them off the wage bill, for a fee and hopefully a profit, stops the budget from being clogged by unproductive costs, a problem we have discussed on these pages since the days of Martin.

  8. I’m not an EPL fan but each year I tend to take a bit of notice of the relegation battle rather than the top teams.

Watford had played 19 games & had 9 pts and were Bankers for relegation, but now have taken 13 points from past 5 games and are out of bottom 3. Extraordinary turn around ,

Anyhow enough of the nonsense, hope we get Polish Paddy over the line, ’twill relieve some of the tension.

I think it was correct to let Sincy & Morgan go, would like to see Hendry go as well.

Re Loans out if we do get a couple of Strikers, I’d like to see Griff go on loan to Hibs plus loans for O’Connor, Luca, Afolabi & Bayo.

Would welcome another more experienced Striker to complement Polish Paddy, a defensive powerhouse in midfield & a big strong commanding in the air centrehalf.

  9. That “influence ” thing again, eh!

    Dont get worked up….

What I am saying is this is not a time to do a tit for tat with huns. Also, I played against the bhoys

club at Barrowfield against players like John McCluskey, who Jock Stein took under his wing.

I just think there is more responsibility that CFC should take. Legally… they may argue..but if it was my child I would fight it.

Anyway.. you are entitled to your opinion apart from the reference to them.

After the game Troy Deeny when asked what was different in the coaching – his reply was – back to basics – keep it simple and more effort for 90mins.

Watford’s first goal came from Bournemouth playing tippy tappy with the keeper.

  12. Taking a wee break from podium chasing and lurking.

I don’t rate Boli. Decent going forward but not a winger or dependable defender.

Frimpong, let’s just dial it back a little, bright future but a little too light weight at the moment and would rather Elhamed was fit and well and in his place.

If we can get can Forster and Elyounoussi on deals and add a solid striker, defender and midfield battler I think we will do just fine. That said, I would like to see us change it up a little and figure out how to play two up front. I know we have a lot of others scoring outside of OE but I just think a team of our heritage should be a little more banging up front. If we had a foil for OE what could we do?

On the whole Christie thing. What did we expect? The idea that some are shocked is in itself a little shocking. I text my dad all through the games and just prior to the “brutal” assault on the throat cutter I told my dad Christie has to be careful. He was clearly tugging on jerseys at a couple of set pieces prior. I know they all do but he was in the box, tugging away and could have gifted thems a spot kick.

Showed a few yank friends the Cent and Moron incidents and they were pretty shocked and they know not the history of our beautiful Glasgow game. They asked we what fine they got and were surprised when I replied zilch. If it happened over here there would have been “Mothers Against Despicable Morelos” groups being formed asking us to think about the children. MADM..

Any road, pretty rank couple of performances recently against Stevie G’s Sevco but one swallow does not make a summer. Again, it’s the hope that will kill them. Still confident we’ll do the 10.

    HH!

Ps Not proud but Man City game on in background, Aguero now top foreign score in EPL overtaking Henry.

    You make sensible points.

There are a stack if cases, many at Thomsons Solicitors awaiting actioning.

Probably one case will used as a ‘proof’ against Celtic. This means if the court finds in favour of the plaintiff, it sets a precedent for all the others.

On the other hand, like the BBC and Savile, a list of compensation could be agreed, saving any court involvement.

Of course Celtic could be exonerated completely and all the claims would then fall, that would only transpire after a court case. In that event, the alleged victims would have to pursue the five infividuals already convicted, in civil actions.

Insurance will be involved of course, however the form and coverage at that time is not in the public domain.

It has been quiet on all fronts for a number of months, to imagine because of this it has all magically disappeared, is nonsense.

  20. From a Polish site:

” Patryk Klimala started preparations with Jagiellonia, but whether he will play in the colors of the Białystok team in spring, nobody knows it. The closest responses may be in Scotland, because after a good round, the 21-year-old striker caught the attention of other clubs, including Celtic Glasgow.

    Patryk Klimala

    ‹COME BACK

And that’s where today the most specific interest flows to the seven goalscorer in this league. The opponent for the striker of our youth team considered by the Scots is Andraž Šporar from Slovana Bratislava.

The price for Klimala has already been set: four million euros. This buyout amount was in his contract when he extended it with Jagiellonia in August 2018. The Białystok club avoids entering them into contracts, but it was then placed against the wall. Klimali remained at the expiration of the contract for a year, and if it had not been extended, in a few months he could tie up with another club, and Jagiellonia would care about taste. That is why CEO Cezary Kulesza agreed to the conditions set by the young attacker. At the time, it seemed that this amount would effectively deter potential buyers. Klimala has just returned from a loan to Wigry Suwałki, where he scored 13 goals, but it was still the first league.

The autumn explosion of the form caused that more and more scouts came to Bialystok to see what a young sniper he was shooting like that. In Jagiellonia they were aware of the growing interest in their player, which is why they urged Klimala to extend the contract on more favorable terms for him, but without the buyout amount, or possibly an increase. The player firmly replied that he wanted the current contract to be in force.

Today, nothing really depends on Jaga. If an interested person appears, pays four million euros to their account and communicates with Klimaa, only an accountant from Białystok can rub his hands. If the transaction took place, it would be the highest transfer in the history of Jagiellonia. Celtic was the first to quickly get to the point, but at some point he withdrew from the race for a representative of Polish youth. Seemingly! Our findings show that the Scots have come back to the game very strongly and it cannot be ruled out that they will finalize the transfer in their own way in the coming days.

Scottish champions are not the only ones who look at the attacker. FC Copenhagen has expressed interest in it before, and the Italian direction for the most effective youth league this season should not be missed.”

I particularly liked this bit …` The Białystok club avoids entering them into contracts, but it was then placed against the wall. `

What was the name of the Polish guy who used to post on here? I`m astounded of forehead that I can`t remember.

  21. I do hope someone is at it when they say we have won the race for a project striker at 3.5m

21 goals in his entire top career is enough to ask the boy to stay where he is

Ten in a row is not a project

  22. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

  23. SYDNEY TIM @ 19:17

Surely we can give a wee cheer if in fact we’ve signed him.

Remember Henryk cost £650k, Moussa was £500k – both were young unproven players.

If course we must do more, but let’s not pursue an all, or, nothing outlook – that’s self-defeating.

I agree that losing 9iar by default is unacceptable – it will be gut-wrenching and will have ramifications. It is however a possibility, let’s be honest about it.

  24. McNut. If we had a forward thinking CEO it would be a possibility

It is known that our scouting system and football department is sadly lacking depth and experience

Wasting our time this window on projects is not an option

Ten in a row is not a project

Once again we could bring in 3 or 4 players on 80k to 100k a week to get us over the line and ensure qualification for CL

It’s not a financial gamble as we have the cash

Every spare penny must be put into this

For every Henrik we signed ,we signed about 30 project strikers who have been duff. We can’t afford that now and have cash to sign proven strikers

  25. SID on 12TH JANUARY 2020 7:32 PM

I think its fair to suggest young Patrk is hardly whetting the appetite of Celtic supporters.

I don’t think it’s fair to suggest that at all.
