Unproductive costs

775

Lewis Morgan has had a difficult shift this season.  The 23-year-old winger was used sparingly as a squad player before the concurrent absences of Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths and Bayo saw him drafted into the striker role against Rennes on 28th November.

Lewis scored a good goal that day but he is not a striker.  He made another four appearances in that position before Edouard’s return, which brought the experiment to an end.  He made 17 appearances in League One for Sunderland during the second half of last season.  In the Wembley play-off final, he was brought on as an early substitute, while Aiden McGeady remained on the bench, but his time in the North East was not particularly productive.

Now he is Going to Miami for talks with Inter (not that one), with the MLS side having agreed a fee with Celtic for his permanent transfer.

There are several things about our experience with Lewis Morgan I like.  Celtic scouts considered him the top talent in the Championship, a player with the potential to make the step up.  It is good that we sign players like this.

He was loaned back to St Mirren, then after six months at Lennoxtown, out to Sunderland.  He was given a chance in the qualifiers, then put through the striker turmoil, which gave Neil Lennon a chance to assess the player.

The player has a League Cup winner’s medal and a Wembley experience, things that he will be talking about for the rest of his life, and is likely to sign a contract to keep him in Florida for a few years.  He would have hoped to hold down a first team place at Celtic, but on balance, the move from St Mirren has worked out well for him.

We have difficulty keeping players who are outstandingly successful, but they usually leave a for fee that allows us to further strengthen.  What happens with players who do not make the grade is also important.  Getting them off the wage bill, for a fee and hopefully a profit, stops the budget from being clogged by unproductive costs, a problem we have discussed on these pages since the days of Martin.

No my friend, not saying that, merely observing that the salaries of two players, one already gone, could be better utilised.

No doubt there is some fat that could/should be trimmed, however the squad needs new players regardless of who leaves.

The exact free figure in the bank is a matter of guesswork, as is the what some of it may be earmarked for. I did notice that the hotel project seems to be off and the Barrowfield upgrade on. Then there is expenditure for the now professional womens’ team.

I think the historical Boys Club scenario has to be played out – who knows what the insurance arrangements were at the time the events took place. If we are legally tied to the perpetrators and victims, it will be costly.

  2. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

And there we have McNuts sole purpose for joining this site, to promote lies and spread confusion. There is no legal connection this is already determined, the culprit never worked for the club nor did his organisation. Did I miss something

  3. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

And I had him down as a board troll, at least I got the troll bit right

  4. McNut. There was 36m. We spent 11.6 and then banked KT money

We could get 4 players in on 100k a year to smash 10 in a row and qualify for CL with no fear of going into debt

However why would PL gamble. That money in the bank ensures his bonus paid

  5. Again a thank you to those wishing me well about my poor health.

I am not too concerned about the Two Heart Attacks recently or the Surgery involved , as my understanding is that the surgery should make me feel better etc….however its the thought of waking up one morning and yet again my Blood count becomes dangerously low, as it was back in Nov/Dec 2019 ?

    …………..

Thanks for your good wishes and kind words, and the “Tip” about the You Tube show called CU BURN. I will certainly have a look for it.

    ……………

    31003,

Thanks for your info, maybe I will also watch the Monitor…then again maybe not LOL ?

    ……………………..

I know that CQN has claimed the that Ref Clancy and his Assistants did NOT see the incident with Christie and Morelos, so Celtic SHOULD have been asking ” WHY did the Ref award a free Kick, if no official saw anything” ?

IF CQN is wrong, and Ref Clancy and/or his assistants DID indeed see it, and Ryans “Defence” was that due to the Ref awarding that Free Kick, then the Ref HAS dealt with the incident, so it should NEVER have been Cited and brought to the attention of the Compliance Officer just like all the Morelos assaults in December 2018 at Ibrox ? That was the “Explanation” that was given to Celtic and the Media after Dec 2018, when they claimed the Ref Beaton had deemed all incidents with Morelos to be okay and “dealt with” ?

IF Celtic had a Representative with Ryan at the Appeal/Compliance Officer, then He/She has FAILED to ask the RELEVANT Questions to that “Panel”, in other words, he/she has let Ryan Christie down, and Celtic have sold the Bhoy down the river !

