Untenable position for SFA president as drama unfolds

917

Campbell Ogilvie’s appointment as president of the SFA was always controversial.  As general secretary and director of Rangers, Ogilvie was the club’s chief administrator during the final 11-year period they refused to employ Catholic footballers.  In many other walks of life, this background would make him an embarrassing relic of a former era, but in Scottish football it was enough to see him promoted to the ultimate honour position.

He remained in position at Rangers long after the new regime of Sir David Murray arrived and set aside the decades-old sectarian employment policy but left the club in 2005, joining Hearts as operations director two months later.  All of this puts the SFA president in central position regarding the on-going tax tribunal, which is charged with deciding if Rangers illegally evaded tax from a period starting in 2000 and going on well beyond Ogilvie’s departure.

If the First Tier Tribunal finds against Rangers the SFA must ask for Ogilvie’s immediate resignation.  The association cannot have a president embroiled in a tax evasion scam which, even before a verdict has been decided, has already caused untold harm to his former club and the reputation Scottish football.  The scale of the damage to public finances has yet to be definitively established but it will not make good reading.

The SFA has just embarked on its first proper investigation into whether directors of a football club, in this instance Rangers, are fit and proper persons to hold such a position.  Office holders at the association cannot exercise power over the game if they are not subject to the same standards they demand from clubs.  Pending this investigation, and the outcome of the tax tribunal, Ogilvie should temporarily step aside.  Scotland is not yet a banana republic, public bodies must have robust ethics and must not allow the shadow of contagion to be cast over the body charged with ensuring legal and moral standards are adhered to.

The SFA has some enormously important months ahead.  Its president is currently in a position to influence which course it takes and, if the tribunal verdict falls against Rangers, could be implicated in the scandal which precipitated the crisis.  While I am sure Campbell Ogilvie will be shown to have acted with impeccable ethical standards, the SFA must quickly establish a structure clear of contagion.

    That’s ignoring interest…

And let’s not ignore the fact that he’s admitted trying to come to an agreement for a issue we are told has yet to be decided.

  4. Looking to the future, the former Ibrox chairman said that – if he emerges from administration still in control of Rangers FC, he would give “immediate consideration” to gifting the majority of his shares to a supporters’ foundation.

So Murray the rugger bugger is behind it after all!

He told Walter over and over what he wanted when Hurlock, Steven, Rae, Butcher, Woods, Ferguson, Hateley and awe thems- “Give me a team to win the Premiership!”

He meant the Guiness Premiership but you cannot say “Guiness” in the Theatre of Hate. So Walter didnae get it.

So what with the Commonwealth Games 7s and now Brian Kennedy, Minty will get his Rugby after all!!!

not normally one to disagree with you but I do feel it appropriate to point out that NOT being a ‘fit and proper person’ might be a more appropriate qualification to be SFA President given the track record of the past 3 or 4 in this office……..

McGinn (party to Celtics troubles), McBeth (Clyde & racism with FIFA issues), Peat (Bankrupt Airdrionians & many more) and then Campbell (the administrator par excellence)……

On this basis the great administrator is well suited to the rule being wholly unfit and properly qualified to have anything to do with running a football club……

  11. Regarding Whyte’s deal with ticketus…..is that like someone pre-selling a farmer’s produce for the next four years, without the farmer knowing about it, in order to buy the farm?

If so, the man’s a genius!

  12. Surely the final revelation will be regarding security. Whyte says it is against his own companies. I am willing to bet the security Ticketus hold will be against the company formerly known as Wavetower whose sole assets are a majority shareholding in Rangers Football Club.

  13. How could he sell season tickets a whole month before he owned the club? Durely this should have warned Ticketus that he was a bit if a shyster?

  14. Having read Whyte’s and then the administrator’s statements I was beginning to almost feel sorry for their fans. Then I took a wee dip into Rangers Media Bears den and saw these cretins spout their bile. Disgusting and any pangs of sympathy immediately gone. They are also incredibly stupid – suppose it’s their lack of Kafflic education.

Looking forward to CP tomorrow night when we can all have a party.

    Rogueleader:

    Here’s what I suspect.

The Ticketus security, along with the contracts of certain high earning players, are owned by Rangers Group Ltd. This is his NewCo/Phoenix vehicle. I think he’s done the “double shuffle” here, and that Ticketus know more about his plans than anyone.

Ticketus put their initial £23 million in escrow … had Whyte been unable to get the club they would have got it back. If Rangers do not NewCo/Phoenix his last act will be to transfer the debt back to Rangers PLC. But that’s not the plan, of course … he fully intends this club to NewCo/Phoenix.

The only thing about his statement which I believe is the unspoken assertion that he is in this until the outcome he wants, and will fight all the way to get it.

That means it’ll get bloody. I can’t wait!

  18. The more I look at CW and the admin men, the more I see they indeed are in this up to their necks.

Statement from CW, statement for the Duff and Duffer, and repeat, the timing is spooky.Mmmmmm

  19. I’m with Neil Lennon on this. I want to win the league at Celtic Park. Going to Ibrox with a slender 23 point lead could backfire on us.

