Campbell Ogilvie’s appointment as president of the SFA was always controversial. As general secretary and director of Rangers, Ogilvie was the club’s chief administrator during the final 11-year period they refused to employ Catholic footballers. In many other walks of life, this background would make him an embarrassing relic of a former era, but in Scottish football it was enough to see him promoted to the ultimate honour position.
He remained in position at Rangers long after the new regime of Sir David Murray arrived and set aside the decades-old sectarian employment policy but left the club in 2005, joining Hearts as operations director two months later. All of this puts the SFA president in central position regarding the on-going tax tribunal, which is charged with deciding if Rangers illegally evaded tax from a period starting in 2000 and going on well beyond Ogilvie’s departure.
If the First Tier Tribunal finds against Rangers the SFA must ask for Ogilvie’s immediate resignation. The association cannot have a president embroiled in a tax evasion scam which, even before a verdict has been decided, has already caused untold harm to his former club and the reputation Scottish football. The scale of the damage to public finances has yet to be definitively established but it will not make good reading.
The SFA has just embarked on its first proper investigation into whether directors of a football club, in this instance Rangers, are fit and proper persons to hold such a position. Office holders at the association cannot exercise power over the game if they are not subject to the same standards they demand from clubs. Pending this investigation, and the outcome of the tax tribunal, Ogilvie should temporarily step aside. Scotland is not yet a banana republic, public bodies must have robust ethics and must not allow the shadow of contagion to be cast over the body charged with ensuring legal and moral standards are adhered to.
The SFA has some enormously important months ahead. Its president is currently in a position to influence which course it takes and, if the tribunal verdict falls against Rangers, could be implicated in the scandal which precipitated the crisis. While I am sure Campbell Ogilvie will be shown to have acted with impeccable ethical standards, the SFA must quickly establish a structure clear of contagion.

Germany’s unemployment rate at record low in December
——
Impact of this?
Inflation will start to rise and then interest rates will follow upwards accordingly (very fast). Simple rule: any good news out of Germany or France is bad news for the rest of the EU, especially if you have a large (variable) mortgage.
My dear,dear,dear,friend.. Awe Naw.
Correctomundo.. Pal..
Unless, you are a Bank!
The Banking System must be Protected at all Costs!!
And cannot be allowed to fail.
Fur ye see…
A Functioning Banking System is a Very Necessary and Important Adjunct
tae a Healthy Economy.
If ,The Banking System..
IN A MODERN SOCIETY…
Is Broken.. and or , in Disrepair…
Then..
Chaos wull stalk the Land…
and
Barbarism and Grief to the General Populace… wull Prevail..
(See Greece…)
and then…
It wull Really be..
Every Man Fur Himsel.
Noo ye know Why..
In A Modern society…
The Banking System must be Protected from any kind of Break-Down
That is An Imperative.

A gem Paul, a real gem.
Understated, restrained and eloquent, yet dripping with menace and satire.
SFA could become a mnemonic for Scotland Fooled Again.
The Conway Cup was a huge success on so many levels. More details from the man himself later this week. He’s recovering!!

Have to admit to feeling a tad uncomfortable at some of the comments that have been made on here today,,,at this moment in time i receive Incapacity Benefit,,for various medical reasons,im not going into specifics, its no one’s business!!!
Some of the comment’s have got me down a bit,,some of them verging on nasty,,speaking of people claiming Benefits as if they are some sort of lower life form,,,i.e. Vermin!!
I will continue to come on here and post,,but CQN will never be the same for me,thanks to some Poster’s,,which is sad!!

“……and then…

Every Man Fur Himsel…..”
Kojo, isn’t that what you want and have always advocated?
Well, I’m glad to see my blog has stirred up such an interesting debate!
Tesco, one of the UK’s biggest employers, has changed its policy on this issue in recent days. And the main reason for that is pressure being applied through social media and directly at stores. The company now recognises that work experience schemes should be voluntary rather than compulsory. The company now accepts that it is wrong to expect people to work for nothing.
Workfare simply doesn’t work. Who says so? The DWP, which is the same government department that is running this workfare scheme! How’s that for cognitive dissonance?
“There is little evidence that workfare increases the likelihood of finding work. It can even reduce employment chances by limiting the time available for job search and by failing to provide the skills and experience valued by employers” (Source: DWP Research Report)
There is one basic problem with any scheme that aims to get unemployed people back into work, and yes that’s where the vast majority of them would rather be. The problem: lack of jobs.
we’ve become addicted to good news and lack of further good news today is making people narky.
Here is the background to William Nimmo Smith who is heading up the investigation into RFC. Copied from wikipedia
Inquiries and Reports
In 1993, he was appointed along with James Friel, Senior Procurator Fiscal of North Strathclyde, to conduct an investigation into allegations of corruption amongst a so-called Magic Circle in the Scottish justice system, comprising homosexual members of the judiciary, legal profession and police. The allegations included liability to black-mail and giving preferential treatment, including unusually lenient sentences, to homosexual criminals. Concerns had been raised by Linlithgow MP Tam Dalyell with Lothian and Borders Chief Constable Sir William Sutherland. The Report on an Inquiry into an Allegation of a Conspiracy to Pervert the Course of Justice in Scotland was presented to the House of Lords on 26 January 1993 by Lord Advocate Lord Rodger of Earlsferry, and found no evidence of the existence of such a Magic Circle, but strongly criticised some police officers, who it said had treated rumours as fact or had been motivated by homophobia.[2][3][4][5]
In 1995 he was appointed by Michael Forsyth, the Secretary of State for Scotland, to conduct a local inquiry with the terms of reference: “To inquire into the question whether Monklands District Council have failed to comply with the duty imposed on them by section 7 of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 to make appointments to paid office or employment on merit, and to report thereon.” After conducting the inquiry, which included the taking of evidence at hearings open to the public, he reported on 15 December 1995 that there was no evidence that any such appointment had been made otherwise than on merit. The Secretary of State so advised the House of Commons on 20 December 1995

