Untenable position for SFA president as drama unfolds

917

Campbell Ogilvie’s appointment as president of the SFA was always controversial.  As general secretary and director of Rangers, Ogilvie was the club’s chief administrator during the final 11-year period they refused to employ Catholic footballers.  In many other walks of life, this background would make him an embarrassing relic of a former era, but in Scottish football it was enough to see him promoted to the ultimate honour position.

He remained in position at Rangers long after the new regime of Sir David Murray arrived and set aside the decades-old sectarian employment policy but left the club in 2005, joining Hearts as operations director two months later.  All of this puts the SFA president in central position regarding the on-going tax tribunal, which is charged with deciding if Rangers illegally evaded tax from a period starting in 2000 and going on well beyond Ogilvie’s departure.

If the First Tier Tribunal finds against Rangers the SFA must ask for Ogilvie’s immediate resignation.  The association cannot have a president embroiled in a tax evasion scam which, even before a verdict has been decided, has already caused untold harm to his former club and the reputation Scottish football.  The scale of the damage to public finances has yet to be definitively established but it will not make good reading.

The SFA has just embarked on its first proper investigation into whether directors of a football club, in this instance Rangers, are fit and proper persons to hold such a position.  Office holders at the association cannot exercise power over the game if they are not subject to the same standards they demand from clubs.  Pending this investigation, and the outcome of the tax tribunal, Ogilvie should temporarily step aside.  Scotland is not yet a banana republic, public bodies must have robust ethics and must not allow the shadow of contagion to be cast over the body charged with ensuring legal and moral standards are adhered to.

The SFA has some enormously important months ahead.  Its president is currently in a position to influence which course it takes and, if the tribunal verdict falls against Rangers, could be implicated in the scandal which precipitated the crisis.  While I am sure Campbell Ogilvie will be shown to have acted with impeccable ethical standards, the SFA must quickly establish a structure clear of contagion.

  4. Brian Kennedy certainly knows how run a football club. Just ask Stockport. He bougjt them as he wanted their ground for rugby.

Former Stockport County chairman Brendan Elwood admits that he now regrets selling the club to Sale Sharks owner Brian Kennedy.

Elwood sold County in the summer of 2003, when Sale moved to Edgeley Park.

But County are now in a sad plight, in danger of a second successive relegation, after winning just 10 league games in two seasons.

“I wish I’d never met Mr Kennedy, I wish I’d never sold it to him,” Elwood told BBC Radio Manchester.

“The deal I did with Mr Kennedy, which I thought would be the best deal for the football club and the town, unfortunately hasn’t been the case.

“I wish I had advertised it and found a consortium of local businessmen with the financial means to take it forward.”

After two years in charge, Kennedy did a deal with the Stockport County’s Supporters’ Trust in 2005 to take over the football club from Cheshire Sport, the company set up to run both County and Sale.

And the club enjoyed success in 2008 when, under Jim Gannon, County went back up to the third tier of English football via the play-offs.

But Stockport have fallen on hard times again, getting relegated after spending the whole of last season in administration.

The 2015 consortium, consisting of local business people, took over in the summer, bringing the club out of administration.

But results have continued to be poor, culminating in manager Paul Simpson’s sacking on 4 January.

And they now stand 20th in the League Two table, just two points clear of danger, and fearful of going down to the Conference.

“It’s a terrible situation,” said Elwood. “I feel sorry for the present consortium.

“I really am so gutted and desperately disappointed that the football club could get in this position.

“The problems started when Mr Kennedy, for some reason, gave the club to the supporters’ trust, people who had no experience and no money.

“I’m very, very despondent. I don’t think anyone will come in and invest any money in Stockport County as they’ve got no assets or nothing to guarantees any investment.

“I feel it’s only a matter of time before the football club disappears completely.

It is normal the 2012 refers to he copyright not the company – you can see it on the bottom of the BBC site.

The site maybe owned by R@ngers Group therefore that is the reason they haven’t put up RFC in administration.

    13 September 2011

    13 Feb 2012

“Rangers costs approximately £45 million per year to operate and commands around £35 million in revenue.”

Now I’m not an accountant but even I can see that’s £10m shortfall.

    21 Feb 2012

“The fact is that Rangers, had they not gone administration now for the reasons I have given, would have done so some time in the future whoever the owner was because they could not go on funding losses of up to £15 million a year

Ok, so in a short period of time, they have gone from needing to find £6m savings per year to £15m. Wow.

  19. James Forrest is The Emperor of Ice Cream on

The ice cream just keeps on coming. Whytey now admits it, yes he is admitting it, that he bought the club only after selling assets owned by it that he wasn’t in a legal position to sell … he admits he’s invested precisely one pound, but hey, not to worry … he’s also said the Ticketus deal is underwritten by his “personal corporate guarantee.” That must cheer Rangers fans up, eah?

What else? …Oh yes, he offered to pay this year’s tax arrears of £9 million at £500,000 a month and HMRC said no. Odd, that. He also offered them £2.5 million a year to make the Big Tax Case go away. They turned him down. I wonder why?

It is clear to me that Rangers is in the hands of a man who is one of three things:

    1) A certifiable lunatic. Not a deal breaker. AC Milan has been run by one of those for a long, long time … but then he is a wealthy one. Maybe a deal breaker after all ….

    2) A con-man. Eeek. Not good. Especially in light of revelations today which say he’s paid a million in fees etc to his mates since taking over ….

    3) A Celtic fan of incalculable genius, who found a way to destroy their reputation, credit rating, rip off their fans and shame the press for the princely sum of £1 … a genius of those proportions surely deserves his own statue outside Bairds.

Rangers fans, what a man you have at the helm. I salute his courage, his strength and his indefatigability.