IF Ryans so called “Grab” is deemed to be “Brutal” by ANY Members of that “Panel”, the assaults carried out by the Hun Goalie McGregor since last season SHOULD also have been brought in/used as further evidence, to define the description of “Brutal”…as well as the assaults carried out by Morelos in Dec 2018….and ALL the other video evidence of assaults on KT, Hayes and Christie in recent seasons ?

NO ONE who is “Right Minded” can possibly view Ryans “Grab” as being MORE “brutal” than the other examples mentioned above…..

So it begs the questions….Why is Ryan Christie being Branded a “Brute”…while others have NOT ?

WHY ( to the best of my knowledge), has NO OTHER player in Scottish Football ever been Branded as a “Brute” in the past ?

IF Celtic did “Represent” Ryan at that Appeal…they have FAILED to Act in the best interests of an Employee, and WHERE was The Players Union in all of this ?

One of their Members has now been Branded a “Brute”….what are they doing about it ?

  6. Good morning CQN from a surprisingly calm but damp Garngad

On reading back there is a few Steve Austins on here (million dollar man, we can rebuild him) remember that??? I used to watch that and think bionic arms and legs, fantasy stuff. Someone knew there stuff.😂

Anyway God bless to all Celtic Supporters especially anyone who is going through a bad patch.🙏

Regarding the clubs bank balance why are we stock piling cash, is it to enable large shareholders to sell shares easily as a good going concern? Is something happening that we don’t know about?

    Paranoidcsc

  7. SYDNEY TIM @ 05:42

I don’t know what the ‘free’ bank balance is at this moment, however it will be a decent figure….and yes some it must be used in this window to add to the squad. Anyone added must be first-team ready.

Do you mean £100k/week, not per year – that’s Aberdeen wages. Of course we would never pay that amount (£100k/week), it would not fit with our model, however we do have wherewithal to spend £20k/£30/week, on 2/3 players, if the upfront fees are right.

I shouldn’t think that PL’s salary is based on the bank balance alone, however none of us have seen his contract.

Apart from getting players in, we must develop a better style of play. The boast used to be that no Ibrox player would get into our team; at the moment probably due the rigid 433 Liverpool-style they play, probably only Scott Brown would get into theirs’.

  8. DAVID66 @ 07:33

“Is there something happening we don’t know about?”

    —————-

I have felt over the last year that there was something brewing in the background. Let’s hope it’s something good.

We will leave this current Scottish set-up that we’re in – it’s onky a matter of when – pethaps that is the driver of a ‘changing of the guard’.

Anyway, more pressing is to get ourselves sorted out in January. There is much to do if we want 9iar – the challenge is real.

  9. BIG JIMMY

That’s a very good point that I haven’t seen made elsewhere. Do you know the exact time in the game that the ‘foul’ happened so I can have a look myself? I don’t have the heart to watch the whole game again!

  10. McNutt Our business model should be putting every spare pence we can afford to get to ten in a row

We are football club. Not some PLC

We have run up about 50m pounds in cash reserves and we can’t spend it due to our business model of PL controlling everything

If we lose league and have over 40m in bank. Who will you blame

Ps one of PL just is cash in bank

He gets a bonus for not spending money

  11. McNut – I hope the cash in the bank is for rainy days like this window.

We need quality in depth 2 x ready made proven professionals with a bit of experience to see us over the line. We have a good squad that only needs tweaked. Lenny also has to learn by his mistakes as in the last 2 games against Sevco we have been swamped in the middle of the park, we need to pack it out with hard working and 1 or 2 players who are willing to do the Broonie stuff.

We do not need major surgery on this team/squad.

That is why for me and my Celtic pals it’s frustrating bringing in projects constantly and I know that’s our overall business model, but sometimes, just sometimes to progress you have to do something differently. All IMO of course.

    1 cup in the bank

    Going for 9 IAR

    10 trophy’s on the trot

Going for an unprecedented quadruple treble

A squad that just needs tweaked

    Loads of cash in bank

    Loads of good assets (players)

Why would anyone gamble with winning the league, spend some cash and get out of sight.

I know it’s not guaranteed that spending cash guarantees success but it gives you an advantage over any rivals. I am also aware that there is plenty of time left in this window to do business and what do you really get in January? So if needs be bring in experienced Hardened professional Loanees to get the 9 and start planning now for summer as well.

  13. This is a Copy of an Email that I have sent to the Office of The Scottish Players Union this morning…I wont be holding my breath for any satisfactory response…..

