Victor’s £1m a light amid utter insanity

1847

You want some good news? Around £1m of Tottenham’s money for Victor Wanyama will find its way to Celtic, which will offset some of the economic impact of this morning’s news. This aside, there is only bad news. If we want to buy footballers priced in euros (or anything other than GPB) they will cost more money. We will also have to pay higher wages to be competitive with European clubs.

Goods will cost more – it will start today with fuel and travel, then food, electrical goods and everything else. Wages will buy less (not just less-able footballers). Borrowing repayments will be higher. Business expenditure, wages and employment will drop, so will the tax take – and money available for welfare spend.  The poor always pay the highest penalty.

If you are rich enough and without a mortgage you can indulge in flag waving all day, happy in a delusion that self-determination even remotely exists in modern economies. Or that more self-determination over here, and a little less over there, is a panacea. It’s not, it’s just another economic crisis coming your way soon.

The entire political class have failed us. Calling a flag waving referendum was a grubby attempt to hold onto power by the prime minister; this mess is his making. Whoever succeeds him will have to successfully pander to the same party membership in order to get elected.

Jeremy Corbyn’s mealie-mouthed campaigning was an embarrassment. His “7 out of 10” backing for remain did what it was supposed to do: convince people he was going through the motions for something he didn’t believe in.

Who’s ever heard of a leader winning support for an issue he is prepared to back 7 out of 10 himself? He should go, but political ego will ensure he’ll hang around to make sure Johnson wins the next general election.

It took six days for the Greek government to abandon their own disastrous EU referendum mandate. Instead of attempting a rescue, all our political ‘leaders’ will give us is more populist power grabs. It’s already underway.

It’s just banter, he was asked a question on what daft arse was saying and he made a funny, no big deal, SB as we all know does his talking on the park and is smart enough to keep his juicy retorts for the playing field, it’s sport, gets punters interested, I love it :)

  2. Ernie – re the Ashcroft polls

It’s actually also in line with surveys done prior to Indyref that showed that social attitudes in Scotland were very similar to those down South, despite perceptions of the opposite. Where this doesn’t bear out is during elections where we (the nation) vote for parties that don’t necessarily fit our social attitudes.

Donegal International Airport have plans to build another runway, to accommodate extra traffic.

However, there is a long way to go between the people expressing their will and enactment of that mandate.

Since when did the will of the people matter?

I must have missed that memo.

If the global financial and industrial institutions don’t want it, it won’t happen.

We have a unique way of responding to Ref results.

If the Government don’t like it….have another one.

Unfortunately, in the UK the Government does like it, but once the ramifications become apparent, all Ibrox will break loose.

Absolutely. It’s coming from Sevco’s side to try to get the “old firm” guff back (which only they need). No need for Scott to get involved.

Yes I do think enough will vote against, I expect there will be analysis of where the vote was close and those representing those areas will take the chance, it will be enough to delay, there is as some have mentioned and I hope, a chance for renegotiation, and the pressure is on the EU not the UK, the UK is a highly valued partner and makes a considerable contribution so I don’t think they’ll be in any big hurry to lose us.

  9. Are those of us with dual nationality in a win / win scenario. Moi – Eire passport and can get a Brit one as i was born in Norn Iron. I understand that Eire have tightened up the rules on eligibility for citizenship. Anyone confirm that having a grandparent who once visited Donegal during a 2 week holiday to Ireland is no longer deemed eligible for Irish citizenship (unless of course you can play football)?

  10. The EU will have to take a very hardline stance with the UK. Anything else will spell the end of the EU itself.

A genuine Brexit PM will be in place by October, probably Boris, The EU will not allow this to drag on, Britain will be out and any Trade Deal will be onerous to try & prevent others from following the same path.

Just imagine if the UK got a sweetheart deal what the reaction would be in Denmark etc. These Countries would be next in line.

All our Economies are going to suffer for the next decade and as usual in these situations those at the bottom of the ladder will feel it most.

The other worrying aspect is the rise of genuine right wing English Nationalism, this is now a reality and a Scotland attached to the UK and isolated from most of Europe will feel the brunt of this.

