Untenable position for SFA president as drama unfolds

917

Campbell Ogilvie’s appointment as president of the SFA was always controversial.  As general secretary and director of Rangers, Ogilvie was the club’s chief administrator during the final 11-year period they refused to employ Catholic footballers.  In many other walks of life, this background would make him an embarrassing relic of a former era, but in Scottish football it was enough to see him promoted to the ultimate honour position.

He remained in position at Rangers long after the new regime of Sir David Murray arrived and set aside the decades-old sectarian employment policy but left the club in 2005, joining Hearts as operations director two months later.  All of this puts the SFA president in central position regarding the on-going tax tribunal, which is charged with deciding if Rangers illegally evaded tax from a period starting in 2000 and going on well beyond Ogilvie’s departure.

If the First Tier Tribunal finds against Rangers the SFA must ask for Ogilvie’s immediate resignation.  The association cannot have a president embroiled in a tax evasion scam which, even before a verdict has been decided, has already caused untold harm to his former club and the reputation Scottish football.  The scale of the damage to public finances has yet to be definitively established but it will not make good reading.

The SFA has just embarked on its first proper investigation into whether directors of a football club, in this instance Rangers, are fit and proper persons to hold such a position.  Office holders at the association cannot exercise power over the game if they are not subject to the same standards they demand from clubs.  Pending this investigation, and the outcome of the tax tribunal, Ogilvie should temporarily step aside.  Scotland is not yet a banana republic, public bodies must have robust ethics and must not allow the shadow of contagion to be cast over the body charged with ensuring legal and moral standards are adhered to.

The SFA has some enormously important months ahead.  Its president is currently in a position to influence which course it takes and, if the tribunal verdict falls against Rangers, could be implicated in the scandal which precipitated the crisis.  While I am sure Campbell Ogilvie will be shown to have acted with impeccable ethical standards, the SFA must quickly establish a structure clear of contagion.

    I think Rangers run at a £10 million loss when they don’t pay any tax :-)

    With only half of the season ticket money available for the next four seasons, where’s the cash coming from to pay their bills, Newco or no newco?

  3. Unbelievable.

    Rumours that the only security Ticketus have is against the WhyteCo whose only asset is holdings in Rangers.

    And at the same time Mr Wholly Unreliable is offering shares to fans. What, the shares not already hocked to Ticketus? Does anybody believe a word this weasel utters?

    PS Watched the documentary last night. Staggering stuff but not just from Whyte, from the likes of Speirs ‘I saw it all along’ kind of baloney.

  4. Look at this poor wee scone from FF:

    OK, he told a lie or two Business men do that on a daily basis but with Rangers, you are going to be found out in a very public way.

    He has never dealt with such a worldwide, public, famous business as Rangers FC.

    He probably thought he was only dealing with common working fans who are stupid in his eyes.

    But at least we know the situation now with the £9 million tax and the Ticketus deal.

    And, he still hasn’t done anything wrong legally. He lied to us, but legally for Rangers, done nothing wrong.

    He took a better option with the ticketus and having done that, he should have paid Lloyds himself as origionally promised he would do and paid the £9 million tax.

    Not defending the **** for his lies. We all knew he was in it for a quick buck and he is doing that. Hate him for putting us into admin. It may have happened anyway as he says but it’s done now. So lets see what the next future chairmen do for the club and if they are willing to put money where thier mouths are.

    They were not showing interest with the tax case in the background, and you have to say, Whyte did.

    Yes a quick deal and probably a nice wee profit for him but if it gets us moving forward instead of backwards then I’m all for it.

    When it comes to adminstering a football club Gordon Smith is a poor last to Martin Bain. CW has made some poor calls and removing Bain rather than getting him in the tent was one of them.

  6. BlantyreKev - Parcel=> on

    “My corporate advisors came to me with the proposition that it was entirely possible, as well as highly beneficial, to negotiate a deal with Ticketus that would allow us to complete the takeover and maximise working capital for the club’s day-to-day business.”

    ‘It also has to be remembered that this was not me working alone and in isolation. I hired top-rate corporate, financial, legal and tax specialists to guide me through this process and when you’re paying for that kind of advice, it would be daft not to follow it.’

    Dynamite. Absolute Dynamite.

    Step forward adviser number one, David Grier, partner in Duff and Phelps.

  7. Can Craig Whyte return to watch his ahem beloved gers

    Whytes a f*****g dead man !

  8. The only way I can keep any perspective on this is to imagine US in the same position.

    If Celtic owed more than 50million to the tax man, would I think there might be even a remote possibility that the taxman would go easy on us in return for shares being gifted to the fans? Not on your nelly.

  9. Another wee scone :

    I’m not in the know but I think he has done what he said he would. I think he has got himself and Rangers into the best possible position now (based on where we have come from). I think he is still a major player in this whole thing and I think the HMRC thought they could force his arm (as they did with Murray and AJ) but he is an expert at putting money in other places with deals on the fringe of legality and that is why he is a millionaire.

    I think he has done this in the best interest of Rangers (his team that he supports and loves). By the looks of it most others on here think he has done it for his own good.

    I can see how this works in Rangers favour. I fail to see any way at all that Craig Whyte can come out of this personally with more that the pound he invested.

    This is a very convoluted route to liquidation considering he could have went the voluntary liquidation route and been in Barbados by now. But then that would have been walking away – and we don’t do that.

  10. BlantyreKev - Parcel=> on

    ‘I am open to all serious offers of outside investment. Indeed, I am currently in active discussion with a number of potential bidders and investors. However, the reality is that every one of needs to have a final settlement of the big tax case one way or another.’

    Really Craig? Haven’t Adminstrators been appointed by the Court?

    Oh dear.

  11. Hi…lurk often, post not so but want to tonight.

    A few months ago we were beaten by Hearts. Rangers’ lead looked unassailable, our players were going through the motions and our boss didn’t seem to know which way to turn. I started to question the decision to put a rookie in charge of such a high profile job and started to wonder if we should think with our heads and not hearts. It was time to take Lenny out of the firing line and bring in someone who could take us forward. Cue the predictable comments and accusations of me being a “hun”.

    I said at the time that I was no hun, would back the team when at Celtic Park but exercise my right on a forum to air my opinion that Lennon was not the man for the job. I said that nothing would make me happier than to be proved wrong and some dared me to show my (cyber) face on here if I was.

    Well here I am. As wrong as anything, delighted that Lenny will be lifting the SPL trophy and am glad I’m not the one making the decisions. Being wrong has never felt so good although I’ll be trading my humble pie for some jelly and ice-cream ;)

  12. BlantyreKev - Parcel=> on

    ‘But I am a Rangers fan, and, like other Rangers fans I don’t do walking way [sic].”

    Phonetically that is absolutely hilarious!! [not sic. Not at all. Totally lovin’ it, actually]

  15. Auldheid – you wouldn’t trust Duffield to administer a jumble sale. Unconfirmed reports that he spent his working days at the SFA split between reading the Rangers News and Wigs Weekly. That was until the unfortunate turn of events with his parents…..I wonder how their health is doing these days?