Dear Sirs, I am a Celtic Supporter and I am acting on behalf of many other Celtic Supporters in relation to this issue.

Can you please advise IF The Players Union were present or indeed play any part in the most recent case involving Celtic’s FC’s Ryan Christie, when he was “Cited” to the Compliance Officer, for his part in an incident involving himself in a Match v Rangers on December 29th 2019, at Celtic Park ?

It is my understanding that Mr Christie was “Represented” at said Hearing by his Employer, Celtic FC ? The “Ruling” of The Compliance Team was that Mr Christie was Guilty of indulging in behaviour that was considered to be “Brutal”, by Two of the Three Panel Members, and given a Three Match Ban.

We Celtic Supporters are very concerned that Mr Christie has now been “Branded” as a “Brute”, and can you please also confirm whether ANY other Player in the history of Scottish Football has ever been “likewise ” Branded” ? If not, why has Mr Christie (who I only assume is a Member of The Players Union), being singled out and labelled a “Brute” ?

Assuming that Mr Christie is a Member of The Players Union, what has your Office undertaken to support Mr Christie before/during and/or after this “Hearing/Ruling” by The Compliance Officers Team ? I am 64 years of age, and followed Scottish Football for almost 60 of those years, and I can not recall any other Player being branded as a “Brute” ? I am certain that your Office is aware of the “incident involving Mr Christie and Mr Morelos of Rangers FC on December 29th 2019, so I will refrain from going over all details etc however, many Celtic Supports like myself are shocked and mystified by the Compliance Officers Ruling, and the gross inconsistency of The Compliance Officers Team in relation to numerous other “incidents” involving players not in the employ of Celtic FC in the past or present ? IF the Referee Mr Clancy and/or his assistants DID view the incident, then Mr Clancy “dealt with” it by awarding Rangers FC a Free Kick ? This was the very same “Explanation” that was provided to Celtic FC and the Media following the game between Rangers V Celtic at Ibrox in December 2018, by The SFA/SPL, who claimed that on that day, the Referee, Mr Beaton had seen ALL incidents involving a Rangers player Mr Morelos, and deemed those incidents to be “legal” under the rules. Mr Clancy IF indeed saw the recent incident on December 2019, then “he too” deemed Mr Christies challenge to be nothing more than a Foul, and the Free Kick was duly awarded, so therefore like Mr Beaton a year earlier, Mr Clancy had “dealt with it”, so why was your Member Mr Christie “Cited” ?

Also, IF Mr Clancy and his assistants did NOT see the incident involving Mr Christie and Mr Morelos on December 29th 2019, why then did the Ref Clancy award a Free Kick to Rangers ? The Compliance Officer/Team can NOT claim that Ref Clancy and his Assistants FAILED to see the incident, as the reason why Mr Christie was “Cited”, due to the FACT that Ref Clancy DID award a Free Kick against Mr Christie, or have Referees and their Assistants been instructed to make decisions, award Free Kicks etc for incidents that they do NOT see ? In recent seasons we have had several Celtic FC players seriously assaulted on the pitch involving Keirnan Tierney, Jonny Hayes and Ryan Christie himself, who were indeed victims of “Brutal” Assaults from their opponents in different Matches, and yet NONE of those Assaults/Incidents were ever deemed as “Brutal” by The SFA/SPL or indeed Referees. Any Fair and Right Minded person would never take the view that Mr Christies actions ( accidental or otherwise) on December 2019 at Celtic Park as being “Brutal” ?

Likewise we have all seen on at least THREE separate occasions in three separate matches Allan McGregor of Rangers FC in recent times, commit “Acts of Thuggery ” directed at opponents, and yet all those “Acts of Thuggery” were NOT deemed as being “Brutal” despite the overwhelming video evidence available ?

So again I ask, why has Ryan Christie been singled out and deemed to be a “Brute” by The Compliance officers Team, and IF Mr Christie is indeed a Member of The Players Union, what has your Office done to support one of your Members ? If your Office was NOT involved and/or represented Mr Christie at the recent Hearing, again I have to ask…IF Mr Christie is a Member o0f the Players Union then, Why not ?

IF Mr Christie is a Member of The Players Union and he wasnt represented by the Union at the Hearing, does your Office have any plans to take this disgraceful matter forward, as again it appears that one of your Members has been Branded a “Brute” by The Compliance Officers Team, which is a disgraceful stain on that young mans character for evermore ?