  20. Afternoon. And firstly an apology. I was one of those back in October who suggested that perhaps it was time for Celtic to consider other options than Neil Lennon. Oh bhoy was I wrong!!!!!!

So much has occured since then it’s difficult to know where to begin.

The rise of Celtic, whilst at the same time watching the implossion in Govan has been remarkable. Of course the press has been full of sound bites from a wide variety of sources. I notice that Keevins, Chick Young and Jangle Jangle seem to be noticeable by their absence – no great loss there then.

However, perhaps it is time to take stock of what has occured, and what the future might hold.

To begin with, Celtic can, and will survive without Rangers. Let’s not beat about the bush. If they collaps totally, and that’s what I can see, then the current Rangers support will drift off to support other clubs. Motherwell used the be known as Rangers Reserves at one time. The television revenue may well drop. Now this will definitely have an impact on clubs at the lower end of the SPL, but it won’t affect Celtic to anywhere near the same level. I have read that in some quarters the opinion is that Celtic will then simply buy players that are good enough to win the SPL, and nothing else. I don’t think so. Back in the 60’s and early 70’s, Celtic had very little real opposition. They didn’t cost cut then, and if they have guarenteed income from the Champions League (worth a lot more than the current Sky/ESPN deal), it would be foolish not to pursue that as a worthwhile goal.

Now, as to the dark side. They are in administration, but I’m sorry, I don’t see how they can be viewed as salvageable at all.

They owe some £49M to the HMRC. They owe £9M in VAT, and PAYE. The £24.4M paid for the next few years season tickets was used by By Whyte (or should that be White) to buy the club, and pay off Lloyds. The whereabouts of the remaining £6.4M remains to be seen. The £5.5M for Jelly Legs, is where? They sold off the franchise on the sale of their strips to JD Sports some years ago. Just where is the revenue stream for this company? Add to that the so called value of Ipox is nowhere near the £70M figure being quoted.

Ibrox, nor any part of it is a listed building, despite what is being claimed. The site has no value as a commercial site. If Glasgow council were to permit the building of another out of town business centre, they might have the big department stores in Glasgow centre kicking their doors in. If it was to be converted to housing, just where is the money to build homes, and who would buy them.

Then we have polititians sticking their noses in. If they were to let Rangers off the hook in any way, I hope they then have the courage to stand in front of teachers, policemen, firemen etc, and explain to them that since there is a shortfell in revenue, they these guys will not get any salary increases, or that there might also be job losses. Somehow I think they would duck out of that.

Rangers are apparently running at a cost that is some £10M a year more than their income – and that is before the next few years season tickets were sold off in what is looking like a very moody deal. Stories abound about people who are interested in buying the club. strange, Minty Moonbeams spent 4 years trying to sell them, and the only person he found was as dodgy as he was. Then they have some of the old board coming out with advice about how things should be done. The same guys that brought them to their knees in the first place.

Taking all this into account. they look to me like a completely lost cause, and administration seems to be just a stepping stone to oblivion. They had no sympathy for us in 1994. Oh how they forget the goading they did then. Well I haven’t, and the sooner they are sent packing into the history books the better.

    Hail Hail

  21. I don’t want to sound like i am blowing my own trumpet (but here goes) but i said ( told anybody willing or unwilling to listen) that there whytey character has used the ticketus deal as leverage for that takever thingymajob…knew it knew it all the time…i also thought it was a longfirm scan involving celtic supporting crime familes in the glasgow security “industry”. Whytey is a patsy kline for some nefarious characters…

  22. JF – I don’t think you are far away and he will not have tipped his plan to many bar a very few. What is the bets none of the inner circle knew anything about football administration and his little shuffle with the players (a normal wheeze in his line of work) will get the club relegated as all their SPL points will be removed for fielding ineligible players…

As has been said many many times…we are going to need a bigger bowl

The SFA are to blame, they have allowed minty carte blanche to do what he wanted.

RC Ogilvie should stand down immediatly.

Scottish football has been destroyed all because we won the Big Cup, and in their persuit of emulatiny us the game here is in the mess it’s in now.

Disbandment of the SFA should be our goal.

This would be the best solution all round.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As two weeks in the Carribbean sun set in a green flash, it is interesting to return to the chaos of a blue flush as the infamous Glasgow Rangers go down their own toilet.

Good to see the SFA caught in the vortex and we will never have a bettert chance of clearing out the Stygian Stables at Mount Florida.

Before I left for the sun n rum I set out some thoughts on how the game in Scotland could start to reform itself at

    In Whom Do We Trust

suggesting trust building steps that require a degree of transparency that if met would give even the worst cynics in our ranks pause to think.

In the absence of any terms of reference it is difficult to know just what the SFA enquiry announced today will come up with, but unless it is transparent, it will be another lost opportunity to clean up our game.

Supporters trust and associations of all clubs should be making their views heard.