A Functioning Banking System is a very simplistic description of what was/is needed.
So if the Banks that lend also borrow and when they say NAW your no getting your wages, your life savings your pension ….nowt happens ????
“The Banking System must be Protected from any kind of Break-Down”
so why not nationalize them …. they are in all but name and responsibility anyway
Hail Hail
So. How much is it costing for the services of Lord Nimmo Smith (isn’t he Spock?) ?
It must be a pretty Penny (Arcade) and I’m sure the last I heard the SFA were pretty skint themselves. If Spock does uncover some wrongdoing there will surely be a hefty fine involved.
Not that the fine will every get paid of course…
450k vacancies (not all full-time) vs 2.6M unemployed. 450k forced into jobs. The other 2.15M, your benefits are getting cut. That seems fair. Right?

Agree or disagree with some of these posts, days like this are why I keep coming back here.
The level of debate might not always be high-minded and rooted in intellect, but it beats every other forum hands down, especially those belonging to The Enemy, which are fixed on such weighty issues such as “how many Catholics are employed at Ibrox” and “did Celtic NewCo when they moved out of the graveyard?”
Here, there is passion, articulate argument, reason and logic (for the most part).
That is what makes it a very special place even if, as ibleedgreenandwhite says, I thought for a while I had accidently logged onto the Daily Mail comments section under an article called “How Benefit Recipients Like To Kill Their Children.”

…..no, not the same talking heads here on CQN, especially today ;))
And it’s “Dushanbe” not “Dunshanbe”, by the way.
On a topic unrelated to anything on the last few pages, I was reading an interesting article in a wildlife magazine which gave me a great idea.
The WWF have been searching the far east attampting to close down Bear farms. These “farms” are used to collect bile from captive bears, which is sold in China as a “medicine”
It struck me that there are a large number of Bears in this neck of the woods with more bile than they know what to do with. Enough infact, topay the big tax bill…….. Do you think we should tell them?
James Forrest,
I think I’ll go onto Follow Follow and start a debate about Jehovah’s Witnesses. That should be fun.

As a fellow OA I must entirely distance myself from the antedeluvian views of Philvus on here. The Jesuit community have a historic affinity towrds the poor and the oppressed . Any attempt at further punishment of the sick and unemployed will find no echo from The Society of Jesus. As for Kojo no-one should giveshis cretinous ramblings even a scintilla of credibility.

Haha. Start out by telling them the rugby fan from Edinburgh who might, possibly, maybe, be interested in buying them if if if, is one of them! Get them started looking for the links between the Jehovah’s and Rome … wind them right up haha.
Whyte admits he used Ticketus money to buy the club and then says he will gift his shares to the fans. Erm that will be the shares you bought with their money?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

He actually ends it with this:
‘But I am a Rangers fan, and, like other Rangers fans I don’t do walking way’
He is a Tim at the wind up, not even Declan would be that brazen
I’ve read SO many articles re. Rankers triibulations and I reckon 80% of them come down to ” Rankers must be saved”…”cultural institution”…”good of the nation”…etc.,., etc.,. ad nauseam.
Should they wriggle & squeak their way out of this ” wee problem ” they will feel they are untouchable and act with more impunity than ever before. In short they will become exponentially unbearable….please excuse the obvious pun…
But,it is troubling to me that they may scuttle out of this with the bare minimum….there I go again.
Ice cubes on head again; it’s been that kind of day…

It looks like many people on here want to encourage people to stay unemployed.
I and a few others want to encourage them to go look for a job to support themselves and their families. Now I accept that being laid off can happen to anybody, I’ve been there myself, however I went looking for work, many people who I meet in the course of my job consider work as something to avoid as they are very happy to take every benefit they can to keep them going. They will never ever look for a job unless made to do so.
BTW
I’m not against benefits for people. I believe that the Pension should be at least doubled, the sick (and i mean those who are really ill, not at suffering from being heart lazy) should be properly looked after and the Unemployment benefit should be more than it is, but you shouldn’t get it for doing nothing after a certain amount of time of unemployment.
Just a thought but if Rangers go into liquidation this week and are no more.
What is the status of the Big Tax Case appeal?
It will be in relation to an entity that is no longer. So cannot appeal the findings in court and that makes the Tax Appeal findings part of an incomplete legal process.
Could Ogilvie not reasonably argue that his flawed status as a beneficiary of EBTs would have been reversed by the High Court if it had been tested but as Rangers are no more it is academic?