I also have to consider whether The Players Union decided that Mr Christie did indeed have a case to answer, and that would explain why the Players Union were not involved ? Can your Office please confirm all matters and questions that I have raised asap ?

How’s it gawn big mhan I’m sure you will make it through Wednesday and life will pick up very quickly afterwards. After reading your long post I assume there’s nothing wrong with your fingers anyway.

Regards ball grabbing and it’s brutality Morelos had no case to answer according to the powers that be. But what about Steven Mc Lean of Hearts ball grab on Eboue Kouassi also missed by the ref (willie collum). Mc Lean was given a 2 game retospective ban nothing ever reported about that incident being brutal to my recollection. So when is a ball grab deemed to be brutal, is it when you do it deliberately like Mc Lean or when you do it accidentally in the process of trying to stop and turn quickly like Ryan. Or is it if you do it to someone wearing hoops it’s not in anyway brutal. But if you are wearing hoops it is brutal.

  21. TONY ROME & Others…..

I have just sent a 2nd email to the Players Union for their consideration….

    Dear Sirs,

My apologises as I meant to add yet another example by The Compliance Officers Team when deeming Ryan Christie of Celtic FC’s behaviour on December 29th as being “Brutal”, and I would ask your Office to included this further example when considering my original email this morning ( Sunday 12th Jan. 2020), should your Office wish to respond and/or indeed take matters up on behalf of Mr Christie, following the shameful and disgraceful decision to “Brand” Mr Christie as a “Brute” ?

In season 2018/2019, during a match at Celtic Park, with Celtic and Hearts FC, a Hearts player ( Steven McLean), quite clearly and deliberately while play was stopped, grabbed Celtic’s Kousassi by the Groin, while players were waiting delivery of a corner or free kick. This “Brutal” behaviour was missed by all the officials including Mr William Collum who was the Referee. Subsequently, Mr McLean of Hearts was indeed “Cited” by The Compliance Officer and was given a Two Match Ban. To the best of my recollection, the Compliance Officer/Team did NOT brand Mr McLeans behaviour as being “Brutal”, despite the overwhelming video evidence available.

Will your Office ( if Mr Ryan Christie is a Member of the Players Union ?), take up this argument to the Compliance Officer/Team to underline the gross inconsistencies in their decision making when banning Mr Christie for THREE Matches ( not Two like Mr McLean), and requesting that The Compliance Officer/Team remove/back track on their so called “explanation that Mr Christies behaviour on December 29th 2019, being deemed as “Brutal” , and also lessen the proposed three game ban imposed on Mr Christie ?

    Thank you.

Only last year, Weah and Burke gave us a massive kick-start, both psychologically and in terms of getting the best out of the players already there. Neither turned out to be a hit long-term, but we reaped the benefit of that initial lift.

We need a similar lift again and also need at least one really good striker, as we will probably lose Edouard by the summer. I don’t have any names, but most on here agree that a few quality signings are required. I’m sorry to say, we’re moving at our usual sloth-like pace.

  26. Indeed. Hard to say definitively buy IMO last year’s loan signings were crucial in us winning the league.

  27. DAVID66 @ 08:07

Agree with you, except I’m looking for three in – centre-back, centre-forward & defensive midfielder.

The squad doesn’t need a major overhaul, however we need a playing system ‘nailed down’ – Gerrard has highlighted our coaching deficiencies

‘They’ are settled in their Liverpool 433 style. They will replace current players probably one at a time if someone better in their position becomes available. Probably Davis, Jack, Arfield & Kamara will in turn be ‘upgraded’, but that will be in the future – they are settled for now.

Their squad is thin and they will struggle with injuries, but they have been lucky there, unlike us.

They will probably spring a surprise loan signing before the window shuts, it could be from Liverpool.

This is our first real challenge for nine years – failure will have bad consequences.

  28. BIG JIMMY

Good luck on Wednesday and with getting a reply to your e-mail , meanwhile in another universe sevco beat ” Uzbeki Cracks ” 6-1 !

Ryan got a 2 game ban and an extra game for being redded vs Livi this season. I don’t know when the ‘brutality’ test came in, how it is defined. used to be ‘violent’ to add extra games to a ban
