Unproductive costs

Lewis Morgan has had a difficult shift this season.  The 23-year-old winger was used sparingly as a squad player before the concurrent absences of Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths and Bayo saw him drafted into the striker role against Rennes on 28th November.

Lewis scored a good goal that day but he is not a striker.  He made another four appearances in that position before Edouard’s return, which brought the experiment to an end.  He made 17 appearances in League One for Sunderland during the second half of last season.  In the Wembley play-off final, he was brought on as an early substitute, while Aiden McGeady remained on the bench, but his time in the North East was not particularly productive.

Now he is Going to Miami for talks with Inter (not that one), with the MLS side having agreed a fee with Celtic for his permanent transfer.

There are several things about our experience with Lewis Morgan I like.  Celtic scouts considered him the top talent in the Championship, a player with the potential to make the step up.  It is good that we sign players like this.

He was loaned back to St Mirren, then after six months at Lennoxtown, out to Sunderland.  He was given a chance in the qualifiers, then put through the striker turmoil, which gave Neil Lennon a chance to assess the player.

The player has a League Cup winner’s medal and a Wembley experience, things that he will be talking about for the rest of his life, and is likely to sign a contract to keep him in Florida for a few years.  He would have hoped to hold down a first team place at Celtic, but on balance, the move from St Mirren has worked out well for him.

We have difficulty keeping players who are outstandingly successful, but they usually leave a for fee that allows us to further strengthen.  What happens with players who do not make the grade is also important.  Getting them off the wage bill, for a fee and hopefully a profit, stops the budget from being clogged by unproductive costs, a problem we have discussed on these pages since the days of Martin.

  1. According to our website we have 13 first team midfielders signed and available, not counting players out on loan.

How many are a waste of money, or a complete waste of money?

Is no one accountable at the club for this unnecessary waste of money?

  2. jimmy, im sure cannon Riley, father Fitzsimmons and mr Madill will be looking down, good luck on wednesday :)

I think the historical Boys Club scenario has to be played out – who knows what the insurance arrangements were at the time the events took place. If we are legally tied to the perpetrators and victims, it will be costly.

And there we have McNuts sole purpose for joining this site, to promote lies and spread confusion. There is no legal connection this is already determined, the culprit never worked for the club nor did his organisation. Did I miss something

  8. Is that boy going straight into the team? If not he’s no good to us for what will no doubt be a frenetic second half of the season.

Transfer markt has him valued at £450.000, same as Cosgrove at Aberdeen (I know)

The Aberdeen player has scored 19 goals in half a season already, why wouldn’t he score plenty for us?

Cheers. Just watched a video of him. Looks like a a pacy player who likes to play on the shoulder if the last defender. CF was/is the most critical area we needed to strengthen this window imo, glad to see moves being made.

  13. TONYROME,

Until I became unwell I would often bump into WEE EDDIE in my local and we would have a couple of beers and chat. I havent seen him since probably August, for obvious reasons cos I havent been out very much.

As for me having “Tenacity” ? My Two Ex Wives and a few other wummin, called it something else….STUBBORNNESS ! LOL.

You have me at a disadvantage, obviously you know some of my background from when I was just a Bhoy. My Parish and Secondary School, unless of course you somehow remember what I may have posted in the past LOL ?

    ……………..

Hopefully great news about the new striker, if we have managed to land him ? We will need the new Bhoy up and running asap, and hopefully he’s the finished article ?

I also hope that we now START with TWO Strikers, Eddie and Paddy, and they fully compliment each other straight away by banging in the goals !

    Philbhoy,

He stopped answering me when I caught him trying his revisionist pish about his claim people were blaming the board for the Hun result, no one blamed them for that, they were blamed for their capitulation to the SFA cheating on punishing only Celtic players.

To be honest I actually prefer not to have discourse with such a weasel.

Encouraged to see increasing levels of anti board sentiment on many forums over recent weeks. It appears to be driven by an awareness of the exorbitant pay packages being extracted by Lawwell and Bankier coupled with the realisation that they are not prepared to defend the Club, players and supporters. Let’s be clear, the only thing that Lawwell and Bankier are prepared to defend is their outrageous levels of remuneration and their generous perks – e.g. expense accounts, free hospitality and free match tickets.

Interesting to note that during the year ended June 19, only 7 Board meetings were held. Did this include the unscheduled meeting in the Hampden stand following the final whistle in the Cup final? For comparative purposes during the year ended June 05 (Lawwell’s first full year as CEO) 14 Board meetings were held. The well respected Brian Quinn was Chairman then and was paid £30,000. Bankier is now receiving £80,000.