I genuinely believe there will be a second Indy vote in Scotland, Whether it passes second time or not is hard to say.

Anyhow there is nothing I can do about all of this so I’m not going to worry about it, but I will remain a curious and interested observer.

Johnson has no track record of euro secpticism*, quite the opposite. . He does however have ample form for duplicity and dishonesty. For him this has been all about getting to be leader of the Tory party.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the one who brokers a new deal and holds the second referendum.

The great European revolt is only just getting started

    Janet Daley 24 June 2016 • 7:04am

What a political education that turned out to be. The leadership of every major party will now have to re-connect with the reality of public opinion overnight. So furious, and so confident in their own self-belief did the voters prove to be that no amount of bullying, or threats or moral blackmail would sway them. In fact, it was almost certainly the threats and the coercion that sealed their determination to resist.

How many of the party leaders will survive this humiliation? David Cameron might seem to be in the most obviously invidious position. How can he now lead the negotiated exit which he so passionately argued against? Only by throwing George Osborne – who committed the most egregious offence with his threatened Punishment Budget– under the bus and offering major posts to Boris and Michael Gove.

He might conceivably get away with making Osborne Foreign Secretary and replacing him with Gove as Chancellor. But it will be hard for him to present himself as a credible national leader after this repudiation of his judgement.

The most immediate danger though must be to Jeremy Corbyn. The Parliamentary Labour Party will blame him for failing to back the party’s official position with any convincing force, and the Left-wing activists will be appalled at his lack of connection with the grassroots.

But the most startling revelation of the night was the national character. I have said it before about my adopted country but I must say it again:

THE BRITISH ARE THE SANEST, BRAVEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD.

    I am stunned with admiration.

Somehow London will have to learn to stop sneering and come to terms with the fact that it lives in a fantasy world whose assumptions are alien to most of the country. This is not the capital vs the provinces: it is an incestuous, self-referring circle of urban chatterers vs the reality of life for most people.

This is just the beginning, of course, of the great European revolt. Which country will be first to demand its own referendum? Italy, the Netherlands or even France? This is the beginning of the end for a failed project.

Our decision will seem like small beer by this time next year, when Br\o/\o/nie lifts the ‘Big Cup’ !

Yes, I’mean old enough to have travelled in Europe before the freedom of movement.

A little while back, I travelled to Cyprus, we landed just after a Russian Flight, the Russians were queuing up at an empty desk, some Immigration folk came to them and started searching bags… we were waved through the portal marked EU Citizens… it was in fact easier than flying from England to Scotland. But not for the Russians.

I have also waited in long queues to get into the States… don’t want to go back to that in Europe… no I like my EU Citizenship and will be doing my upmost to keep it.

This time last year the House of Commons voted 544-53 in favour of the European Union Referendum Bill, which was given Royal Assent in December 2015. There is no chance that the same House will not initiate Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon and inform the European Council to that effect.

  17. I have been listening to various radio progs on 5 live and radio 4 today. When asked about the SNP wanting a 2nd indy ref the main response from various British right wing establishment types is that there definitely will be no 2nd Scots indy ref. The main gist being that the indy question was put to the Scots electorate and they rejected the proposal with a comfortable majority saying no. The EU exit vote was not conducted on a regional level it was a democratic plebiscite of the entire UK and the majority of the UK voted to leave – so basically tough titties Scotland and Norn Iron. Good luck to wee Nicola trying to broach the subject of a 2nd indy ref with the Furher of the newly Independent UK.

  18. Ernie,

I think you highlighted the problem yourself in an earlier post, the only room for negotiation would be an overhaul of the entire mechanism of the EU. Any specific UK deal would trigger a chain reaction throughout Europe.

I genuinely expect an extremely tough line from the Germans & French.

No idea but they could try and follow the Irish EU model and keep holding referendums until a favourable result for the government is achieved. Of course once that ‘favourable’ result is achieved the then losing side have no recourse to another plebiscite. Democracy it isn’t.
